Chapter 3: The Name Behind the Mask
The name on my screen stared back at me.
*Mauricio Ortega.*
For several seconds, I convinced myself there had to be an explanation.
A mistake.
A technical problem.
Anything except the truth my mind was already trying to accept.
Because the phone number that had called me belonged to the same man who had stood in our bedroom less than twenty-four hours earlier and told me I was the problem.
The same man who had raised his hand against me.
The same man who had watched his mother humiliate me and called it a family matter.
I pressed the call button.
It rang once.
Twice.
Then went straight to voicemail.
I didn’t leave a message.
I just stared at the screen.
If Mauricio had sent that message himself, then he wanted me afraid.
But why?
He already knew I was leaving.
He already knew I was angry.
What did he think I would do?
The answer came before I wanted it to.
He thought I was still the same woman who would forgive him.
The woman who would cry, apologize, and come back.
He had no idea who he had actually married.
I placed the phone on the table and opened my laptop.
For years, I had built Horizonte Capital by learning one lesson:
Never make decisions based on emotion.
So I did what I always did when the world became uncertain.
I collected information.
I pulled up every document Camila had sent.
Every transaction.
Every message.
Every connection.
And slowly, a pattern appeared.
Mauricio wasn’t just hiding money.
He was hiding relationships.
There were meetings.
Private dinners.
Business conversations that never appeared on official records.
People connected to the Ortega family.
And one name appeared more than once.
*Alejandro Vargas.*
I recognized it immediately.
A businessman.
A competitor.
A man who had tried to purchase a controlling interest in Horizonte Capital two years ago.
A man I had rejected.
My stomach tightened.
Why was Mauricio connected to him?
My phone rang.
This time, it was Camila.
“I assume you saw the message.””
I looked at the screen.
“Yes.””
“Did he call you?””
“Yes.””
A pause.
“Valeria, listen carefully. Do not meet him alone.””
“I wasn’t planning to.””
“Good.””
“Camila.””
“Yes?””
“How much did Mauricio know about me?””
She was quiet.
Too quiet.
“Camila.””
“I’m still investigating.””
“That wasn’t my question.””
Another pause.
Then she said:
“More than he should have.””
The words landed harder than I expected.
I closed my eyes.
“How much more?””
“I found emails.””
“What kind of emails?””
“Emails between an unknown account and someone using Mauricio’s private address.””
I stood.
“About me?””
“Yes.””
My throat tightened.
“What did they say?””
“I don’t have the complete chain yet.””
“But?””
“But the earliest email was sent three months before your first date.””
The room went silent.
Three months.
Before he met me.
Before he knew me.
Before he supposedly fell in love with me.
I remembered that night.
A small restaurant.
Rain against the windows.
Mauricio laughing when I spilled water on the table.
He had looked at me like I was the only person in the room.
I had believed him.
“Valeria,” Camila said gently, “there is something else.””
I hated those words.
They always meant my life was about to change again.
“What?””
“The first email wasn’t asking about your company.””
“What was it asking about?””
Camila lowered her voice.
“Your personal life.””
My fingers went cold.
“What?””
“He wanted to know where you lived. Who your friends were. Your habits.””
I looked around my hotel room.
Suddenly, the walls felt different.
Less like shelter.
More like a place where I was hiding.
“Why would he do that?””
Camila didn’t answer.
Because neither of us wanted to say the obvious.
Maybe Mauricio hadn’t discovered my money after falling in love with me.
Maybe he discovered me before.
The next morning, I went back to the Ortega house.
Not because I wanted to return.
Because I wanted answers.
I arrived at 10 a.m.
The house looked exactly the same.
The flowers from the wedding were still outside.
The decorations were still hanging.
Neighbors passing by probably thought it was the home of a happy newlywed couple.
They had no idea what happened behind those walls.
When I knocked, the door opened almost immediately.
Beatriz stood there.
She wasn’t surprised.
That bothered me.
“Valeria.””
Her voice was calm.
Too calm.
“I was wondering when you would come back.””
I looked at her.
“I’m not here to come back.””
Her smile disappeared slightly.
“Then why are you here?””
“I need to speak with Mauricio.””
She stepped aside.
“He’s upstairs.””
I walked in.
The same hallway.
The same expensive paintings.
The same house that had felt like my future only days ago.
Now it felt like evidence.
As I passed the living room, I noticed something on the table.
A photograph.
A family photo.
Beatriz.
Esteban.
Rafael.
Mauricio.
And another woman.
A young woman I didn’t recognize.
I stopped.
“Who is she?””
Beatriz looked at the photo.
Her expression changed.
“Someone who made mistakes.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Her name?””
“Why do you care?””
“Because I’m starting to realize everyone in this family has secrets.””
Beatriz’s face hardened.
“You should be careful, Valeria.””
“Is that a threat?””
“No.””
She smiled faintly.
“It’s advice.””
Before I could respond, footsteps came from upstairs.
Mauricio appeared.
He looked different.
Not angry.
Not confident.
Tired.
His eyes immediately went to me.
“Valeria.””
I didn’t answer.
Beatriz left the room.
Of course she did.
She knew exactly when to disappear.
Mauricio walked closer.
“I’m glad you came.””
“I’m not.””
He looked hurt.
The performance was almost convincing.
“I know I messed up.””
“Messed up?””
His eyes dropped.
“Valeria…”
“No. Say it.””
He looked at me.
“I hurt you.””
“Yes.””
“I shouldn’t have done that.””
“No.””
His face tightened.
“You’re not going to forgive me?””
I almost laughed.
“Is that what you think this is?””
“What?””
“That you hurt me and now I decide whether you feel better?””
He looked away.
For the first time, I saw something.
Fear.
Not regret.
Fear.
“You found something.””
I froze.
“What?””
“You know something.””
I studied him.
“How do you know?””
He didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
“You were watching me.””
“Valeria…”
“You were investigating me before we met.””
His expression changed.
Just slightly.
But I saw it.
The truth.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
Silence.
“Explain why your phone number was used to threaten me.””
His face went pale.
“What?””
“Don’t pretend.””
“I didn’t send anything.””
“Then who did?””
He looked toward the hallway.
And for the first time, Mauricio Ortega looked afraid of someone else.
“Valeria, you need to leave.””
My eyes narrowed.
“You’re warning me?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He stepped closer.
“Because you don’t know what my family is capable of.””
I stared at him.
“You’re part of that family.””
His jaw tightened.
“You think I wanted this?””
The question surprised me.
“What does that mean?””
He looked away.
“Nothing.””
“No. You said something.””
He rubbed his face.
“You should have never married me.””
The words were quiet.
But they cut deeper than the slap.
“Did you know who I was?””
He didn’t answer.
“Did you?””
Finally, he whispered:
“Yes.””
Everything inside me went still.
The man I loved had known.
“How long?””
He closed his eyes.
“Before our first date.””
I felt like the floor moved beneath me.
“Why?””
Before he could answer, a voice came from behind us.
“Because you were never supposed to be his wife.””
I turned.
Beatriz stood at the entrance.
And beside her was a man I had never seen before.
He was older.
Expensively dressed.
Confident.
The kind of confidence that came from believing consequences were for other people.
Mauricio’s face changed.
“Father…”
The man smiled.
“Finally, she knows.””
I looked at Mauricio.
Then at the man.
“Who are you?””
The man stepped forward.
“Esteban Ortega.””
Mauricio’s father.
The head of the family.
The man whose underwear had been in that blue bucket.
He looked at me like he was studying a business deal.
Not a person.
May you like
Then he said something that made my blood run cold.
“Valeria Cruz, you really thought we married you for love?””
