Chapter 6: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine

The attorney’s voice echoed through the phone.

“The authorization request was signed by someone claiming to be your husband.””

I looked at Mark.

He looked back at me.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Because there was only one thought moving through both of our minds.

Someone had used his name.

And somehow, they had gotten close enough to my trust account to try.

“Mr. Whitmore did not submit that request,” the attorney continued.

I turned away from Mark.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes, Claire.””

His voice became more serious.

“I personally reviewed the submission. The signature was attached with supporting documents.””

“What supporting documents?””

“Your marriage certificate.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

My marriage certificate.

The one thing that connected Mark to me legally.

The one thing Serena had spent months trying to destroy.

“How long ago was this submitted?””

“Five days ago.””

Five days.

The same day Mark moved out.

The same day he sent me the divorce message.

The same day he told me he had chosen his future.

My chest tightened.

Because someone had been moving pieces while I was drowning.

“Did the request go through?””

“No.””

I closed my eyes.

Relief came for half a second.

Then disappeared.

“Why not?””

“Because your father added additional security measures after his death.””

I almost smiled.

My father.

The one person who always believed preparation mattered.

He used to tell me:

“Trust is valuable, Claire. But verification keeps you alive.””

At the time, I thought he was talking about business.

Now I wondered if he somehow knew the people closest to me would become the biggest risk.

“Thank you for telling me,” I said.

“Claire.””

“Yes?””

“There’s something else.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What?””

“We received another request.””

“When?””

“This morning.””

I looked at Mark.

“What request?””

The attorney hesitated.

“A request to transfer control of your trust.””

The room went silent.

“Control to who?””

His answer was quiet.

“An organization called Bennett Strategic Holdings.””

The same name.

The fake company.

The one created eight years ago.

My hand slowly lowered.

“Thank you.””

I ended the call.

Nobody moved.

Then Mark spoke.

“I didn’t do it.””

I looked at him.

“I know.””

The words surprised him.

“You believe me?””

“No.””

His face fell slightly.

“I believe someone is using you.””

That was different.

And he knew it.

Grace immediately began making calls.

Thomas started reviewing every document.

Mark sat at my kitchen table, staring at the floor.

He looked like a stranger.

But strangely, he also looked like someone I had known forever.

A person caught between the man he was and the man he was finally becoming.

I hated that I noticed.

I hated that after everything, some part of me still remembered the good moments.

The problem with betrayal was that it didn’t erase the past.

It poisoned it.

Every happy memory became a question.

Every promise became evidence.

Every “I love you” became something you had to examine.

“Claire.””

I looked up.

Mark was watching me.

“What?””

“I need to tell you something.””

I almost laughed.

“Another secret?””

His eyes dropped.

“Yes.””

I waited.

Because apparently my marriage had become a place where secrets came to die.

“I knew Serena was interested in your inheritance.””

My body went still.

“What?””

Grace looked up.

Thomas stopped typing.

Mark swallowed.

“Not from the beginning.””

“When?””

He looked ashamed.

“After she found out about your father.””

I stared at him.

“How?””

“She overheard a conversation.””

“With who?””

“With me.””

The room became colder.

“You told her.””

“I didn’t tell her everything.””

“You told her enough.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

I stood.

“You told another woman about my private financial information?””

“Claire—”

“No.””

My voice shook.

Not from anger.

From disappointment.

That hurt more.

“You protected your business secrets better than you protected me.””

He had no response.

Because there wasn’t one.

“I was angry,” he whispered.

“At me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His eyes met mine.

“Because you were leaving.””

I stared.

The honesty surprised me.

But it didn’t excuse anything.

“You cheated because I was leaving?””

“No.””

He looked down.

“I cheated because I was weak.””

That was the first real answer he had given me in months.

Not an excuse.

Not a justification.

A confession.

And somehow, that made it worse.

Three hours later, Thomas discovered the first major break.

He found the original filing for Bennett Strategic Holdings.

And the name attached to the registration.

Not mine.

Not Mark’s.

Daniel Cross.

But there was something else.

A witness signature.

Serena Vale.

Grace leaned back.

“She helped create the company.””

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.””

I stared at the screen.

“So eight years ago, Serena and Daniel created a company using my identity.””

“Looks like it.””

“Why wait?””

Thomas looked at me.

“That’s the question.””

Then Mark spoke.

“Because of me.””

Everyone turned.

He looked at the documents.

“When Serena came into my company, she wasn’t trying to replace Claire.””

I said nothing.

“She was trying to get close enough to finish what she started.””

The words hurt.

Because they sounded true.

Grace looked at him.

“Did you know about any of this before today?””

“No.””

“Why should we believe you?””

Mark accepted the question.

“I don’t expect you to.””

That surprised everyone.

He continued.

“But I know Serena.””

I almost interrupted.

But he kept talking.

“She studied people. She found weaknesses. She knew exactly what someone wanted to hear.””

His voice lowered.

“She made me feel like I was finally appreciated.””

I looked away.

Because I knew that feeling.

Not from Serena.

From Mark.

The way he made me feel invisible until I became useful again.

“She told me Claire was holding me back.””

The room became quiet.

“And I believed her.””

Mark looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

The apology sat between us.

Heavy.

Real.

But not enough.

Some damage could be repaired.

Some couldn’t.

That night, I went through my father’s old belongings.

I hadn’t opened the final box since his funeral.

I always told myself I wasn’t ready.

Maybe the truth was I was afraid.

Inside were old photographs.

Letters.

A watch.

And a small black notebook.

I recognized it immediately.

My father’s handwriting covered the pages.

Business notes.

Personal thoughts.

Things he never told anyone.

I opened it.

The first few pages were ordinary.

Then I saw my name.

*Claire.*

I froze.

The entry was dated one month before he died.

My daughter trusts too easily. She believes love makes people loyal. I hope life never forces her to learn otherwise.

My throat tightened.

I turned the page.

I have concerns about people surrounding her. Especially Mark.

I stopped.

Mark.

My fingers trembled.

The next line was underlined.

He is a good man when life is easy. The danger is what he becomes when he feels powerless.

I sat down.

My father had noticed.

Years before I did.

I kept reading.

I created additional protections around Claire’s inheritance. If someone tries to access it through marriage, the trust will reveal their identity.

My heart raced.

The trust would reveal their identity?

What did that mean?

I turned the page.

But the rest was missing.

Someone had ripped it out.

A page.

The most important page.

Gone.

Then I noticed something else.

A small envelope hidden inside the notebook.

My name was written on it.

Not my married name.

My real name.

*Claire Bennett.*

I opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

A photograph of my father.

Standing beside Daniel Cross.

And Serena.

Years before I ever met her.

On the back of the photo, my father had written six words.

Six words that made my entire body freeze.

*They were watching you from the beginning.*

I dropped the photograph.

Because suddenly, the affair was not the mystery.

The baby was not the mystery.

The divorce was not the mystery.

May you like

The mystery was why my father had known Serena and Daniel were coming for me…

And why he never warned me.
