Chapter 6: The Sister I Never Knew

The word stayed on the page.

*Sister.*

Not cousin.

Not half-sibling.

Not some distant relative I had never heard about.

My sister.

I stared at the sentence until the letters blurred together.

Then I looked at Ryan.

He looked as shocked as I felt.

“You knew?””

His face changed immediately.

“No.””

I held up the letter.

“Don’t lie to me.””

“I’m not.””

“Then why did Dad write this?””

“I don’t know, Emily.””

“You found this two weeks ago.””

“Yes.””

“And you never read the whole thing?””

“I started reading it.””

“Started?””

His jaw tightened.

“I got to the part about Thomas and Mom and I stopped.””

“Why?””

He looked away.

“Because I was scared.””

That answer made me angry.

Not because it was wrong.

Because it was honest.

“You were scared?””

“Yes.””

I laughed quietly.

“My entire life was changing, and you were scared?””

Ryan’s expression fell.

“Emily—”

“No.””

I stood up.

“Everyone keeps saying they were protecting me. Mom. Dad. You.””

I held up the letter.

“But nobody ever asked me what I wanted to know.””

The room was silent.

Thomas stepped closer.

“Emily.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

His voice was gentle.

I looked back at the letter.

My hands were still shaking.

But I sat down.

Because I needed answers more than I needed comfort.

I continued.

Your mother did not only hide your father from you.

She hid your sister.

The next paragraph began underneath.

Her name was Lily.

I stopped.

Lily.

A name that felt familiar.

Not because I knew it.

Because I had heard it before.

Somewhere.

Somehow.

I searched my memories.

Nothing.

Lily was born forty-three minutes before you.

My breathing stopped.

Forty-three minutes.

When the doctors placed you both in Diane’s arms, she made a decision no mother should ever have to make.

I frowned.

Both?

You both?

I kept reading.

*There were complications during delivery. Diane was weak. Confused.

Afraid. She was told one child would need immediate medical care.*

My fingers tightened.

Lily was taken to another hospital for treatment.

Another hospital.

My heart started racing.

By the time Diane recovered, she had convinced herself that losing one child was easier than losing both.

I looked up.

“No.””

The word escaped before I could stop it.

Thomas looked at me.

“What?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I read faster.

She told everyone Lily did not survive.

The room became completely still.

My father’s handwriting continued.

But Lily survived.

I covered my mouth.

My sister was alive.

A person.

Somewhere.

Living a life I knew nothing about.

Diane believed she was protecting you from pain. She believed raising you as an only child would give you a normal life.

I laughed through my tears.

A broken sound.

“Normal?””

Nobody answered.

Because there was nothing normal about this.

I disagreed.

I smiled sadly.

Of course he did.

Dad always disagreed with things quietly.

He wasn’t a man who fought with anger.

He fought by standing firm.

I wanted to find Lily. I wanted you both to know each other. But Diane made me promise not to tell you.

My eyes moved to the next line.

I promised because she threatened to leave and take you away completely.

I froze.

That was the kind of sentence that explained everything and nothing.

My mother had spent years telling me she sacrificed everything for me.

But what had she sacrificed?

And what had she taken?

Emily, if you are reading this, I need you to understand one thing.

I held my breath.

You had a sister who loved you before she ever met you.

I closed my eyes.

That sentence hurt more than anything.

Because somewhere in the world was a woman who had spent her entire life without knowing she had a sister.

Without knowing me.

Without knowing Dad.

Without knowing anything.

The letter continued.

I found Lily.

My eyes widened.

I looked at Thomas.

He looked just as surprised.

I found her when she was seventeen.

Seventeen.

I wanted to tell you. I wanted to bring her home. But Diane was terrified.

The next line was underlined.

She was not afraid of Lily.

My heart pounded.

She was afraid of what Lily would reveal.

I looked at Ryan.

“What does that mean?””

He shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

Thomas spoke quietly.

“Diane always had a reason.””

I turned toward him.

“What reason?””

He looked at the letter.

“I don’t know.””

For the first time since meeting him, he looked completely lost.

I kept reading.

Lily knows she has a twin sister.

My hands froze.

She knew.

She knows your name.

A cold feeling moved through me.

She knew me.

Not personally.

But she knew I existed.

I left information for you because I knew someday you would search for the truth.

Then the final lines appeared.

If you find Lily before Diane tells you everything, be careful.

My stomach dropped.

Because Lily does not know the reason she was separated from you.

I stared at the page.

The warning felt heavier than the secret.

Why would my sister not know?

Why would Dad tell me to be careful?

I turned the page.

There was nothing.

That was it.

A lifetime of secrets.

A lifetime of silence.

A lifetime reduced to several pages.

I looked at Ryan.

“Where is she?””

His eyes widened.

“I don’t know.””

“Dad found her.””

“Yes.””

“Then there must be something.””

He shook his head.

“I searched.””

“When?””

“After I found the letter.””

I stared at him.

“You searched for my sister before you told me?””

He looked ashamed.

“I didn’t know how to tell you.””

“You didn’t know how?””

My voice rose.

“Ryan, there is a woman out there who spent her whole life without us.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

I pointed at the letter.

“You got to grow up with Dad. You got memories with him. You got a childhood with me.””

His face fell.

“She didn’t.””

Nobody spoke.

Because that was the truth.

Lily didn’t just lose a family.

She lost the chance to know she had one.

My phone suddenly rang.

I looked down.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

Thomas looked at the screen.

“Answer it.””

I hesitated.

“Why?””

“Because whoever it is knows you found the letter.””

My blood went cold.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice spoke.

Young.

Shaking.

“Is this Emily Whitmore?””

I stood completely still.

“Yes.””

A pause.

Then:

“My name is Lily.””

I couldn’t speak.

The room disappeared.

All I could hear was my own heartbeat.

“Lily?””

“Yes.””

Her voice cracked.

“I’ve been waiting thirty-four years to hear your voice.””

Tears filled my eyes.

My sister.

My twin.

A stranger who shared my first breath.

“How did you get my number?””

Silence.

Then she whispered:

“Because your mother gave it to me.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“She called me last night.””

I gripped the phone tighter.

“Why?””

Lily took a shaky breath.

“Because she told me you finally found out.””

I looked at Thomas.

Then Ryan.

Nobody moved.

“What did she tell you?””

Lily was quiet for a moment.

Then she said:

“She told me it was time for me to know the truth too.””

My chest tightened.

“What truth?””

Her voice dropped.

“The truth about why she gave me away.””

I waited.

And then she said the words that made my entire body go cold.

“Emily…”

Her voice trembled.

“Your mother didn’t lose me.””

A pause.

“She chose you.””

I couldn’t breathe.

Because suddenly the question wasn’t why my mother hid my sister.

May you like

The question was why she had chosen one daughter over another.

And what had made her decide that I was the one worth keeping.
