Chapter 3: The Secret Beneath the Pearls

The first thing the guests noticed was the sound.

A low mechanical hum rose behind the towering floral wall that framed the altar.

Then the enormous arrangement of white roses and orchids began separating down the middle.

A narrow seam appeared.

The two halves moved apart.

Behind them stood a massive screen.

Brittany turned toward it.

"What is that?""

Victoria took one step backward.

I watched her face.

The screen illuminated.

A security camera image appeared, showing the corridor outside my private bridal wardrobe.

The timestamp was clear.

The footage showed Brittany entering the corridor.

She looked over her shoulder before slipping into the dressing suite.

A few seconds later, she emerged carrying my ivory garment bag.

The ballroom erupted.

"Oh, my God.""

"She really took it.""

"Is that the bride's sister?""

Brittany stared at the screen.

Her face drained of color.

"Turn that off!""

Nobody moved.

The footage continued.

Brittany struggled with the garment bag for a moment before dragging it farther down the corridor.

Then another figure entered the frame.

Victoria.

The woman who had just announced that I had embarrassed myself.

The woman who had told the guests to forget me.

The woman who had slapped an attendant's hand away because the girl had attempted to retrieve the orchids Brittany deliberately dropped.

Victoria walked straight toward my private suite.

She glanced down the corridor.

Then she entered the room.

Seconds later, she emerged beside Brittany.

Together, they carried away the garment bag.

For several moments, the ballroom was completely silent.

Then the whispers began.

Nathan didn't move.

He stared at the screen as if he were trying to force the image to become something else.

"Mom?""

Victoria lifted her chin.

"That footage is being taken out of context.""

He turned toward her.

"What context could possibly explain that?""

She opened her mouth.

Closed it.

Then looked at me.

"You planned this.""

I blinked.

"Excuse me?""

"You wanted to humiliate me.""

I almost laughed.

"You entered my dressing room and removed my wedding gown.""

"I was helping Brittany.""

"By taking my property without permission?""

Victoria's expression hardened.

"She wanted to wear something beautiful.""

"Then she should have bought herself a dress.""

Brittany stepped forward.

"Madison, you don't understand!""

"Then explain it.""

She looked around the ballroom.

Hundreds of guests were watching her.

Some held their phones up.

Others whispered behind their hands.

Her perfect entrance had become a public disaster, and for once, there was no easy way to make me look responsible.

"I thought you wouldn't mind," she said.

"You thought I wouldn't mind you stealing a million-dollar gown?""

"I didn't know it was worth that much!""

"That doesn't make it yours.""

Victoria suddenly moved between us.

"Enough. This has gone far enough.""

Nathan looked at her with an expression I had never seen before.

"Did you help Brittany steal the dress?""

Victoria's lips pressed together.

"I was trying to prevent a family embarrassment.""

"By creating one?""

"You have no idea how difficult this has been for me.""

Nathan stared at her.

"You're right. I don't.""

His voice was quiet, but the words landed harder than shouting.

For years, Victoria had expected him to smooth over every disagreement, excuse every insult, and accept every decision she made on his behalf.

She had assumed that marrying me would not change that arrangement.

She was beginning to realize she had been wrong.

I could have demanded an immediate apology.

I could have ordered Brittany to remove my gown in front of everyone.

I could have asked the estate's security team to escort both women from the ballroom.

But something about the way Victoria kept staring at the ivory pearls made me pause.

She wasn't merely embarrassed.

She was terrified.

And when Brittany looked at her, I saw the same fear reflected in her eyes.

They were both waiting for me to do something.

Not to expose the theft.

Not to cancel the wedding.

Something else.

I turned toward Brittany.

"Do you know why I designed that gown?""

She swallowed.

"Because it's beautiful.""

"That's part of it.""

I walked closer.

The champagne-gold train whispered across the marble floor.

"The gown you stole was the first piece I ever created after receiving the commission that changed my career. Every pearl was selected by hand. Every crystal was placed according to a pattern I spent months refining.""

Brittany glanced down at the bodice.

"So?""

"So the gown is more than a dress.""

Victoria's voice cut through the silence.

"Madison, don't.""

I looked at her.

"Why not?""

"Because you have made your point.""

"Have I?""

She stepped toward me.

Her expression was desperate now, her carefully maintained composure beginning to fracture.

"Whatever you think you know, you need to leave it alone.""

Nathan turned sharply.

"Why are you so afraid of her looking at the dress?""

Victoria said nothing.

I slowly circled Brittany.

The cathedral train stretched behind her in an enormous sweep of ivory silk.

From a distance, it looked flawless.

Up close, I could see the delicate stitching along the lower edge, the thousands of tiny pearls sewn into the embroidery, and the subtle pattern that connected the decorative panels.

I had spent weeks perfecting that pattern.

I knew every inch of it.

And I knew exactly where to look.

Brittany's hands began trembling.

"Madison, stop.""

I crouched beside the train.

She immediately stepped backward.

"Don't touch it!""

I looked up at her.

"Why?""

"Because you'll ruin it!""

"Interesting.""

I gently lifted the edge of the embroidered silk.

Beneath the pearls, nearly invisible unless someone knew where to look, sat a tiny crystal clasp.

It was no larger than the tip of my little finger.

To an ordinary guest, it would have looked like another decorative detail.

To me, it was the most important part of the entire gown.

I had designed it myself.

And only three people knew what it concealed.

One was me.

Another was the master craftsperson who had helped me complete the final construction.

The third was someone who had no legitimate reason to know anything about it.

Victoria.

Her face turned white.

Brittany stared at the clasp.

"What is that?""

I reached toward it.

Victoria shoved through the stunned guests.

"MADISON! DON'T TOUCH THAT!""

Her scream echoed through the ballroom.

The orchestra members froze.

Nathan spun toward his mother.

"Why?""

Victoria stopped several feet away from me.

Her chest rose and fell rapidly.

Nathan took a step toward her.

"What's underneath that clasp?""

She didn't answer.

Brittany looked from her mother to me.

"Victoria?""

The older woman ignored her.

Her eyes remained fixed on my fingertips.

I placed one finger against the tiny crystal.

Then I pressed.

A faint click echoed through the silent ballroom.

Brittany gasped.

Victoria lunged forward.

And just before her hand reached mine, I saw Nathan notice something hidden beneath the first layer of embroidered silk.

His expression changed.

"Madison," he whispered.

"What is that?""

I lifted the edge of the fabric a fraction higher.

Beneath the delicate pearls lay something that had never been intended for the eyes of an ordinary wedding guest.

Something Victoria had clearly believed she could keep hidden forever.

May you like

And as her hand closed around my wrist, I realized that stealing my wedding dress had never been the real plan.

The dress was only the beginning.
