Chapter 6

The first article appeared before noon.
STERLING RIDGE WEDDING RAIDED BY STATE AUTHORITIES.
By two, it had changed.
FRAUD INVESTIGATION ROCKS PROMINENT VINEYARD FAMILY.
By four, they had my name.
But not the way the Sterlings wanted.
Sources close to the investigation confirmed that forensic auditor Audrey Vale Sterling was transported from the estate after a medical emergency. Authorities are investigating whether emergency care was delayed.
Diana showed me the headline carefully, like it might explode.
I read it twice.
“Who leaked that?”
“Not us.”
“Eleanor?”
“Maybe someone at the wedding. Maybe the photographer. There were hundreds of phones.”
Of course there were.
The Sterlings spent their lives staging appearances.
Now the audience would not leave.
Seraphina posted first.
My wedding was violently disrupted by people with a personal agenda. Please respect our privacy.
It stayed up twelve minutes.
Then someone uploaded video.
Not the bathroom.
The ballroom.
The footage showed me clutching Julian’s sleeve.
Eleanor grabbing my arm.
Julian following.
Me looking back at him.
Guests watched in stunned silence as the three of us disappeared into the service corridor.
Then, later, agents entering.
Eleanor shouting.
Me being wheeled out.
Julian standing frozen.
The internet did what the internet does.
It judged quickly.
This time, correctly.
By evening, Seraphina deleted her post.
Too late.
Grace stayed stable that night.
I sat beside her incubator until my stitches ached and Paula forced me back to my room.
At 9 p.m., Julian’s attorney called my hospital room.
I did not know how he got the number.
I answered because I wanted to know what kind of threat would come first.
“Mrs. Sterling, my name is Grant Mercer. I represent Julian Sterling.”
“My name is Audrey Vale.”
A pause.
“Ms. Vale. Julian would like to discuss a temporary arrangement regarding the child.”
The child.
Not Grace.
Not our daughter.
The child.
“What arrangement?”
“He believes it would be best for the infant to remain under Sterling family medical coverage and legal protection.”
I almost laughed.
“She is in intensive care because of Sterling family protection.”
“Ms. Vale, emotions are understandably high.”
“My daughter has a name.”
“Of course.”
“What is it?”
Silence.
I hung up.
Then I called Denise Rowan, the family attorney Diana had recommended.
She answered even though it was late.
“I was expecting your call.”
“You know?”
“Everyone in Atlanta legal circles knows. What do you need?”
“I need Julian away from my daughter.”
“Has he threatened custody?”
“His lawyer just called her ‘the child.’”
Denise sighed.
“That answers that.”
By morning, Denise had filed for emergency protective custody.
By afternoon, Julian filed his own petition.
His claim was simple.
I was emotionally unstable after childbirth.
My work had caused stress that endangered the pregnancy.
The raid was connected to me.
He argued Grace should be protected by “the stable Sterling family network” while I recovered.
I read the petition in my hospital bed with Grace’s hospital bracelet around my wrist.
My hands did not shake.
Not this time.
Diana stood beside me.
“He’s using the ledger.”
“Yes,” I said.
“He’s trying to turn the frame job into a custody argument.”
“Yes.”
“What do you want to do?”
I looked toward the NICU hallway.
“I want him to regret choosing paperwork over his child.”
Diana smiled faintly.
“That’s my auditor.”
The emergency custody hearing was set for the next morning in a hospital conference room.
I wore the only clean clothes Paula could find for me.
A gray cardigan.
Black maternity leggings.
Hospital socks.
Julian arrived in a navy suit.
Perfectly shaved.
Perfectly wounded.
Eleanor did not attend.
She had been formally arrested that morning.
When Julian saw me, his expression softened for the judge.
A performance.
He placed a hand over his heart.
“Audrey, I just want what’s best for Grace.”
I looked at Denise.
She smiled.
Because he had finally said her name.
May you like
On record.
Now he could not pretend he didn’t know it.
