Chapter 2: The Will That Changed Everything

For three seconds, nobody moved.

The cold wind blew across the driveway, carrying the faint smell of rain from the darkening sky, but the silence around me felt heavier than the air itself.

Vivian stared at my phone.

Then she laughed.

A short, nervous laugh.

“Nice little performance, Hannah.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She stepped onto the porch, her heels clicking against the stone.

“You think calling Thomas Harrison changes anything?””

Ashley crossed her arms.

“Mom, she’s bluffing.””

Vivian nodded.

“Exactly.””

But I noticed something.

Her confidence was different now.

A few minutes earlier, she had looked untouchable.

Now she kept glancing at my phone.

Waiting.

Worrying.

I lifted the phone and pressed the speaker button.

“Mr. Harrison, you’re on speaker.””

The sound of papers moving came through the line.

Then his calm voice filled the driveway.

“Good evening, Vivian.””

The color drained from her face.

Because he knew exactly who was there.

“Thomas,” she said carefully.

“Vivian,” he replied.

“I was informed that there may be a dispute regarding Daniel’s estate.””

My father’s name.

Hearing it from someone else almost made me lose my balance.

Daniel.

My dad.

The man who was supposed to walk me down the aisle someday.

The man who was supposed to meet my children.

The man who wasn’t supposed to leave me standing outside my childhood home fighting for the right to exist.

Vivian forced a laugh.

“There’s no dispute. Hannah is emotional. She doesn’t understand how these things work.””

Mr. Harrison’s voice remained steady.

“Actually, Vivian, I believe Hannah understands more than you think.””

Ashley looked at her mother.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered.

I watched Vivian’s expression carefully.

For the first time all evening, she looked uncertain.

Mr. Harrison continued.

“Before I say anything further, I need to confirm something. Hannah, are you still in possession of your father’s personal effects?””

I frowned.

“My father’s things?””

“Yes. Anything he specifically gave you before his passing. Letters.

Documents. Personal items.””

I looked toward the house.

Toward my bedroom window upstairs.

“I have some things in my room.””

Vivian immediately stepped forward.

“No, you don’t.””

Everyone looked at her.

Her reaction came too quickly.

Too strongly.

Mr. Harrison noticed.

“Vivian, did you remove Hannah’s belongings from the residence?””

She hesitated.

“I was simply helping her pack.””

“Helping?””

His tone sharpened slightly.

“By throwing her possessions onto the driveway?””

Vivian’s jaw tightened.

“She was leaving voluntarily.””

I almost laughed.

Voluntarily?

After she dragged my suitcase downstairs?

After she shoved me outside?

I opened my mouth, but Mr. Harrison spoke first.

“Hannah, I need you to listen carefully.””

I held the phone closer.

“Okay.””

“Your father changed his estate plan approximately eight months ago.””

Vivian went completely still.

Eight months.

That was around the time my father started acting differently.

Not sick.

Not afraid.

Just… thoughtful.

He started organizing documents.

Making lists.

Having long conversations with people I didn’t know.

I remembered asking him about it one night.

“Dad, are you okay?””

He smiled and squeezed my shoulder.

“I’m just making sure the people I love are protected.””

At the time, I thought he meant because of his health.

I never imagined he knew something I didn’t.

Mr. Harrison continued.

“Your father requested that the final version of his will remain confidential until after his passing. He was very specific about that.””

Vivian’s voice became sharp.

“Thomas, I think you’re forgetting that I’m his wife.””

“No, Vivian,” he replied.

“I’m very aware of your legal relationship to Daniel.””

The way he said it made the driveway feel colder.

Ashley stepped beside her mother.

“Are you saying my mom doesn’t inherit anything?””

Mr. Harrison paused.

“I’m saying the estate must be handled according to Daniel’s final wishes.””

Vivian’s face hardened.

“This is ridiculous.””

“No,” Mr. Harrison said.

“What is ridiculous is that you attempted to remove Hannah from the property before the will reading.””

My heart stopped.

“How did you know that?””

Mr. Harrison didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“Because your father anticipated that possibility.””

The silence that followed was different.

Not confusion.

Fear.

I looked at Vivian.

She looked away.

And that told me more than words ever could.

My father knew.

Somehow, my father knew this might happen.

“Mr. Harrison,” I said softly, “what did my father leave?””

I heard him take a breath.

“I cannot reveal every detail over the phone. But I can tell you this.””

A pause.

“Daniel did not leave everything to Vivian.””

Ashley’s eyes widened.

Vivian’s mouth opened.

“That’s impossible.””

Mr. Harrison ignored her.

“Daniel specifically stated that Hannah was to remain in the family home until the estate was fully settled.””

I felt my knees weaken.

The family home.

He called it that.

Not the property.

Not the residence.

The family home.

My father’s words.

Vivian shook her head.

“No.””

It was barely a whisper.

“No, he wouldn’t.””

Mr. Harrison continued.

“There are also instructions regarding ownership of the house.””

I swallowed.

“What instructions?””

“Those will be discussed tomorrow morning during the official reading.””

Vivian stepped forward.

“Thomas, this is absurd. Daniel would never do this to me.””

The lawyer’s voice turned colder.

“Vivian, Daniel was my client for fifteen years. He was very clear.””

She looked at the phone.

“Clear about what?””

A long pause.

Then:

“About protecting his daughter.””

The words hit me harder than I expected.

My eyes burned.

Because my father was gone.

But somehow, even now, he was still standing between me and the people trying to hurt me.

Vivian grabbed the porch railing.

“That’s not possible.””

Ashley looked confused.

“Mom?””

Vivian ignored her.

“Daniel promised me this house.””

Mr. Harrison replied calmly.

“Daniel made many promises during his marriage. The legally binding ones are the ones documented in his estate plan.””

Vivian’s face turned red.

“This conversation is over.””

“No,” Mr. Harrison said.

His voice stopped her.

“This conversation is just beginning.””

Nobody spoke.

Then he continued.

“Hannah, I need you to do something for me.””

“What?””

“Do not leave the property tonight.””

I looked at Vivian.

She immediately shook her head.

“She cannot stay here.””

Mr. Harrison continued as if she hadn’t spoken.

“If anyone attempts to force you off the property, call the police and reference Daniel’s estate instructions.””

My heart pounded.

“Are you saying I have the right to stay?””

“Yes.””

One word.

But it changed everything.

Vivian stepped backward.

“This is insane.””

Ashley looked between us.

“So what? She just gets to live here?””

Mr. Harrison answered.

“For now, yes.””

Ashley’s face twisted.

“But my mother owns this house.””

“No,” he said.

The certainty in his voice made everyone freeze.

“Your mother believes she owns this house.””

Vivian’s expression turned furious.

“Thomas.””

“I’ll see you tomorrow morning at nine for the reading.””

He paused.

“And Vivian?””

“What?””

“Bring every key you have.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“Why?””

“Because Daniel requested that all copies of the house keys be returned before the estate transfer begins.””

Vivian gripped the brass keys in her hand.

Almost protectively.

“No.””

Mr. Harrison didn’t respond.

He didn’t need to.

The call ended.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Vivian slowly looked at me.

The woman who had thrown me onto the driveway.

The woman who had told me I was nothing.

Now she looked at me differently.

Like she was seeing me for the first time.

“You knew.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“You knew about this.””

I shook my head.

“I didn’t.””

“Liar.””

Her voice cracked.

“You and your father planned this.””

I stared at her.

“My father died today.””

The words came out quietly.

“And you’re standing here accusing me of plotting against you?””

Ashley stepped between us.

“Mom, calm down.””

But Vivian wasn’t listening.

She pointed at me.

“Your father always chose you.””

There it was.

The truth hiding beneath all the cruelty.

Not anger.

Not confusion.

Jealousy.

“He gave you everything,” she whispered.

I looked at her.

“No.””

My voice was steadier now.

“He gave me love.””

Vivian flinched.

“And maybe that’s what you hated most.””

For a second, I thought she might cry.

But instead, her face hardened again.

“You think this is over?””

I didn’t answer.

She walked back into the house.

Ashley followed, but before she closed the door, she looked at me.

The smug smile was gone.

“Hannah.””

I looked up.

“What?””

She hesitated.

For the first time in years, Ashley looked afraid.

“Whatever my dad wrote…”

She swallowed.

“Mom doesn’t want you to see it.””

The door closed.

I stood alone on the driveway.

My broken suitcase beside me.

My father’s house in front of me.

And a thousand questions running through my mind.

Why had my father changed his will?

What had Vivian done that made him feel the need to protect me?

And what exactly was waiting for us inside those legal documents tomorrow morning?

I looked up at the second-floor window of my old bedroom.

The lights were still on.

Someone was inside.

Someone who had just spent the last hour trying to erase me from my own home.

Then my phone buzzed.

I looked down.

It was a message from Mr. Harrison.

One sentence.

May you like

One sentence that made my blood run cold.

*Hannah, before tomorrow’s reading, there is something your father wanted you to know about Vivian.*
