Chapter 8

The truth about Mark came from the backyard camera.

Dad did not want me in the room when he watched.

Aunt Laura took me upstairs.

But I heard enough.

The muffled video.

Dad’s chair scraping back.

Aunt Laura saying, “Robert, sit down.”

Then silence.

The kind of silence that means something has died.

Later, Dad told me only what I needed to know.

“Brenda lied to both of us,” he said.

“About the baby?”

His eyes closed.

“Maybe.”

I did not ask more.

I was ten.

I had already learned too much.

Brenda’s lawyer tried to use her pregnancy in court.

He said jail was too stressful.

He said she needed family support.

He said I was an emotional child struggling with adjustment.

Then Officer Ramirez played the videos.

The pantry.

The closet.

The kennel.

Brenda’s lawyer stopped using the word emotional.

Dad requested a protective order.

Granted.

Temporary custody and supervised arrangements if the baby proved his.

Granted.

Brenda was ordered to stay away from me.

Granted.

But court did not make fear disappear.

At night, I still dreamed of the lock.

Click.

Click.

Click.

I woke crying.

Dad came every time.

Not annoyed.

Not tired.

Not angry.

Just there.

Aunt Laura told him, “This is the work now.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

He started therapy too.

So did I.

My therapist’s name was Dr. Lane.

She had kind eyes and a jar of peppermints on her desk.

She told me, “What happened to you was not discipline.”

I said nothing.

She said, “It was abuse.”

The word made me cry.

May you like

Not because I did not know.

Because someone else finally said it.
