Chapter 8: The Last Lie Rachel Tried To Tell

Rachel’s smile was the scariest thing I had seen all night.

Not because it was powerful.

Because it was familiar.

It was the same smile she wore when she knew something everyone else didn’t.

The same smile she had when she convinced me to sign papers I didn’t understand.

The same smile she had when she told me I was “lucky” to have her advice.

Rachel had lost control of the room.

But she hadn’t lost confidence.

And that worried me.

“You’re all making a mistake,” she said.

Her voice carried through the silent reception hall.

Nobody answered.

She looked around at the guests.

The people who had spent the evening praising her.

The people who had toasted her future.

The people who had just watched her secrets appear on a twenty-foot screen.

“You think you know what happened.””

She laughed softly.

“You don’t.””

Andrew stared at her.

“Rachel.””

She turned toward him.

“No, Andrew. You deserve to know the truth too.””

The way she said it made everyone uneasy.

Because it sounded like a threat.

Not an explanation.

She pointed toward Daniel.

“He’s manipulating Claire.””

Daniel didn’t react.

Rachel continued.

“He shows up after twelve years with a folder and expects everyone to believe him?””

She looked at the guests.

“Does anyone here actually know this man?””

No one spoke.

And for a second, I understood her strategy.

Rachel didn’t need people to believe her.

She only needed them to doubt.

That was how she had always survived.

Not by proving she was right.

By making everyone question whether anyone else could be right.

She turned toward me.

“Claire, think about this.””

I said nothing.

“You’re emotional.””

The old insult.

The one she always used.

“You’ve been through a lot.””

I almost smiled.

Because even now, she couldn’t stop.

Even with the truth in front of her.

Even with evidence.

She still saw me as the fragile one.

“The divorce.””

She continued.

“Being a single mother.””

Her eyes moved toward Chloe.

“Your daughter.””

My body went rigid.

“Don’t.””

Rachel ignored me.

“You’re vulnerable. You want this to be true because it gives you a reason.””

“A reason for what?””

“To hate me.””

The room went quiet.

I stared at her.

And suddenly I saw exactly what she was doing.

She was trying to make herself the victim.

Again.

“You’re saying I want this?””

My voice was calm.

“You’re saying I want to believe my own sister betrayed me?””

Rachel looked away.

“That’s not what I meant.””

“Yes, it is.””

For once, I didn’t lower my voice.

For once, I didn’t apologize for being hurt.

“I spent twelve years defending you.””

Rachel’s expression shifted.

“I told people you were misunderstood.””

My throat tightened.

“I told myself you loved me.””

The room listened.

Even the people who had come here to celebrate her.

“I blamed myself every time you made me feel small.””

Rachel looked uncomfortable.

“And now you want me to believe I created all of this because I’m angry?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I looked directly at her.

“I believe it because you did it.””

The silence afterward was different.

Not uncomfortable.

Not uncertain.

It was the silence of people finally hearing something that should have been said years ago.

Rachel looked at Chloe.

And something in her face changed.

She knew she couldn’t win against me.

So she tried another target.

“You have no idea what you’ve done.””

Chloe stepped closer to me.

I immediately placed a hand on her shoulder.

Rachel noticed.

“She’s the reason everything is falling apart.””

My blood went cold.

Several guests gasped.

Andrew looked horrified.

“Rachel.””

But she kept going.

“She found things she didn’t understand.””

“She’s a child,” I said.

“Exactly.””

Rachel’s voice sharpened.

“She was manipulated.””

Chloe looked confused.

“I wasn’t.””

Rachel stared at her.

“Yes, you were.””

“No.””

My daughter’s voice was quiet.

But steady.

“You were the one who lied.””

The entire room froze.

Rachel blinked.

“What did you say?””

Chloe looked at the floor.

Then at me.

Then back at Rachel.

“I saw the videos.””

Rachel’s face changed.

“You don’t understand them.””

“I understand enough.””

She looked so small standing there.

But her words were stronger than anyone expected.

“You said Mommy was nothing.””

Rachel’s expression cracked.

“You said she didn’t deserve good things.””

The room became completely silent.

“And you said…”

Chloe stopped.

Her eyes filled.

I knelt beside her.

“You don’t have to.””

But she shook her head.

She wanted to finish.

“You said you hoped I would grow up and realize Mommy was the reason my life was hard.””

A painful silence followed.

Rachel looked away.

Because there was nothing to defend.

Not anymore.

Andrew took a step back from her.

“I need to ask you something.””

Rachel looked at him.

“What?””

“Did you know about Chloe’s inheritance?””

The question hit.

She froze.

That was the answer.

Andrew closed his eyes.

“You knew.””

“I was protecting us.””

“Us?””

His voice cracked.

“You mean you.””

Rachel looked angry.

“You don’t understand how complicated this is.””

“No.””

Andrew shook his head.

“I understand perfectly.””

For the first time, Rachel looked hurt.

Not because she regretted what she did.

Because she was losing someone’s admiration.

Daniel stepped forward.

“There’s one more piece of evidence.””

Rachel immediately turned.

“No.””

Daniel reached into the folder.

A recording device.

Small.

Black.

He placed it on the table.

“This was recovered from your office.””

Rachel stared.

“When?””

“Three weeks ago.””

My heart stopped.

Three weeks ago.

The same time she started planning the wedding.

The same time she invited me.

The same time she began preparing to destroy me.

Daniel pressed a button.

Rachel’s own voice filled the room.

“I need Claire to sign one more document.””

The guests listened.

My face went cold.

A man’s voice responded.

“What if she refuses?””

Rachel laughed.

“She won’t.””

“Why?””

“Because she still wants my approval.””

I closed my eyes.

Even now.

Even after everything.

That sentence hurt.

Because it was true.

A part of me had spent my entire life waiting for Rachel to finally say:

I’m proud of you.

The recording continued.

“And if she doesn’t sign?””

Rachel answered:

“Then I’ll make sure everyone sees exactly what she is.””

The audio stopped.

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel pulled out another document.

“This is the document she wanted Claire to sign tonight.””

He handed it to me.

I looked at the title.

My stomach turned.

*VOLUNTARY RELEASE OF ALL CLAIMS.*

My name was already printed at the bottom.

Waiting for my signature.

Rachel had planned to humiliate me.

Then pressure me.

Then make me sign away everything.

Tonight wasn’t a wedding.

It was a trap.

I looked at her.

“How could you?””

For the first time, Rachel didn’t have a clever response.

She just stared.

And then something unexpected happened.

My mother stood.

Everyone looked at her.

She slowly walked toward us.

“Rachel.””

Her voice shook.

Rachel looked annoyed.

“Mom, don’t.””

“No.””

My mother stopped.

“I spent years telling Claire to forgive you.””

A tear rolled down her face.

“I told her she misunderstood you.””

Rachel looked away.

“But I was wrong.””

The words seemed to surprise everyone.

Especially Rachel.

“I protected the wrong daughter.””

A sharp breath moved through the room.

Rachel’s face hardened.

“You’re choosing her?””

My mother looked at me.

Then at Chloe.

Then back at Rachel.

“I’m choosing the truth.””

And that was the moment Rachel finally lost.

Not the money.

Not the reputation.

Not the wedding.

The thing she had always believed belonged to her.

Control.

But before anyone could say another word, Daniel’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

Then his expression changed.

“What?””

I watched his face carefully.

“Are you sure?””

A pause.

Then he looked directly at me.

“Claire…”

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

He swallowed.

“The court documents were just filed.””

“About what?””

He looked toward Rachel.

“Someone has officially challenged Chloe’s inheritance.””

Rachel smiled again.

A small, cold smile.

Because even after everything…

She still had one final secret.

May you like

And this time, it wasn’t about the past.

It was about the future.
