Chapter 9: The Woman Behind the Perfect Wedding
Nobody moved.
The photograph sat on the table between us.
A simple printed image.
A woman walking through the venue hallway.
A woman carrying an envelope.
A woman who had spent the entire morning smiling at me, fixing my veil, calming my nerves, and telling me everything would be perfect.
My wedding planner.
Amelia Hart.
The person I had trusted to protect the most important day of my life.
The person who had access to everything.
The guest list.
The schedule.
The private rooms.
The security information.
My personal documents.
My family’s secrets.
My stomach twisted.
“No.””
The word came out quietly.
Not because I didn’t believe it.
Because I didn’t want to.
Amelia had been kind to me.
When I panicked about flowers, she stayed late.
When I worried about the weather, she checked every forecast.
When I cried about missing my grandmother, she held my hand and told me weddings carried the memories of everyone we loved.
How could someone like that be involved?
Daniel looked at the picture.
“Are we sure?””
Michael nodded.
“The camera footage is clear.””
“When was this taken?””
“Seven thirty-four this morning.””
Before the ceremony.
Before the dress was ruined.
Before everything exploded.
Lena stepped forward.
“But why would Amelia do this?””
Nobody answered.
Because the question was bigger than the wedding.
It was about motive.
Money.
Power.
A secret.
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked uncomfortable.
“You knew?””
She hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
My heart sank.
“You knew Amelia was involved.””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“I suspected.””
“SUSPECTED?””
My voice echoed through the hall.
“You suspected the person planning my wedding was involved in a scheme against me, and you said nothing?””
Vanessa flinched.
“I was trying to figure out the truth.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You were trying to control it.””
Her eyes filled.
And for once, she didn’t argue.
Because she knew.
She had spent her entire life trying to control damage.
The difference was that now the damage belonged to all of us.
Michael cleared his throat.
“There’s more.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course there was.
Every answer created another question.
“What else?””
He opened another folder.
“We checked the venue access logs.””
He placed a document on the table.
“Amelia entered the building at 6:12 a.m.””
I frowned.
“That’s normal. She was my planner.””
“Yes.””
He pointed to another line.
“But she didn’t go to the wedding preparation area.””
My stomach tightened.
“Where did she go?””
Michael looked at me.
“The private office.””
My father’s expression changed.
“What private office?””
“The office where the original inheritance documents were temporarily stored.””
Silence.
I stared.
“The inheritance documents were here?””
Michael nodded.
“Your grandfather’s lawyer requested they be delivered to the venue because there was supposed to be a legal signing after the ceremony.””
My heart raced.
A signing.
Today.
At my wedding.
Someone had planned this.
Not Vanessa.
Not just Vanessa.
This was bigger.
Daniel took the document.
“Why wasn’t Claire told?””
Nobody answered.
I looked at my parents.
My mother looked ashamed.
“We thought it was just paperwork.””
I laughed.
“Everything is always just paperwork until someone gets hurt.””
Nobody disagreed.
Lily stepped closer.
“My mother wrote about Amelia.””
I turned.
“What?””
She reached into her bag.
Another letter.
Another piece of Rachel’s life.
I almost didn’t want to open it.
Every document seemed to contain another wound.
But I took it.
Because I was done being the last person to know.
I unfolded the paper.
Rachel’s handwriting appeared.
*Claire,*
*There is someone close to your family who knows more than they admit.*
My breathing slowed.
*She presents herself as someone who helps people. She organizes. She fixes problems. She makes everyone trust her.*
My hand trembled.
Lily whispered:
“My mother never wrote names.””
“Why?””
“She was afraid.””
I looked back at the letter.
The next line was underlined.
*The most dangerous people are not always the ones who attack you. Sometimes they are the ones who convince you they are protecting you.*
I looked at Amelia’s picture.
My heart sank.
Daniel read over my shoulder.
“She knew.””
The words felt impossible.
Rachel had known.
She had seen it coming.
She had tried to warn me.
But why?
Why wait until now?
Why not tell me herself?
Then I remembered.
She tried.
Someone stopped her.
Someone made sure I never received the message.
Michael suddenly looked toward the entrance.
“Speaking of Amelia…”
Everyone turned.
The doors opened.
And there she was.
Standing exactly where she had stood that morning.
Perfect hair.
Perfect makeup.
Perfect smile.
Except now the smile looked different.
Smaller.
Forced.
“What’s happening?””
Nobody answered.
Amelia looked around.
Then her eyes landed on the documents.
And she froze.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
The same way I saw Vanessa react.
Recognition.
Fear.
She knew.
I stepped forward.
“Amelia.””
She looked at me.
“Claire, I can explain.””
The words immediately made my stomach drop.
Because innocent people usually ask what happened.
They don’t immediately explain.
“You can?””
She swallowed.
“Yes.””
“Then explain.””
She looked around.
At my family.
At Daniel.
At Vanessa.
Then she lowered her voice.
“Not here.””
I almost smiled.
Again.
The same request.
The same attempt to move the conversation somewhere private.
“No.””
My voice was calm.
“You wanted everyone here.””
Amelia frowned.
“What?””
“You wanted this wedding full of witnesses.””
Her expression changed.
“I don’t know what you think—”
“I think you knew about my grandfather’s estate.””
Silence.
Her face went pale.
That was all I needed.
Daniel looked at her.
“Did you?””
Amelia looked away.
“Daniel…”
“Answer her.””
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The room reacted.
A collective gasp.
I felt strangely calm.
Almost numb.
“How long?””
“Two years.””
Two years.
She had been near me for two years.
Planning.
Watching.
Waiting.
“Why?””
She looked at me.
And what she said surprised me.
“Because your grandfather asked me to.””
Everyone froze.
“My grandfather?””
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
Amelia shook her head.
“No. It isn’t.””
She stepped forward.
“He knew he was dying.””
Nobody spoke.
“He knew there were people around him who wanted control of the company.””
Her eyes moved toward my parents.
Then Vanessa.
Then Evelyn.
“He didn’t trust anyone.””
I felt a strange sadness.
Because for the first time, my grandfather’s actions made sense.
He had built walls because he expected betrayal.
But those walls had trapped me too.
“What did he ask you to do?””
Amelia looked at me.
“Watch.””
“Watch what?””
“You.””
The answer chilled me.
“Why?””
“Because he believed someone would try to manipulate your marriage.””
Daniel stiffened.
“And he was right.””
Amelia nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked at the estate papers.
“The transfer.””
She nodded.
“Someone planned to use the marriage clause.””
“Who?””
Amelia hesitated.
And that hesitation told me everything.
Because she wasn’t afraid of me.
She was afraid of the person behind it.
“Amelia.””
She looked at me.
“Tell me.””
Her voice dropped.
“It wasn’t Vanessa.””
My sister looked surprised.
Amelia continued.
“She was a distraction.””
Everyone went still.
My heart pounded.
A distraction.
The dress.
The humiliation.
The drama.
All of it.
Someone had let Vanessa believe she was the main player.
Someone had used her anger.
Her jealousy.
Her history with me.
“Then who?””
Amelia looked at one person.
One person who had spent the entire day crying.
One person who had apologized.
One person who had claimed she was protecting me.
My mother.
My breath stopped.
“No.””
Amelia’s face tightened.
“I’m sorry, Claire.””
My mother shook her head.
“No.””
But Amelia continued.
“Your mother didn’t create the plan.””
Everyone waited.
The sentence hung there.
Then Amelia finished.
“But she helped someone carry it out.””
My mother covered her mouth.
And Daniel whispered:
“Who?””
Amelia looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
That answer confused me.
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
She pulled out her phone.
“I only know one thing.””
She showed me a message.
A message sent from an unknown number.
The same day she signed my wedding contract.
The same day she received instructions.
I read the message.
And my blood ran cold.
*Make sure Claire marries Daniel.*
*Make sure the documents are signed.*
*Do not let Rachel’s daughter interfere.*
My eyes stopped.
Rachel’s daughter.
Lily.
Someone knew she was coming.
Someone knew the truth would be exposed.
Someone was still moving pieces.
I looked at Lily.
She looked terrified.
Then her phone rang.
The sound cut through the silence.
She looked at the screen.
Her face changed.
“Who is it?”” I asked.
She didn’t answer.
She slowly turned the phone around.
The name on the screen made everyone freeze.
May you like
Because the person calling Lily…
Was Rachel.
