Chapter 17

Years passed.
Dad recovered enough to travel.
Not far.
But enough.
We went to the Smoky Mountains because Mom had loved them.
She had died when we were teenagers.
Claire and I had grieved her differently.
Maybe that was where the split began.
Maybe not.
There is always a temptation to find the first crack.
Sometimes the house was built with too many hidden beams missing.
Dad stood at an overlook with his cane and said, “I wish your mother were here.”
“Me too.”
“She would have known what to do with Claire.”
I shook my head.
“Maybe. Maybe not.”
He looked at me.
“You’re kinder than I deserve.”
“No. Just tired of pretending one person can fix another.”
May you like
He smiled sadly.
“Fair.”
