Chapter 8: The Truth Standing Beside Me

The phone slipped slightly in my hand.

Not because I was weak.

Because my mind was trying to reject what I had just heard.

The ballroom remained frozen.

Hundreds of eyes watched me.

Everyone waiting for me to repeat the words.

Everyone waiting to discover who the real monster was.

I slowly raised my eyes.

The phone was still pressed against my ear.

"Who?""

My voice barely came out.

On the other end, my grandfather breathed heavily.

The sound was old.

Broken.

Like every breath carried years of regret.

"Caroline...""

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"Who is standing beside me?""

Nobody moved.

My mother looked terrified.

My father looked confused.

Juliette looked like she already knew the answer.

And Adrian...

Adrian was gone.

The space where he had been standing was empty.

A cold feeling moved through me.

I turned toward the ballroom entrance.

The doors were still swinging slightly.

He had run.

Detective Harper immediately noticed.

"Where did Adrian go?""

Two officers moved toward the exit.

My grandfather’s voice came through the phone again.

"Caroline, listen carefully.""

I looked around.

At my family.

At the people who had spent years hiding the truth.

"Tell me.""

A long pause.

Then:

"Your sister knows.""

My eyes moved to Juliette.

She froze.

"No.""

The word came from her mouth before she could stop it.

The ballroom erupted again.

Guests stepped away from her.

Phones lifted.

Whispers spread.

"Her sister?""

"She knew?""

Juliette shook her head.

"No, no, that's not what he meant.""

But her voice lacked conviction.

I stared at her.

The person I had protected my entire childhood.

The person I had searched for in my memories after the fire.

The person whose name was written in my mother’s warning.

"Juliette.""

She looked at me.

And I hated that a part of me still hoped she would deny it.

Not with anger.

Not with excuses.

But with the truth.

"Tell me he’s lying.""

Her lips trembled.

"I...""

That was all.

One word.

One hesitation.

And my heart broke.

Because I already had my answer.

My mother stepped forward.

"Caroline, wait.""

I turned toward her.

"No.""

My voice was calm.

Too calm.

"I have waited six years.""

My mother stopped.

"I waited in hospitals.""

My throat tightened.

"I waited for someone to tell me why my own family disappeared.""

I looked at Douglas.

"I waited for my father to come.""

Then Juliette.

"I waited for my sister.""

Then my eyes moved toward the open doors where Adrian had escaped.

"I waited for the man I loved.""

I swallowed.

"And all of you knew.""

Nobody spoke.

Detective Harper returned from the entrance.

"Adrian escaped through the service hallway.""

Of course he did.

He always knew where the exits were.

He had planned everything.

My grandfather’s voice interrupted.

"Caroline, you need to leave that building.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"Now.""

The urgency in his voice scared me.

"Why?""

Another pause.

Then:

"Because Adrian will not run alone.""

The ballroom doors suddenly slammed shut.

Everyone jumped.

The lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then darkness.

Someone screamed.

The emergency lights came on seconds later, casting the room in a dim red glow.

Detective Harper immediately moved.

"Everyone stay where you are.""

My heart raced.

Because I knew this feeling.

The same silence.

The same waiting.

The same terror before something happened.

The fire had started like this.

A quiet moment.

A moment where everyone thought they were safe.

Then everything changed.

A sound came from above.

A speaker.

Static.

Then a voice.

Adrian.

"Caroline.""

Every person in the ballroom looked upward.

His voice filled the room.

"I knew you would come looking for answers.""

My fists clenched.

"Where are you?""

No answer.

Only his voice.

"I wanted you to understand something.""

The screen above the stage turned on.

A video appeared.

Old security footage.

The Mercer estate.

The night of the fire.

Everyone watched.

The footage showed the house.

Then a car arriving.

A man stepping out.

Even from the distance, I knew who it was.

Adrian.

A wave of horror moved through the room.

But the video continued.

Another person arrived.

Juliette.

The guests gasped.

Juliette closed her eyes.

"No...""

The footage showed them entering the house.

Together.

I looked at her.

"You were there.""

Tears rolled down her face.

"I was afraid.""

The words came out quietly.

"You were there.""

She nodded.

The video continued.

The two of them argued.

No sound.

Only movement.

Then Adrian grabbed Juliette’s arm.

Hard.

Even through the blurry footage, I could see it.

He was not asking.

He was controlling.

Then something happened.

Juliette pulled away.

She ran.

And Adrian remained inside.

The screen went black.

Then Adrian’s voice returned.

"Everyone thinks Juliette betrayed Caroline.""

Juliette looked up.

Her face filled with fear.

"But the truth is more complicated.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Of course it is.""

His voice continued.

"Juliette was never the person who wanted Caroline dead.""

The room became silent.

I looked at my sister.

She looked devastated.

"Then who was?""

Static filled the speakers.

Then a new image appeared.

A photograph.

My mother.

Standing beside Richard Mercer.

And holding a document.

Adrian’s voice lowered.

"The person who started this was the person who had the most to lose.""

My mother went pale.

"No.""

I looked at her.

The room shifted.

Again.

Another secret.

Another betrayal.

My entire life had become a series of locked doors.

And every time one opened, there was another behind it.

Adrian spoke:

"Evelyn Mercer discovered Caroline’s true identity.""

My mother closed her eyes.

"She knew who Caroline’s biological family was.""

I looked at my mother.

"You knew?""

She didn’t answer.

"You knew?""

Her shoulders fell.

"Yes.""

The word was barely audible.

My heart felt like it cracked.

"Why didn’t you tell me?""

She cried silently.

"Because I was trying to protect you.""

I shook my head.

"Everyone says that.""

The words came out colder than I intended.

"Everyone who destroys my life says they were protecting me.""

The screen changed again.

A document appeared.

A birth record.

My name.

But not the surname Mercer.

I stared.

The name beneath my birth information was unfamiliar.

*Caroline Ashford.*

I stopped breathing.

Ashford.

The name meant nothing to me.

But it meant something to my mother.

Because she looked terrified.

Adrian’s voice continued.

"Caroline Ashford was the daughter of the man who nearly exposed the Mercer empire.""

Detective Harper looked at me.

"Your biological father?""

I nodded slowly.

But I didn’t know.

I didn’t know anything anymore.

My mother stepped forward.

"Caroline, please.""

I looked at her.

"Did you know my real family?""

She started crying.

"Yes.""

"Did you know who I was?""

"Yes.""

"Did you know why Richard wanted me gone?""

She looked away.

And that was the answer.

A noise came from the back of the ballroom.

Everyone turned.

The doors opened.

A figure stood there.

Older.

Weak.

But alive.

My grandfather.

Richard Mercer.

Two officers supported him as he entered.

The entire room froze.

He looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw the man behind the family name.

Not the businessman.

Not the legend.

Just an old man who knew he had run out of places to hide.

"Caroline.""

I stared at him.

"You lied to me.""

He nodded.

"Yes.""

The honesty surprised me.

Then he looked at my mother.

"And she lied to you.""

My mother closed her eyes.

Richard took a step forward.

"The fire was never about destroying you.""

I waited.

"Then what was it about?""

He looked at the entire Mercer family.

Then at me.

"It was about erasing your father’s final discovery.""

My heartbeat increased.

"What discovery?""

Richard looked toward the doors.

Toward the darkness outside.

Then he whispered:

"That Caroline Ashford was the rightful owner of everything the Mercer family built.""

Silence.

Nobody moved.

Because suddenly I understood.

The fire.

The lies.

The fake death.

The missing inheritance.

It was never just about revenge.

It was about ownership.

Power.

And my existence was the one thing standing between them and everything they wanted.

Then Richard said the words that changed the entire story.

"Caroline, your father didn’t die because he discovered a secret.""

May you like

He looked at me.

"He died because he discovered you.""
