Chapter 7

The park looked exactly the same.

The same oak trees. The same walking paths. The same old bench where Daniel had kissed me for the first time.

I got there early. I sat on that same bench and waited.

Daniel showed up at 10 AM exactly. He was wearing jeans and a sweater. The same sweater he'd worn on our first date.

He sat down beside me, leaving a respectful distance between us.

"Thank you for meeting me," he said.

I nodded. "You said you wanted to talk."

"I do," he said. He took a deep breath. "First, I want to apologize. Properly. Not just for last night. For everything. For the first time Madison made a joke about your mother and I laughed. For every holiday dinner where I sat there and said nothing. For every time I promised 'next time' and there was no next time. I was weak, Claire. I was a coward. And I hurt the woman I love more than anything in the world."

He turned to look at me, and his eyes were full of tears.

"I grew up in that family," he said. "I learned that you don't rock the boat. That you keep the peace no matter what. And when you came into my life... you were different. You were kind. You were strong. You didn't care about money or status. You cared about people. And I was so scared of losing my family's approval that I was willing to lose you instead. That's the worst mistake I've ever made."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small box. Not a ring box. Something else.

He opened it. Inside was a key.

"This is the key to the house," he said. "I've changed the locks. Madison doesn't have a key anymore. My parents don't have a key anymore. It's our house. And you decide who comes in. And when. And for how long."

He handed me the key.

"I've also set up a separate bank account," he said. "In your name only. I put $100,000 in it. It's yours. No strings attached. For you to do whatever you want. For your parents. For the lawyer fees. For whatever you need."

I stared at the key in my hand. Then at him.

"Why are you doing this?" I asked.

"Because I love you," he said. "And because I need you to know that I'm serious. That this isn't just words. I'm changing, Claire. I'm becoming the man you deserve. The man I promised to be when I married you."

He paused.

"I talked to my father yesterday," he said. "I told him that I'm stepping back from the family business. That I'm going to start my own company. Something separate. Something that doesn't depend on the credit line you guaranteed. I'm working with a lawyer to restructure everything. To get you out of that guarantee. It's going to take time. But I'm doing it. For you."

I felt tears in my eyes.

This was everything I'd wanted. Everything I'd hoped for.

But it was also scary.

"What if you change your mind?" I whispered. "What if your family gets to you again?"

"They won't," he said, taking my hand. "Because I finally realized something. They're not my family. Not really. Family is supposed to love you. Support you. Make you better. All they've ever done is tear me down. Make me feel small. Make me choose between them and the woman I love."

He squeezed my hand.

"You're my family, Claire. You and your parents. That's it. That's all I need."

I looked at him. Really looked at him.

And for the first time in a long time, I believed him.

"I'm not ready to move back in yet," I said. "I need more time. I need to see that this is real. That it's not just temporary."

"I understand," he said. "Take all the time you need. I'll wait. Forever if I have to."

I leaned over and kissed him. Softly. Gently.

May you like

It was the first time I'd kissed him in months.

And it felt like coming home.
