Chapter 7: The Man Who Came Back From the Past

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

It was as if the entire hallway had forgotten how to breathe.

Daniel Cross.

The name that had lived in old documents.

The name my family had whispered around.

The name connected to the darkest chapter of my mother’s life.

He was alive.

And he had called my father.

I looked at Richard.

“Why did he call you?””

My father didn’t answer.

That terrified me more than anything.

Because Richard always had an answer.

Even when the answer was painful.

Even when it was complicated.

But now he looked like a man standing in front of something he had spent decades running from.

“I don’t know,” he finally said.

Thomas immediately shook his head.

“That’s not true.””

Richard looked at him.

“Don’t start.””

“No.””

Thomas stepped closer.

“Not anymore.””

The anger between them was different now.

Before, it had been about Rachel.

About choices.

About the past.

Now it was about fear.

“He knows,” Thomas said.

My heart tightened.

“Knows what?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at all of them.

“Someone needs to stop doing that.””

My voice echoed through the hallway.

“Everyone keeps saying things halfway and expecting me to fill in the blanks.””

I pointed toward the ballroom.

“My entire life has been a blank.””

My hands shook.

“So tell me the whole story.””

Richard looked down.

Then he nodded.

“Daniel knew about you.””

I waited.

“That’s not the whole story.””

“No.””

He took a breath.

“When Rachel died, Daniel tried to challenge everything.””

“Meaning?””

“He claimed he was your legal father.””

My stomach twisted.

“But he wasn’t.””

“Biologically, no.””

Richard looked at Thomas.

“But legally, because of the marriage, it was complicated.””

I felt sick.

“So what happened?””

“Your mother had left documents.””

“What documents?””

“Proof.””

“Proof of what?””

Richard looked at me.

“That Daniel had no right to raise you.””

The words should have comforted me.

They didn’t.

Because they raised another question.

“What did she know about him?””

Richard didn’t answer.

Thomas did.

“She knew he was dangerous.””

The hallway went silent.

My chest tightened.

“How?””

Thomas looked away.

“Because she had lived it.””

I wanted to ask a hundred questions.

But one came out first.

“Did he hurt her?””

Nobody spoke.

That was enough.

I closed my eyes.

My mother.

The woman who smiled in every photograph.

The woman who sang while making dinner.

The woman who told me monsters only existed in fairy tales.

She had been fighting one in real life.

And nobody told me.

“He hurt her,” Richard finally said.

His voice was barely audible.

“More than anyone knew.””

I looked at him.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“And you still let me believe everything was normal?””

His face broke.

“I was trying to give you a normal life.””

I shook my head.

“Normal isn’t the same as honest.””

He looked like he wanted to argue.

But he couldn’t.

Because I was right.

A hotel employee walked past again.

This time, nobody pretended not to notice.

The entire hallway had become a place where secrets were finally being dragged into the light.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“There’s something else.””

Everyone turned.

I looked at her.

“What?””

She hesitated.

For the first time tonight, she looked afraid.

Not angry.

Afraid.

“I wasn’t supposed to find those documents.””

“What documents?””

“The ones about Daniel.””

My stomach tightened.

“How did you find them?””

“In Grandma’s storage.””

Grandma looked down.

Vanessa continued.

“I found a box with Mom’s name on it.””

She swallowed.

“Inside were letters.””

“Letters from Daniel?””

“No.””

Her eyes moved toward Thomas.

“Letters from Thomas.””

Thomas looked surprised.

“From me?””

“Yes.””

I frowned.

“Why would my mother keep letters from Thomas?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Because she never stopped loving him.””

Nobody spoke.

The words were painful.

But somehow, after everything tonight, they weren’t surprising anymore.

“She kept every letter,” Vanessa said.

“Where are they?””

Her expression changed.

“They’re gone.””

“What?””

“I found them years ago.””

“And?””

“Dad took them.””

Everyone looked at Richard.

My father didn’t deny it.

I felt my heart sink.

“Why?””

Richard looked exhausted.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

“That if you read them, you would leave.””

The honesty hurt.

But it was also the first time all night he had stopped defending himself.

“You thought knowing the truth would make me stop loving you?””

Richard’s eyes filled.

“I thought you would realize I wasn’t your real father.””

The words broke something in me.

Because suddenly I understood.

This wasn’t just about secrets.

It was about fear.

My father had spent thirty years terrified of losing a daughter who had never been his by blood.

And maybe that fear had made him make terrible choices.

But there was still one person missing.

The man who had just called.

Daniel.

My phone vibrated.

Everyone looked at me.

I pulled it out.

Unknown number.

My hands went cold.

“He has my number.””

Nobody answered.

The screen lit up again.

A message appeared.

*Nora, I know they told you I was a monster.*

I stared.

Another message arrived.

*They lied about what happened the night you were born.*

My breathing stopped.

Thomas moved closer.

“Don’t answer.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because he’s trying to control the situation.””

Richard nodded.

“He always did that.””

I looked back at the phone.

Another message.

*I have proof.*

Then:

*Meet me, and I’ll show you what your family has hidden.*

My fingers trembled.

“Delete it.””

Richard’s voice was firm.

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because he wants you scared.””

“But what if he’s telling the truth?””

Nobody had an answer.

Because that was the terrifying part.

After tonight, I didn’t know who to trust.

The people who loved me had lied.

The person who disappeared had a story.

The person everyone feared claimed he had proof.

My whole life had become a question.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Nora.””

I looked at her.

“I know you hate me right now.””

I didn’t respond.

“But please.””

Her voice cracked.

“Don’t go alone.””

The words surprised me.

Because an hour ago, she had been the person who hurt me most.

Now she sounded like someone trying to protect me.

“I don’t know what to believe.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

“No, Vanessa.””

I looked at the ballroom doors.

“I don’t know if I know any of you.””

That hurt all of them.

Including me.

Because I didn’t want it to be true.

I wanted my family back.

But I couldn’t return to something that had never existed.

My phone buzzed again.

One final message.

This time, there was a photo attached.

I opened it.

And my entire body went cold.

It was a photograph from the hospital the night I was born.

My mother was lying in bed.

She looked exhausted.

A newborn baby was wrapped in her arms.

Me.

Standing beside the bed was a man.

Daniel.

But that wasn’t what made me freeze.

It was the person standing on the other side of the bed.

Holding my mother’s hand.

A person who should not have been there.

A person my entire family had spent years pretending was nowhere near us.

I zoomed in.

My heart stopped.

Because written on the back of the photograph was a date.

And underneath it, one sentence:

*The night Nora disappeared from me, Richard was the one who took her.*

I looked up slowly.

My father’s face had gone white.

“Dad…”

He closed his eyes.

And for the first time, he didn’t say he was sorry.

He said:

“Daniel is lying.””

A pause.

May you like

Then, quietly:

“But not about everything.””
