Chapter 6: The Seven Minutes That Changed Everything

I read the message three times.

Then a fourth.

Not because I didn't understand the words.

Because I didn't want to.

*Ask him why he left your father alive for exactly seven minutes before calling emergency services.*

My fingers went numb around my phone.

Seven minutes.

A number that should have meant nothing.

A random detail.

But it didn't feel random.

Because my father had died alone.

That was what everyone told me.

A heart attack in his office.

A tragic accident.

A man who spent his entire life building an empire and died quietly before he could say goodbye.

But now someone was telling me there had been seven minutes.

Seven minutes where Daniel Hayes was there.

Seven minutes where my father was alive.

Seven minutes where someone could have changed everything.

James watched my face carefully.

"Mara.""

I locked my phone.

"Don't.""

His expression changed.

"What?""

"Don't ask me what it says.""

"Why?""

"Because I don't know if I want the answer.""

For once, James didn't argue.

He understood.

Some truths don't hurt because they are shocking.

They hurt because they destroy the version of the past you survived with.

I looked back at the courthouse.

Daniel Hayes was inside.

The man who pulled me from fire.

The man who told the jury my scars were real.

The man my father trusted.

Or maybe the man my father feared.

I hated that I couldn't tell the difference.

"Mara.""

James lowered his voice.

"Who sent it?""

"I don't know.""

"Do you believe it?""

I looked at him.

That was the worst part.

"I don't know.""

James sighed.

"Then we need facts.""

Facts.

Always facts.

I nodded.

But as we walked back inside, one thought followed me.

The battlefield had taught me how to recognize danger.

Sometimes it wasn't the person holding the weapon.

Sometimes it was the person standing beside you saying they were there to help.

When we returned to the courtroom, Daniel was waiting near the witness area.

His eyes found mine immediately.

He knew something was wrong.

He always knew.

"Mara.""

I stopped.

For a second, I considered asking him.

Just asking.

Did you let my father die?

But the words wouldn't come.

Because if he said yes...

I didn't know what I would do.

James stepped between us.

"Major Hayes.""

Daniel looked at him.

"We need to discuss something.""

Daniel's eyes moved back to me.

"Alone?""

"No," I said.

The word came out faster than expected.

His expression changed slightly.

Not anger.

Pain.

That hurt more.

"Okay.""

We moved into an empty conference room near the courtroom.

The door closed.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Daniel said:

"What did you receive?""

I froze.

"You know?""

He looked away.

"Mara.""

"No.""

My voice hardened.

"You don't get to do that.""

"Do what?""

"Act like you know everything but refuse to tell me anything.""

He stayed silent.

I pulled out my phone.

"Someone sent me a message.""

His face changed.

Not dramatically.

But enough.

"What did it say?""

I stared at him.

"You tell me.""

A long pause.

Then:

"Did it mention your father?""

My chest tightened.

"Yes.""

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

Like he had been expecting this day.

"What happened?""

I stepped closer.

"That's what I'm asking you.""

Silence.

Then I said the words.

"The message said you were there when my father died.""

Daniel didn't move.

"The message said you waited seven minutes before calling emergency services.""

His face went pale.

And that was the answer.

Not a confession.

Not yet.

But a reaction.

A reaction from someone who knew exactly what seven minutes meant.

"Daniel.""

He looked at me.

"Your father was already dying when I arrived.""

The room became colder.

"When?""

"The night before his death.""

I stared.

"What?""

"I went to see him.""

"Why?""

"Because he called me.""

My heart pounded.

"My father called you?""

"Yes.""

"And you never told me?""

"I promised him.""

The anger came suddenly.

"You promised him?""

My voice rose.

"You promised a dead man while I spent months wondering what happened?""

Daniel looked down.

"I was trying to protect you.""

"Everyone keeps saying that.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Everyone keeps protecting me by keeping me in the dark.""

Daniel didn't respond.

"Tell me what happened.""

He was quiet for a long time.

Then he spoke.

"Your father had proof.""

"Proof of what?""

"That Caleb wasn't acting alone.""

I already knew that.

But hearing it again made it worse.

"Who was helping him?""

Daniel looked toward the door.

Then back at me.

"I can't say.""

I almost couldn't believe it.

"Still?""

"Mara—"

"No.""

I shook my head.

"You don't get to come into a courtroom, tell everyone I was a hero, then disappear behind classified excuses when I ask about my father's death.""

His jaw tightened.

"You think I don't want to tell you?""

"I think you know more than you're saying.""

He looked at me.

"I do.""

The honesty surprised me.

Then came the words I wasn't prepared for.

"But the truth is worse than you think.""

I stopped.

"What does that mean?""

Daniel took a breath.

"Your father wasn't killed because Caleb wanted the company.""

My stomach dropped.

"What?""

"He was killed because he was going to expose someone.""

The room went silent.

I stared at him.

"My father wasn't sick?""

Daniel didn't answer.

That was enough.

"No.""

My voice broke.

"No, they told me he had a heart attack.""

Daniel looked devastated.

"I know.""

"Who told you?""

"Caleb.""

The room spun.

I grabbed the edge of the table.

"My brother told you?""

"Yes.""

"When?""

"That night.""

The messages.

The seven minutes.

Everything connected.

"Why would Caleb call you?""

Daniel looked at me.

"Because he needed someone he thought people would trust.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

"He used you.""

Daniel didn't answer.

Because he knew.

The door suddenly opened.

James stepped inside.

"Mara.""

He looked between us.

"What happened?""

Before I could answer, Daniel's phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His entire expression changed.

"What?""

I watched him.

"Where?""

A pause.

Then his face went completely still.

"Don't let anyone touch anything.""

He ended the call.

"What is it?"" I asked.

Daniel looked at me.

And I knew before he spoke.

Something terrible had happened.

"Someone broke into your father's old office.""

James frowned.

"At Bennett Meridian?""

Daniel nodded.

"No.""

A pause.

"At his private residence.""

My heart sank.

"My house?""

Daniel looked at me.

"No.""

Then he said the words that made my blood run cold.

"Your father's hidden office.""

I stared.

"My father had a hidden office?""

Daniel didn't answer.

Because he knew the next part mattered more.

"The person who broke in wasn't searching for documents.""

"Then what were they looking for?""

Daniel looked directly at me.

"They were looking for something your father left behind.""

"What?""

His voice dropped.

"The original evidence.""

I swallowed.

"What evidence?""

Daniel looked toward the courtroom.

Toward Caleb.

Toward the brother who had spent weeks trying to make me look like a liar.

Then he said:

"The evidence proving who really ordered the attack that nearly killed you.""

The air disappeared from my lungs.

Because suddenly I understood.

This entire case.

The accusations.

The fake will.

The attack on my military record.

None of it was about inheritance.

It was about one thing.

Someone wanted the truth buried.

And they were willing to destroy me to keep it hidden.

Daniel moved toward the door.

"Mara, we have to go.""

I followed.

"Where?""

He looked at me.

"To your father's hidden office.""

"Why?""

His expression darkened.

"Because if someone already found it...""

A pause.

"They may have already found what was inside.""

We reached the hallway.

But before we left, my phone buzzed again.

Another unknown message.

This time there was a picture attached.

I opened it.

And my entire body froze.

It was a photograph of my father.

Taken the night he died.

He was standing beside someone.

Someone I recognized.

Someone I never expected to see.

May you like

Underneath the image were five words.

*You trusted the wrong hero.*
