Chapter 4: Someone Was Inside My House

The message stayed on my screen.

*STOP ASKING QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS HOUSE, OR YOU'LL END UP LIKE DANIEL.*

For a few seconds, nobody spoke.

The woman at Mr. Henderson’s door stared at my phone.

Mr. Henderson stared at me.

And all I could hear was the hum of his refrigerator from the kitchen.

I pressed the call button.

The unknown number disappeared.

No answer.

I tried again.

Nothing.

"Don't keep calling," the woman said.

Her voice was sharp enough to make me stop.

I looked at her.

"Why?""

"Because whoever sent that wanted you to react.""

"Well, they got what they wanted.""

I turned the screen toward her.

"Who are you?""

She hesitated.

"Melissa Carter.""

The last name hit me immediately.

"Carter?""

She nodded.

"I'm Daniel's sister.""

I looked at Mr. Henderson.

He seemed just as surprised as I was.

"You told me Daniel moved away," I said.

Mr. Henderson's jaw tightened.

"That's what Richard told everyone.""

Melissa stepped inside and closed the door behind her.

"No. Daniel was supposed to leave.""

"Supposed to?""

She looked at the flash drive.

"He had packed his car. He had found an apartment outside the county. He had already sent me some boxes.""

"What stopped him?""

Melissa looked at me.

"I don't know.""

That answer irritated me.

"You came here carrying a flash drive Daniel sent you, and you're telling me you don't know what happened?""

"I know what he told me before he vanished.""

"Then tell me.""

She glanced toward the front window.

"The night before he disappeared, Daniel called me.""

Mr. Henderson pulled the curtain closed.

Melissa continued.

"He was scared.""

"What did he say?""

"He said Richard had found out.""

"Found out what?""

"That Daniel had copied the HOA financial records.""

I looked at the flash drive.

"Those are on there?""

"Maybe.""

"Maybe?""

Melissa rubbed both hands together.

"I've never opened it.""

I stared at her.

"Why not?""

"Because the note told me not to.""

Mr. Henderson unfolded Daniel's handwritten message.

There was more writing beneath the words THE HOUSE REMEMBERS.

He read quietly.

Then his eyes lifted.

"What else does it say?"" I asked.

He handed me the page.

The rest was written in hurried block letters.

**MELISSA — DO NOT OPEN THE DRIVE. DO NOT GIVE IT TO POLICE UNTIL YOU FIND THE RECORDING. THE DRIVE SHOWS THE MONEY.

THE RECORDING SHOWS WHO WAS THERE. IF I DON'T CALL YOU BY FRIDAY, SOMETHING HAPPENED. THE HOUSE REMEMBERS.**

I read it twice.

"What recording?""

Melissa shook her head.

"That's the question I've been asking for almost two years.""

I looked up sharply.

"Two years?""

She nodded.

"Daniel disappeared twenty-two months ago.""

"But I bought his house three months ago.""

"No.""

Melissa's expression hardened.

"You bought the house that Richard spent almost two years trying to control.""

My stomach tightened.

"Explain that.""

She pulled out a chair.

"When Daniel vanished, the HOA placed liens against the property.""

"For what?""

"Violations.""

I almost laughed.

Of course.

"What kind?""

"Landscaping. Trash bins. A fence repair. An unauthorized porch light.

Then legal fees. Administrative fees. Late fees.""

Mr. Henderson shook his head.

"None of those liens made sense.""

Melissa looked at him.

"They weren't supposed to.""

I sat down.

"So Richard buried the house in fake debt?""

"Exactly.""

"Why?""

"To stop anyone from touching it.""

I looked at Daniel's note.

The house remembers.

Richard wasn't afraid of the house.

He was afraid of something inside it.

I stood suddenly.

"We're going back.""

Melissa grabbed my wrist.

"No.""

I looked down at her hand.

Then at her.

"My house may contain evidence connected to your brother.""

"And whoever threatened you knows that.""

"Exactly.""

She released me.

"That is why you shouldn't go back.""

I picked up the flash drive.

"No. That's why I need to get there before they do.""

Mr. Henderson stood.

"I'm coming.""

Melissa closed her eyes.

"This is a terrible idea.""

"Then stay here," I said.

She stared at me.

"I didn't wait almost two years to stay behind now.""

Ten minutes later, the three of us crossed the street.

Nothing looked different.

That was what frightened me most.

Children's bicycles rested beside garages.

A sprinkler clicked steadily two houses down.

Someone's television played behind an open window.

The neighborhood looked like the safest place in America.

And someone had just threatened to make me disappear.

I reached my front door.

Then stopped.

The red paint was still wet around the frame.

But there was a mark near the lock.

A thin silver scratch.

I touched it.

"This wasn't here before.""

Mr. Henderson leaned closer.

"Are you sure?""

"I painted this whole door myself.""

Melissa stepped backward.

"Someone tried to get in.""

I pulled out my key.

"Or someone did.""

The lock turned.

We entered.

The living room looked normal.

Couch.

Coffee table.

Books.

The half-open box I still hadn't unpacked.

Nothing obvious.

I took two steps.

Then froze.

"What?""

Mr. Henderson followed my stare.

On the floor near the hallway was a red footprint.

Not paint from my shoes.

The shape was larger.

A man's shoe.

Someone had walked through the paint outside.

Then walked into my house.

Melissa whispered, "Call the police.""

I pulled out my phone.

Then another thought stopped me.

Daniel's note.

*DO NOT GIVE IT TO POLICE UNTIL YOU FIND THE RECORDING.*

Why?

Mr. Henderson saw my hesitation.

"What's wrong?""

"If Daniel didn't trust the police...""

Melissa looked uncomfortable.

"He trusted some of them.""

"Some?""

"There was one officer he kept mentioning.""

"Who?""

"I don't know. He never gave me a name.""

I looked at the footprint again.

"Then we search first.""

Mr. Henderson frowned.

"Search for what?""

"The recording.""

I followed the prints.

They continued down the hallway.

One.

Two.

Three.

Then disappeared where the paint had worn off the shoe.

The trail ended outside my office.

My door was open.

I never left it open.

I pushed it wider.

Drawers had been pulled out.

Papers scattered across the floor.

My laptop sat untouched.

Cash in a small dish was still there.

My camera was still on the shelf.

"They weren't robbing you," Melissa said.

"No.""

I crouched beside the papers.

"They were looking for something.""

Mr. Henderson turned in a slow circle.

"Something Daniel left.""

I looked at the walls.

"Where would you hide a recording for two years?""

Melissa answered immediately.

"Somewhere Richard couldn't remove it.""

That changed everything.

I walked through the house differently after that.

Not as the owner.

As someone searching a crime scene.

Kitchen cabinets.

Closets.

Air vents.

Under floorboards where I could lift an edge.

Nothing.

Then Melissa stopped at the staircase.

"What was here?""

I looked at her.

"What?""

She pointed at the wall.

"Daniel had something here.""

The spot was empty.

"What kind of thing?""

"A thermostat.""

I laughed.

"The thermostat is over there.""

I pointed down the hall.

Melissa shook her head.

"No. His old one was here.""

Mr. Henderson looked at the wall.

"Are you sure?""

"I visited enough times to remember.""

I ran my fingers across the drywall.

There was a faint rectangular outline beneath the newer paint.

My pulse changed.

"Get me a screwdriver.""

Five minutes later, I removed the wall plate.

Behind it was a shallow cavity.

Empty.

Almost.

At the bottom sat a tiny piece of black plastic.

I reached in.

Pulled it out.

A broken memory card.

Melissa's face fell.

"They found it.""

"Maybe.""

I examined it.

The card had been snapped in half.

But something else was strange.

It was sitting loose.

Too visible.

Almost staged.

Mr. Henderson seemed to realize the same thing.

"Daniel wouldn't hide evidence that badly.""

"No.""

I looked at the cavity.

"This was meant to make someone think the evidence was destroyed.""

Melissa's eyes widened.

"You think Daniel planted a decoy?""

"I think he expected someone to search.""

I replaced the plate.

Then something clicked in my head.

The house remembers.

Not the walls.

Not a hidden box.

The house itself.

I walked outside.

"Where are you going?"" Melissa called.

I turned toward the front door.

The red door.

Then looked above it.

A small old-fashioned porch light was mounted beside the frame.

One of the fake fines Melissa had mentioned.

*Unauthorized porch light.*

I stared at it.

"Daniel was fined for changing this?""

Melissa stepped beside me.

"Yes.""

"When?""

"A few weeks before he disappeared.""

I grabbed a ladder from my garage.

Mr. Henderson looked up.

"What are you thinking?""

"Richard fined him for installing something.""

I climbed.

"Maybe it wasn't just a light.""

I unscrewed the glass cover.

Dust fell onto my shirt.

Inside was an ordinary bulb.

But behind the fixture, between the mounting plate and the wall, I felt something taped to the siding.

Small.

Flat.

I pulled it free.

A microSD card wrapped in plastic.

Nobody spoke.

I climbed down carefully.

Melissa's hands began shaking.

"Oh my God.""

"This might be it.""

We went inside.

I inserted the card into my laptop.

One folder appeared.

*FRONT PORCH — ARCHIVE*

Inside were dozens of video files.

Dated over several months.

Daniel had installed a hidden camera.

Not pointed at the street.

Pointed directly toward the front entry and part of the living room through the glass beside the door.

Melissa covered her mouth.

"He recorded everything.""

I opened the final file.

The date was twenty-two months earlier.

The night Daniel disappeared.

The video began at 9:14 p.m.

Daniel appeared first.

He paced across the living room holding a folder.

He checked the window twice.

At 9:23, headlights crossed the glass.

A car stopped outside.

Daniel opened the door.

Richard walked in.

Melissa inhaled sharply.

"I knew it.""

But Richard wasn't alone.

A second man followed.

Tall.

Gray jacket.

Baseball cap pulled low.

Daniel immediately stepped backward.

There was no audio.

Only video.

Richard pointed at the folder.

Daniel shook his head.

The second man moved toward him.

Daniel tried to close the door.

Richard blocked it.

Then the second man grabbed Daniel by the shirt and shoved him against the wall.

Melissa made a broken sound beside me.

Mr. Henderson whispered, "Jesus.""

Daniel fought free.

He reached for something on the table.

A phone.

Richard knocked it away.

Then all three men disappeared deeper into the house.

For almost four minutes, the camera showed nothing.

Then Richard returned.

Alone.

He picked up Daniel's phone.

Put it in his pocket.

He wiped the door handle with his sleeve.

Then he looked directly toward the hidden camera.

My stomach dropped.

For one terrifying second, I thought he knew exactly where it was.

But he turned away.

At 9:31, the second man reappeared.

He was dragging Daniel.

Daniel's legs barely moved.

Melissa started crying.

"No.""

The two men carried him outside.

The video continued.

A dark vehicle backed into the driveway.

They loaded Daniel into it.

Richard returned one final time.

He stood in the doorway and spoke to someone outside.

Then something unexpected happened.

A third person appeared from inside the house.

Not a stranger.

A woman.

She stepped into view.

Mr. Henderson grabbed the edge of the desk.

Melissa stopped breathing.

I leaned closer to the screen.

Because I knew her.

I had seen her less than an hour earlier.

Standing in my yard.

Screaming about my red front door.

Karen.

She looked directly at Richard.

Then handed him Daniel's folder.

Melissa whispered, "She was there.""

I felt sick.

Karen hadn't just known Richard was lying.

She hadn't just helped enforce fake rules.

She had been inside Daniel's house the night he vanished.

Then the final seconds of the recording played.

Karen turned toward the camera.

Her face came clearly into view.

And although there was no sound, I could read her lips.

She said six words.

May you like

Six words that changed everything.

*"What do we do with him now?""*
