Chapter 10

Evelyn was arrested again.

This time, the judge wasn't lenient.

She had violated a permanent restraining order.

In public.

In front of witnesses.

In front of police officers.

She was sentenced to three more years in prison.

No parole.

No early release.

She would be inside for three full years.

It was a victory.

But it felt hollow.

Because we knew.

In three years, she would be out again.

And she would be even angrier.

Even more determined.

And Daniel would be older.

More vulnerable.

We needed a permanent solution.

Something that would keep Evelyn away forever.

Something that would make sure she could never hurt our son.

Our lawyer had an idea.

Termination of parental rights.

Or at least, termination of Evelyn's rights as a grandmother.

It was rare.

It was hard to prove.

But if we could show that Evelyn was a danger to Daniel.

That she would continue to harass and threaten us.

That she would never be a positive influence in his life.

We might be able to get her rights terminated.

We would never have to worry about her again.

She would have no legal right to see Daniel.

To contact him.

To be part of his life.

Ever.

It was a long shot.

But we had to try.

For Daniel.

We filed the petition.

Evelyn was served in prison.

She fought it.

Hard.

She hired another expensive lawyer.

She claimed we were alienating her from her grandson.

She claimed we were abusive parents.

She claimed we were unfit.

She lied.

And lied.

And lied.

The case dragged on for months.

It was exhausting.

Emotionally. Financially. Physically.

But we kept fighting.

For Daniel.

For our family.

For our future.

Finally, the day of the hearing arrived.

We presented our evidence.

The bugs. The threats. The letters.

The break-in. The park incident.

The police reports. The court records.

The restraining orders.

We showed the judge that Evelyn was a danger.

That she was obsessed.

That she would never stop.

And that allowing her to have any rights to Daniel would put him in danger.

Evelyn's lawyer tried to paint her as a loving grandmother.

A woman who had been unfairly kept from her grandson.

A woman who only wanted to love him.

But the evidence was against her.

The judge listened carefully.

He asked questions.

He looked at all the evidence.

And then...

He made his decision.

"After careful consideration of all the evidence," the judge said. "I find that the respondent, Evelyn Carter, is a danger to the minor child, Daniel Carter. Her history of harassment, threats, violence, and illegal surveillance demonstrates that she is unable to act in the best interests of the child. Her continued obsession with the child and the child's parents puts the child at significant emotional and physical risk."

He paused.

"Therefore, it is ordered that all parental and grandparental rights of Evelyn Carter regarding the minor child, Daniel Carter, are hereby permanently terminated. The respondent shall have no right to contact the child, to attempt to contact the child, or to have any information regarding the child's whereabouts, education, or well-being. This order is permanent and non-appealable."

It was done.

Evelyn had no rights.

No legal claim to Daniel.

Nothing.

We had won.

Mark squeezed my hand so tight I thought my fingers would break.

But I didn't care.

We had won.

For Daniel.

For our family.

May you like

Forever.
