Chapter 10

I hung up on Linda.

I didn't say anything.

I didn't need to.

Her victory was clear in her voice.

But I wasn't defeated.

Not anymore.

I went to my father.

He was sitting in his study, staring at the news on his computer.

His face was tired.

But his eyes were still sharp.

"She's good," he said. "I'll give her that. She's been planning this for a long time."

"We can prove it's a lie," I said.

"We can," he said. "But not in time for the custody hearing. The damage is already done. The judge will see this. And Linda will use it. She'll say Emma shouldn't be raised in a family of murderers."

"Then we fight harder," I said.

Mr. Chen arrived an hour later.

He brought good news and bad news.

"The good news," he said. "The lab confirmed it. The vial has Linda's fingerprints. And traces of digoxin. And Richard's DNA on the rim. We have enough to reopen the case into Richard's death."

"And the bad news?"

"The witness against your father," he said. "He's credible. Or at least he looks credible. He's a former employee of yours. He says your father paid him $50,000 to kill Richard. And he has bank records showing a $50,000 deposit twelve years ago."

"From me?" my father asked.

"From an account that traces back to you," Mr. Chen said. "But it's a shell company. We can prove it was Linda's account. But it will take time. Time we don't have before the custody hearing."

I thought about Daniel.

About his promise to testify.

"Daniel is going to testify against Linda," I said.

Mr. Chen looked surprised.

"Is he now?"

"He said he's had enough," I said. "He's going to tell the court everything. About his father's death. About Linda's threats. About the plan to take Emma."

"That could change everything," Mr. Chen said. "But Daniel Harrington has a lot of credibility issues. He stayed silent for twelve years. He went along with the marriage scheme. The judge may not believe him."

"Then we need more," I said.

That afternoon, Margaret came to me.

She was still in the safe room.

But she looked calmer now.

Braver.

"I've been thinking," she said. "About that night. About Linda. And I remembered something. Something I haven't thought about in years."

"What is it?"

"Richard had a safe," she said. "In his study. Behind the painting of the old house. He kept important documents there. Things he didn't want Linda to find. He told me the combination once. In case anything ever happened to him."

"What was in the safe?"

"I don't know," she said. "But he said it was 'insurance.' That if Linda ever tried to hurt him or anyone he loved, the contents of that safe would destroy her."

I looked at my father.

"We need to get into that house," I said.

"Linda has security," my father said. "Cameras. Guards. We can't just break in."

"Daniel can," I said. "He still has keys. He still has access. And he owes us this."

I called Daniel.

He agreed immediately.

That night, we met him near the Harrington house.

My father's security team was positioned around the property.

Daniel had a key.

He let us in through the back door.

The house was dark.

Linda was out. At some charity event, Daniel said.

We had forty-five minutes.

We went to Richard's study.

The painting was still there.

A big oil painting of the Harrington ancestral home.

Daniel moved it aside.

There was the safe.

Old. Heavy. Metal.

Margaret dialed the combination.

24-12-7.

Richard's birthday.

The safe clicked open.

Inside were stacks of papers.

And a recording device.

Old-fashioned. Cassette tapes.

"This is it," Margaret said.

We started going through the papers.

Bank records proving Linda's embezzlement.

Letters from attorneys about the divorce.

Threatening letters Linda had written to Richard.

And then I found it.

A will.

Dated three days before Richard died.

He'd changed it.

He'd left everything to Daniel.

Nothing to Linda.

"She didn't know," I whispered. "She thought she was inheriting everything. But he'd already changed the will."

"She must have found out," Daniel said. "That's why she killed him. She knew if he divorced her or died after changing the will, she'd get nothing."

"And then she forged a new will," my father said. "One that left everything to her."

"She's been living off stolen money for twelve years," I said.

Daniel found the cassette tapes.

He put one in the old player in the study.

Richard's voice filled the room.

*"If you're listening to this, I'm dead. And Linda killed me. She's been threatening me for months. She says if I divorce her, she'll make sure I regret it. She says she'll destroy Daniel. She'll turn him against me. She'll make sure he never knows what kind of woman his mother really is..."*

The tape continued.

Richard detailed everything.

Linda's embezzlement.

Her threats.

Her plan to marry Daniel off to my father's daughter for revenge.

*"I don't know if I can stop her,"* Richard's voice said. "But if I can't, maybe this tape will. Maybe it will protect Daniel. And maybe it will protect that poor girl Linda has set her sights on. Sarah Carter. She doesn't know what she's walking into."

Tears ran down my face.

Richard Harrington had known.

Twelve years ago.

He'd known his wife would try to use his son to get to me.

And he'd tried to warn me.

From beyond the grave.

"We have everything now," my father said. "The will. The tapes. The vial. Margaret's testimony. Daniel's testimony. Linda is finished."

But just then, we heard the front door open.

May you like

And Linda's voice filled the house.

"Daniel?" she called. "Are you home, darling? I brought someone to see you."
