Chapter 7: The Truth Buried Under My Own Name
The screen continued flashing.
*OPERATION BLACK DAWN — ORIGINAL COMMANDER LOGS UNLOCKED.*
Beneath it:
*SUBJECT: COMMANDER EMILY HAYES.*
For several seconds, I could only stare.
My own name had never looked so unfamiliar.
It was not listed as commander.
Not as officer.
Not as survivor.
As a subject.
An experiment.
A target.
I had spent my entire career believing I understood every mission I had been part of.
I believed I knew the sacrifices.
The losses.
The reasons behind every order.
But now I was looking at evidence that someone had been studying me long before I realized there was a game being played.
The speaker remained silent.
I stepped closer to the monitor.
“Whoever is listening…”
No response.
I kept going.
“You wanted me to find this.””
Still nothing.
That was when I understood.
The message was not meant to answer questions.
It was meant to create them.
I pressed the keyboard.
The files opened.
The first document appeared.
*BLACK DAWN INTELLIGENCE REVIEW*
*DATE: SEVEN YEARS AGO*
My eyes moved across the screen.
The operation was familiar.
Too familiar.
Operation Black Dawn was officially described as a failed intelligence extraction mission.
A mission where Colonel Adrian Cole and three other officers were reported killed while attempting to recover stolen military information.
But according to these files...
That was not what happened.
The first paragraph made my chest tighten.
*Colonel Adrian Cole successfully recovered the target intelligence. Casualty report altered to protect classified assets.*
I stopped.
The casualty report was altered.
Meaning Adrian Cole was not killed.
Meaning everyone who attended his funeral...
Everyone who mourned him...
Everyone who believed he sacrificed himself...
Had been lied to.
I kept reading.
*Commander Hayes displayed exceptional adaptability under operational pressure. Subject successfully completed mission objectives despite misinformation and limited resources.*
Subject.
Again that word.
Not officer.
Not commander.
Subject.
Someone had turned my entire career into a study.
A test.
A measurement.
I scrolled further.
Then I saw the name.
*Evaluator: Captain Daniel Voss.*
My stomach tightened.
Voss.
The man who had stood in my office.
The man who claimed he was being framed.
The man who said someone else was behind everything.
Maybe he was telling the truth.
But maybe he was also part of the lie.
I continued reading.
*Recommendation: Continue observation. Subject demonstrates unusual loyalty patterns.*
I frowned.
Loyalty patterns?
Then another line appeared.
*Potential weakness identified: emotional attachment to trusted personnel.*
I leaned back.
They had been studying my relationships.
My trust.
My instincts.
The very things that made me a commander.
The door suddenly unlocked.
I turned quickly.
Major Ellis stood outside.
His face looked tense.
“Commander.””
I stared at him.
“Where were you?””
He stepped inside and closed the door.
“Trying to keep you alive.””
I almost laughed.
“By locking me in a room?””
“By keeping you away from someone.””
“Who?””
He looked at the screen.
Then at me.
“You opened the files.””
It was not a question.
“Yes.””
His expression changed.
Fear.
Not surprise.
Fear.
“What did you see?””
I walked toward him.
“Enough.””
He looked down.
“Commander…”
“Were you part of Black Dawn?””
He froze.
That was all the answer I needed.
“Answer me.””
“Yes.””
The word landed heavily.
I stared at him.
“How?””
“I was a junior intelligence analyst.””
“And you knew about this?””
“I knew parts of it.””
“Parts?””
His voice became defensive.
“Commander, you need to understand. Black Dawn was not what you think.””
“Then explain it.””
He looked exhausted.
Like he had been carrying a burden for years.
“Black Dawn was created after a series of internal security failures. High-ranking officers were leaking information. Entire operations were compromised.””
“So they tested their own people.””
“Yes.””
“They manipulated me.””
“No.””
The answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
I stepped closer.
“Major.””
He looked at me.
“Do not defend them.””
“I’m not.””
“Then what are you doing?””
“Trying to explain.””
He pointed at the screen.
“Black Dawn was designed to identify officers who could operate independently under extreme conditions.””
I stared at him.
“You are describing a test.””
“Yes.””
“A test where you lied to people.””
“Yes.””
“A test where my mentor was declared dead.””
His eyes dropped.
“Yes.””
The anger building inside me was difficult to control.
“Where is Adrian Cole?””
Ellis hesitated.
That hesitation told me he knew.
“You know.””
“I know where he was last seen.””
“Where?””
Ellis looked at the door.
Then lowered his voice.
“Not here.””
I crossed my arms.
“You brought me here to tell me that?””
“No.””
“Then why?””
“Because someone is trying to erase everything.””
“What does that mean?””
He looked at the screen.
“The Black Dawn files were supposed to remain sealed.””
“Why?””
“Because the operation was terminated.””
“By who?””
Ellis hesitated.
Then:
“By Adrian Cole.””
I felt the room shift.
“Adrian ended it?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Ellis looked at me.
“Because he realized they were no longer testing loyalty.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What were they doing?””
Ellis swallowed.
“They were creating it.””
I said nothing.
He continued.
“They stopped observing commanders and started influencing them.””
“Influencing?””
“Manipulating decisions. Relationships. Promotions. Assignments.””
I thought about Ryan.
The hallway.
The note.
The accusations.
Everything.
Someone had not just attacked me.
They had built a situation designed to make me fail.
“Who continued the program?””
Ellis looked away.
“I don’t know.””
“Someone does.””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
He hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Your commander.””
I stared at him.
“General Whitmore?””
Ellis nodded.
The pieces started moving.
The highest-ranking officer.
The person who approved my command.
The person with the authority to alter access.
But something still bothered me.
Voss.
Why was he involved?
Why was his name everywhere?
“Daniel Voss.””
Ellis looked surprised.
“What about him?””
“He was part of Black Dawn.””
“Yes.””
“Was he loyal to them?””
Ellis was silent.
“Major.””
“I don’t know.””
That answer was more frightening than yes.
Before I could ask more, the emergency alarm sounded again.
The lights flickered.
Then every screen in the room went black.
Ellis immediately moved toward the door.
“Stay here.””
I almost smiled.
“After everything that happened, you still think I’ll follow orders without an explanation?””
“Commander, please.””
The fear in his voice stopped me.
Not because of the request.
Because I had never heard him sound like that.
The door opened.
A soldier stood outside.
But something was wrong.
His uniform was correct.
His posture was correct.
Everything looked normal.
Except his eyes.
They were too calm.
“Major Ellis,” the soldier said.
Ellis immediately stepped back.
“How did you get here?””
The soldier smiled slightly.
“I was sent.””
“By who?””
The soldier looked past him.
At me.
“By someone who wants Commander Hayes to remember.””
I felt my hand move toward my sidearm.
The soldier noticed.
“Still trusting instinct.””
He smiled.
“That was always your greatest strength.””
Then he said something that made Ellis go pale.
Something only someone from Black Dawn could know.
“Commander Hayes, do you remember the night Colonel Cole disappeared?””
I stared at him.
“Who are you?””
The soldier reached into his jacket.
Ellis immediately shouted:
“Don’t!””
Too late.
The soldier pulled out a photograph.
He held it toward me.
A photograph of Adrian Cole.
But not alone.
Standing beside him was a younger version of myself.
And behind us...
Was someone else.
Someone I had never noticed.
Someone who had been there during the entire operation.
I looked closer.
My breath stopped.
Because I recognized the face.
The person standing behind Adrian and me was someone I had trusted every single day since joining this unit.
Someone who had been giving me orders.
Someone who had been protecting me.
Someone who had also been controlling me.
The soldier whispered:
“The person you’ve been hunting…”
May you like
He smiled.
“Is the person who trained you to hunt.””
