Chapter 9: The Man Who Knew Before I Did

The name on the DNA test stared back at me.

For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.

I read it once.

Then again.

Then a third time.

Because my mind kept rejecting what my eyes were seeing.

The biological father listed on the document was not Daniel.

It was not some stranger.

It was not someone from my past I had forgotten.

It was someone I knew.

Someone who had been in our lives for years.

Someone who had watched Ethan grow up.

Someone who had smiled at birthday parties.

Someone who had held my son’s hand.

My fingers trembled as I lowered the paper.

“Rachel.””

My voice barely worked.

“Tell me this isn’t real.””

She looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“I wish I could.””

The coffee shop suddenly felt too loud.

People laughed at nearby tables.

A barista called out someone’s order.

A couple walked past the window holding hands.

The world continued.

But mine had stopped.

“Who?”” I whispered.

Rachel looked away.

And somehow, that hurt more than the answer.

“Rachel.””

She closed her eyes.

“Your brother-in-law.””

I froze.

“My what?””

“Daniel’s best friend.””

The room spun.

“No.””

Rachel nodded slowly.

“Ethan’s biological father is Michael.””

I knew the name.

Everyone knew the name.

Michael had been Daniel’s best friend since college.

The man who stood beside him at our wedding.

The man who brought gifts for Ethan every Christmas.

The man who called him “little champion.””

The man who had always told me:

“You’re lucky, Claire. Daniel has a beautiful family.””

I felt sick.

“How?””

Rachel looked down.

“Because Daniel knew.””

Those words were worse than anything else.

“He knew?””

“Yes.””

“How long?””

“Since before Ethan was born.””

I pushed the paper away.

“No.””

Rachel reached across the table.

“Claire—”

“No.””

I stood up.

People turned to look.

I didn’t care.

“Are you telling me my husband knew for ten years that Ethan wasn’t biologically his?””

Rachel stood too.

“Yes.””

“And he said nothing?””

“He couldn’t.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

“Because he needed Ethan.””

The words were like a slap.

“Needed?””

Rachel nodded.

“Daniel built his entire identity around being a perfect husband and father.””

My eyes burned.

“He loved him.””

Rachel hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

“He loved what Ethan represented.””

I shook my head.

“That’s not true.””

“Claire.””

“No.””

I grabbed the papers.

“You don’t get to tell me he didn’t love my son.””

Rachel’s expression softened.

“I’m not saying he didn’t feel anything.””

“Then what are you saying?””

“I’m saying Daniel’s love always came with conditions.””

I looked away.

Because deep down, I knew.

Even with Ethan.

Especially with Ethan.

Daniel loved being needed.

He loved being admired.

He loved being seen as the perfect father.

But did he love Ethan as a person?

Or did he love the role Ethan gave him?

My phone buzzed.

A message from Daniel.

*Now you know.*

My stomach dropped.

Another message.

*Ask yourself why Rachel waited ten years to tell you.*

I looked at Rachel.

She saw my expression.

“What did he say?””

I showed her.

She closed her eyes.

“He’s trying to turn you against me.””

“Is he?””

She looked hurt.

“Claire.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“I need the truth.””

She nodded slowly.

“You deserve it.””

I sat back down.

“Tell me everything.””

Rachel took a deep breath.

“Before you and Daniel got married, he suspected Michael and you had been close.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“I don’t mean a relationship.””

“I never dated Michael.””

“I know.””

“Daniel knew that too.””

“Yes.””

“Then why?””

“Because Daniel was suspicious of everyone.””

Rachel looked at the documents.

“He found out Michael had feelings for you.””

My heart sank.

I remembered.

Small things.

Michael always offering to help.

Always showing up when Daniel was busy.

Always asking if I needed anything.

But I had never thought anything of it.

Because I trusted him.

Because I trusted everyone.

“And Daniel?””

“Daniel saw it as betrayal.””

“From who?””

“Everyone.””

I looked down.

“So he tested Ethan?””

Rachel nodded.

“He secretly arranged the DNA test.””

My chest tightened.

“Without telling me?””

“Yes.””

“And when he found out?””

Rachel’s voice became quiet.

“He decided to keep it.””

“Why?””

“Because he realized something.””

“What?””

“That Ethan was the only thing connecting you to him forever.””

I felt tears forming.

“That’s why he was so afraid of divorce.””

“Yes.””

“He thought I would leave and take Ethan.””

“Yes.””

“But he had no right.””

“No.””

Rachel looked at me.

“But Daniel never cared about rights.””

The truth hurt because it was simple.

Daniel didn’t see people as people.

He saw them as things he could lose.

Things he could own.

Things he could control.

I thought about Ethan.

My sweet, innocent boy.

He had spent his whole life believing Daniel was his father.

And Daniel had spent his whole life using that belief.

“I need to talk to Michael.””

Rachel looked alarmed.

“Are you sure?””

“I need answers.””

“Be careful.””

“Why?””

“Because if Daniel knows you’re looking into this, he’ll move faster.””

“Move faster?””

Rachel looked at the window.

“Daniel knows his image is falling apart.””

I followed her gaze.

Outside, a black SUV sat across the street.

My heart stopped.

“Rachel.””

She looked.

Her face changed.

“He’s here.””

Daniel.

Watching us.

Again.

“He followed me.””

“Probably.””

My hands clenched.

The fear came back.

But this time, it was different.

It wasn’t the fear of a wife trapped in a marriage.

It was the fear of a mother protecting her child.

I stood.

“I’m done hiding.””

Rachel grabbed my arm.

“Claire.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“Before you confront Michael…”

She reached into her bag.

And pulled out a small envelope.

“What is that?””

“The last thing Daniel doesn’t know about.””

My heart raced.

“What?””

Rachel handed it to me.

“Open it when you’re ready.””

I looked at the envelope.

“Why not now?””

“Because once you know, there is no going back.””

I stared at her.

“I already know enough.””

“No.””

Rachel’s eyes filled with sadness.

“You don’t.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was another document.

Not a DNA test.

Not a legal paper.

A letter.

Handwritten.

The handwriting wasn’t Daniel’s.

It was mine.

But I had never written it.

I unfolded the page.

The first line made my blood turn cold.

*Dear Claire,*

*If you are reading this, it means Daniel finally lost control.*

My hands started shaking.

I looked at Rachel.

“What is this?””

She whispered:

“The letter you wrote ten years ago.””

I stared at the page.

“I never wrote this.””

Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes, you did.””

My breathing stopped.

“Why don’t I remember?””

Rachel looked toward the window.

Toward Daniel’s car.

Then back at me.

“Because Daniel made sure you forgot.””

I couldn’t move.

“What do you mean?””

Rachel’s voice dropped.

“Claire…”

She paused.

“Ten years ago, before your wedding, something happened.””

My fingers tightened around the letter.

“What happened?””

Rachel whispered:

“You tried to leave Daniel once before.””

I stared at her.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“Why don’t I remember?””

Rachel looked at me with a pain I had never seen before.

“Because that was the first time Daniel took something from you.””

My voice trembled.

“What?””

May you like

She swallowed.

“Your memory.””
