Chapter 6: The Truth My Father Buried

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.

Victoria’s words stayed suspended in the air.

Your father suspected Claire.

Not Arthur.

Not Brooke.

Claire.

My sister.

The person who had sat beside me when my world collapsed.

The person who had told me she was trying to protect me.

I looked across the room at her.

Claire had heard everything.

She didn’t look surprised.

That was the part that hurt most.

Not anger.

Not fear.

Recognition.

“You knew,” I whispered.

Claire’s face tightened.

“Eleanor—”

“You knew Dad suspected you.””

She looked down.

And that was enough.

My heart sank.

“Why?””

Claire closed her eyes.

“Because he told me.””

The room went silent.

Victoria slowly put the phone down.

“Explain.””

Claire looked at both of us.

“I never wanted you to find out this way.””

“That doesn’t answer my question.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

She walked toward the window, wrapping her arms around herself.

“After Dad died, I found out he had been investigating financial activity connected to the family.””

“Connected to you?”” I asked.

Claire shook her head quickly.

“No.””

“Then why were you involved?””

She swallowed.

“Because my name appeared.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“Not because I stole anything.””

“Then why?””

Claire looked at me.

“Because Dad thought someone was using me.””

The answer made no sense.

“Using you for what?””

She didn’t respond immediately.

And that hesitation scared me.

“Claire.””

She turned around.

“Before Dad died, I was struggling.””

“With what?””

“My business.””

I remembered.

Claire’s small design company.

The one she always claimed was doing fine.

The one she stopped talking about whenever I asked.

“I had debt,” she admitted.

“How much?””

“Almost eighty thousand dollars.””

I sat down slowly.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because you had enough going on.””

“That’s not a reason.””

“I was embarrassed.””

Her voice cracked.

“I was your older sister. I was supposed to be the one helping you, not the one needing help.””

I looked away.

Because that sounded like Claire.

Proud.

Stubborn.

Always trying to carry everything alone.

“What happened next?”” Victoria asked.

Claire looked at her.

“Someone paid the debt.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

She looked at me.

“Daniel Mercer.””

The name hit the room like a stone.

Victoria’s expression changed.

“He paid your debt?””

Claire nodded.

“Through a company.””

“The same company connected to Brooke?””

“Yes.””

I felt sick.

“So Dad found out.””

“Yes.””

“And he thought you were involved.””

Claire nodded.

“He thought I had made some kind of agreement.””

“Did you?””

“No.””

The answer came instantly.

Too instantly.

I watched her.

“I need the truth, Claire.””

She looked at me.

“You have it.””

“Everything?””

A painful pause.

“No.””

That one word hurt.

“What else?””

Claire sat down across from me.

“Dad confronted me three weeks before he died.””

The room became quiet.

“What did he say?””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“He asked me if I knew what Arthur and Daniel were planning.””

My heart stopped.

“Arthur?””

“Yes.””

“Why would he ask you?””

“Because Arthur had been asking me questions.””

“What kind of questions?””

Claire looked at the table.

“About you.””

Three weeks before my father died.

The words echoed in my mind.

Three weeks.

While I was planning my wedding.

While I was choosing flowers.

While I was believing I was building a future.

Arthur had been asking my sister questions.

“What did he want to know?”” I asked.

Claire rubbed her hands together.

“He wanted to know if Dad had changed the trust.””

“Changed it how?””

“He asked whether Dad had added protections after the wedding.””

My blood ran cold.

“He knew about the trust.””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“I don’t know.””

Victoria stepped closer.

“Did Arthur ever mention Daniel Mercer?””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

“How?””

“He said Daniel was helping him understand family finances.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Family finances.””

A phrase Arthur loved.

A phrase that suddenly sounded disgusting.

Claire looked at me.

“I should have told you.””

“Yes.””

“I know.””

“Why didn’t you?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because Dad asked me not to.””

I froze.

“What?””

“He told me to wait.””

“Why?””

“Because he wanted proof.””

Victoria frowned.

“Proof of what?””

Claire looked at her.

“That Arthur wasn’t acting alone.””

A few hours later, Victoria arranged a meeting with Daniel Mercer.

I didn’t want to go.

Everything inside me screamed not to trust anyone.

Not Arthur.

Not Brooke.

Not Daniel.

Not even Claire.

But I needed answers.

Too many people had been making decisions around me.

It was time I heard the truth myself.

Daniel’s office was exactly what I expected.

Expensive.

Quiet.

Perfect.

A place designed to make people feel small.

When he entered the conference room, he looked older than I remembered.

His hair was almost completely gray.

His shoulders were tense.

“Eleanor.””

I stared at him.

“You knew.””

His expression changed.

“Knew what?””

“That Arthur was trying to get my inheritance.””

Silence.

Then he sighed.

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

“How long?””

“Before your wedding.””

My hands tightened.

“Before my wedding?””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing?””

“I tried.””

I looked at him.

“You tried?””

“I spoke to your father.””

“And?””

“He told me he wanted to handle it.””

I laughed once.

“Handle it?””

My voice rose.

“He let me marry someone he suspected?””

Daniel looked away.

“Your father believed you needed to discover the truth yourself.””

“That’s not protecting me.””

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“It was his greatest regret.””

That stopped me.

“What?””

Daniel sat down.

“Your father knew Arthur was charming. He knew you loved him. He knew if he accused Arthur without proof, you would defend him.””

I looked down.

Because it was true.

I would have.

I did.

Daniel continued.

“Your father wanted evidence.””

“What evidence?””

He reached into his briefcase.

A small folder.

My heart began racing.

“What is that?””

“The file Brooke stole.””

Victoria immediately stood.

“You still have a copy?””

Daniel nodded.

“Your father insisted there be two.””

He placed it on the table.

I didn’t touch it.

“What’s inside?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Everything.””

The first document was a financial report.

The second was a series of emails.

The third was a photograph.

Arthur.

Brooke.

Daniel.

Together.

Before my wedding.

I stared at it.

“They were working together.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

My hands shook.

“But why?””

“Your inheritance.””

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice was firm.

“It was always the plan.””

I looked up.

“What plan?””

He opened another page.

A legal document.

A marriage agreement.

My name.

Arthur’s name.

But not my signature.

“What is this?””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“An agreement Arthur attempted to create before your wedding.””

I read the first line.

My eyes widened.

“He wanted control of my assets.””

“Yes.””

“And he never told me.””

“No.””

“Then why didn’t you stop him?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“I did.””

I stared.

“What?””

“I told your father.””

“And?””

“Your father removed the possibility.””

“How?””

Daniel pointed to the document.

“Your father added protections to the trust.””

The same protections.

The same clauses.

The ones Arthur was terrified of.

I looked at Claire.

Then Daniel.

Then Victoria.

“So everyone knew.””

Nobody answered.

Because they did.

Everyone knew pieces of the truth.

Everyone except me.

When I left Daniel’s office, I felt numb.

Not broken.

Not anymore.

Something else.

A strange calm.

Because the worst thing about betrayal was uncertainty.

The endless questions.

Was I imagining it?

Was I overreacting?

Was I the problem?

Now I had answers.

Arthur didn’t accidentally become cruel.

He had been building toward something.

Brooke didn’t suddenly become greedy.

She had been planning.

Daniel didn’t accidentally fail me.

He had been protecting evidence.

And Claire…

Claire had been scared.

But she had still hidden the truth.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From Arthur.

I looked at it.

*Please meet me. Alone.*

I almost deleted it.

Then another message appeared.

*I know who is really behind everything.*

I stared.

A third message came.

*It isn’t Brooke.*

My heart slowed.

Because I remembered his fear.

His desperation.

His warning.

*She’s trying to destroy you.*

Then one final message arrived.

*Eleanor, the person who started this was never trying to take your money.*

I looked at the screen.

Waiting.

The next message appeared.

*They wanted your father’s company.*

I froze.

Because my father’s company had been sold after his death.

Or at least…

That was what I believed.

May you like

A final message appeared.

*And your father hid the truth about who really owns it.*
