Chapter 1

My husband slapped me because I said I was not ready to have a baby.
That was the moment I understood he did not want a family.
He wanted control.
We were standing in the kitchen after dinner.
The plates were still in the sink.
The overhead light buzzed softly.
My birth control box was in my hand because I had finally found the courage to say the sentence I had been swallowing for weeks.
“Ryan,” I said carefully, “I think we should wait another year.”
He looked up from his phone.
“For what?”
“A baby.”
The room changed instantly.
His face darkened.
Not disappointment.
Not sadness.
Anger.
I tried to explain.
“I want us to save more money. I want to make sure we’re ready. I’ve been thinking—”
“You’ve been thinking?”
His voice was low.
Dangerous.
“Yes.”
He stepped toward me.
“We already discussed this.”
“No,” I said. “You discussed it. I listened.”
His eyes went cold.
Then he grabbed the birth control box from my hand.
Before I could react, he slammed it onto the floor.
Plastic cracked.
Pills scattered across the tile.
“How dare you?” he shouted.
I froze.
“I decide when we have children.”
Then he slapped me.
Hard.
My head snapped to the side.
My hip hit the counter.
Pain bloomed across my cheek, hot and sharp.
For one second, I heard nothing.
Not the refrigerator.
Not his breathing.
Not my own heartbeat.
Then something inside me stood up.
I straightened slowly.
I looked at my husband.
And I slapped him back.
Harder.
The sound cracked through the kitchen.
Ryan staggered back, stunned.
His hand flew to his face.
“You hit me?”
I turned to the drawer beside the stove.
My fingers shook as I pulled it open.
Inside was the hospital folder I had hidden for two weeks because I did not know how to tell him the truth.
I took it out.
Opened it.
Flipped to the page marked in red.
Then I held it up.
The words were clear.
Severe reproductive complications.
Pregnancy would be life-threatening.
Ryan stared at the page.
His face changed.
Not with concern.
With fear.
Not fear for me.
Fear that he had just exposed himself too soon.
I whispered, “I wasn’t refusing you.”
May you like
My voice broke.
“I was trying to survive.”
