Chapter 9: The Truth Hidden Between Two Betrayals
I stared at Emily’s message.
*“I need to confess.””*
Three words.
Three words that somehow felt heavier than all the documents, photos, and secrets I had uncovered.
Because no matter how many times people betrayed you, the deepest wounds always came from the people you believed would protect you.
My sister.
My husband.
My family.
I called her immediately.
She answered after one ring.
“Margaret.””
Her voice was shaking.
“Where are you?””
“At home.””
“I’m coming.””
There was a pause.
Then:
“Okay.””
I drove through the empty streets without turning on the radio.
I needed silence.
I needed to think.
But my mind wouldn’t stop.
Daniel Lawson’s words repeated over and over.
*Someone in your family.*
Not someone Brandon knew.
Not someone Hannah knew.
Someone who had been close enough to my father to access his business.
Someone who knew his habits.
Someone who knew where he kept documents.
Someone who knew what he trusted.
When I arrived at Emily’s house, she was waiting at the door.
She looked like she hadn’t slept.
“Come in.””
I followed her inside.
The locked box was still sitting on the table.
The same box that had started another nightmare.
Emily sat down.
“I should have told you earlier.””
I remained standing.
“Told me what?””
She looked down.
“Everything.””
I crossed my arms.
“Then start.””
Emily took a deep breath.
“Brandon didn’t just give me money.””
I waited.
“He asked me to help him find something.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
“Documents.””
“What documents?””
“Your father’s old business records.””
I felt my heartbeat increase.
“Why?””
Emily looked at me.
“Because he thought your father’s business wasn’t destroyed by bad management.””
The room went quiet.
“What does that mean?””
Emily swallowed.
“He thought someone stole from him.””
I already knew.
But hearing it from her made it real.
“How long have you known?””
“Months.””
My eyes hardened.
“Months?””
She looked away.
“I’m sorry.””
“That’s not an answer.””
She started crying.
“I found out after Dad died.””
I said nothing.
“Brandon contacted me.””
My anger rose.
“Of course he did.””
“He told me something was wrong.””
“What did he say?””
“He said Dad had been investigating someone before he passed away.””
I looked at the floor.
My father.
Even after everything.
He had been trying to uncover the truth.
“And you helped him?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Emily wiped her face.
“Because I believed him.””
That hurt.
Not because she trusted Brandon.
Because she trusted him while I trusted him too.
“We were all fooled, Margaret.””
I looked at her.
“Were we?””
The question made her freeze.
“Because I’m starting to wonder if everyone knew something except me.””
She shook her head.
“I didn’t know about the money.””
“But you knew he was planning something.””
“Yes.””
“And you still let me believe my marriage was normal.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I was afraid.””
I laughed quietly.
There it was again.
The same word.
“I’m tired of hearing that.””
“I know.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t.””
I walked toward the window.
“Everyone keeps saying they were afraid. But nobody was afraid enough to tell me the truth.””
Emily had no response.
After a moment, she said:
“Brandon wasn’t trying to leave you.””
I turned.
“What?””
“He was trying to protect you.””
I almost laughed.
“Protect me?””
“Yes.””
“By hiding money?””
“By hiding the investigation.””
I stared at her.
“Explain.””
Emily looked at the locked box.
“Brandon believed whoever hurt Dad was still watching.””
I frowned.
“Watching who?””
“You.””
The word made my chest tighten.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Dad left something for you.””
I stepped closer.
“What?””
“I don’t know.””
“Emily.””
“I swear.””
She opened the box again.
The flash drive was still inside.
“I never looked.””
“Why not?””
“Because Brandon told me not to.””
I stared at the flash drive.
Another secret.
Another unanswered question.
“Did he know what was on it?””
Emily shook her head.
“He said he only knew Dad had hidden something.””
I picked up the drive.
“Why didn’t Brandon tell me?””
Emily looked at me sadly.
“Because he thought you were in danger.””
I stared at her.
“And hitting Mom?””
Emily looked down.
“I don’t know.””
Neither did I.
That was the part I couldn’t understand.
Even if Brandon had been trying to uncover the truth…
Even if he had reasons…
Nothing explained that night.
Nothing explained his hand against my mother’s face.
A person could have good intentions and still do terrible things.
I left Emily’s house with the flash drive.
The next morning, Evelyn helped me open it.
We sat in her office.
The screen showed only one folder.
No password.
No protection.
Just one file.
A video.
I clicked play.
My father appeared.
My breath caught.
It was the first time I had seen him in months.
He was sitting in his workshop.
The same workshop where he fixed broken machines.
The same place where I spent my childhood.
His face looked tired.
But his eyes were focused.
“Margaret,” he said.
I covered my mouth.
It was a message.
For me.
“If you are watching this, then I’m gone.””
Tears filled my eyes.
My father continued.
“I wish I could have told you everything myself.””
He looked down briefly.
“Your husband knows part of this.””
I froze.
Evelyn looked at me.
The video continued.
“Brandon came to me because he discovered something was wrong.””
I held my breath.
“He wanted to help.””
My eyes closed.
So Daniel had been right.
Brandon wasn’t the beginning of this.
“Margaret, I know you trust people completely. That is your greatest strength and your greatest weakness.””
I cried silently.
Because my father knew me.
He always knew me.
“There is someone close to us who has been taking advantage of that trust.””
The screen flickered.
Then my father said:
“I don’t know how far this goes.””
He looked directly into the camera.
“But if Brandon is with you when you see this, listen to him.””
I froze.
The video ended.
The room was silent.
Evelyn looked at me.
“Margaret…”
I couldn’t speak.
Because suddenly everything had changed.
Brandon had lied.
He had hidden things.
He had hurt my mother.
But my father’s final message suggested something I never considered.
Maybe Brandon wasn’t the person who started the betrayal.
Maybe he was trying to stop it.
My phone rang.
Brandon.
I looked at the screen.
After everything…
I answered.
“Margaret.””
His voice sounded broken.
“I know you saw the video.””
I didn’t respond.
“How?””
“Emily.””
A pause.
Then:
“I’m sorry.””
The words were unexpected.
Not an excuse.
Not a defense.
Just an apology.
“I should have told you.””
“Yes.””
“I thought I could fix everything before you got hurt.””
“You hurt me anyway.””
“I know.””
I looked down.
At my father’s video still paused on the screen.
“Why didn’t you tell me about Lily?””
Silence.
Then:
“Because I was ashamed.””
“And the money?””
“I was trying to move it somewhere safe.””
“Without telling me?””
“Yes.””
“Do you understand how impossible it is to trust you?””
“Yes.””
For the first time, Brandon didn’t argue.
“I know I lost the right to ask you to believe me.””
I closed my eyes.
“Then why are you calling?””
His voice became quieter.
“Because I found the person who took money from your father.””
I froze.
“What?””
“I know who betrayed him.””
My heart started racing.
“Who?””
Brandon was silent.
Then he said:
“Margaret, you need to leave the city.””
“What?””
“Right now.””
“Why?””
“Because the person who destroyed your father’s business…”
His voice dropped.
“…knows you found out.””
I stood up.
“Who is it?””
The answer came softly.
And when he said the name, my entire body went cold.
Because it wasn’t Emily.
It wasn’t Hannah.
It wasn’t even someone connected to Brandon.
It was someone I had known my entire life.
Someone who had stood beside my family for decades.
Someone my father trusted more than anyone.
May you like
And someone who had just sent me a message five minutes earlier.
*Mom.*
