Chapter 7

The brick was not random.

Detective Monroe confirmed it within hours.

A camera two houses down caught a black SUV slowing near my driveway.

The license plate belonged to a private security company.

One Evelyn had used for years.

By morning, two men were arrested.

One had cash in his glove compartment.

The other had a text from an unknown number.

Scare her. No fire unless she keeps talking.

Evelyn denied everything.

Of course she did.

Richard denied everything too, right up until prosecutors showed him Tiffany’s statement.

She flipped fast.

Faster than I expected.

Tiffany had thought she was the prize.

Then she learned she was another receipt.

Richard had used company money to fund her boutique, but everything was in his control. Her apartment. Her car. Her credit line.

When investigators froze him, her glittering life vanished too.

So she talked.

She gave them messages.

Emails.

Voice notes.

A recording of Richard telling her, “Sarah will take the fall. My mother handled worse with my father.”

That line cracked the case open.

My father’s files became the key.

Richard’s current fraud connected to Evelyn’s older schemes.

Evelyn’s older schemes connected to her late husband’s laundering.

And hidden among those records was a name I had not expected.

Daniel Carter.

My father.

At first, I panicked.

I thought he had been part of it.

Then Mr. Sterling showed me the full file.

My father had been threatened.

His career nearly destroyed.

His health insurance canceled during my mother’s illness.

He had fought them quietly for years.

The house was not just protection.

It was his last testimony.

One afternoon, while sorting copied records, I found a video file labeled Sarah age 12.

I almost didn’t open it.

Then I did.

My father appeared on screen, thinner than I remembered, sitting in the library.

“Hi, sweetheart,” he said.

I pressed my hand over my mouth.

“If you are seeing this, I failed to keep this burden away from you. I am sorry.”

His voice shook.

“I never wanted you near the Hayes family. When you brought Richard home, I hoped I was wrong about blood carrying habits. I wanted you happy more than I wanted to be right.”

Tears slid down my face.

“But I prepared anyway. Not because I doubted you. Because I trusted you would know what to do when the time came.”

The video ended with him looking directly into the camera.

“Do not be quiet, Sarah. Quiet is where people like them grow teeth.”

I cried so hard Nora had to close the laptop.

The next court hearing was different.

Richard entered in handcuffs.

Evelyn sat behind him with a lawyer on each side.

Tiffany sat across the aisle, avoiding my eyes.

The prosecutor laid out the charges.

Assault.

Fraud.

Forgery.

Witness intimidation.

Conspiracy.

Money laundering.

Richard stared at the table.

Evelyn stared at me.

When the judge denied bail for Richard and restricted Evelyn’s assets, her face finally cracked.

Not fully.

But enough.

After court, she passed me in the hallway.

“You could have been part of a powerful family,” she whispered.

I stopped.

May you like

Turned.

“I was,” I said. “His name was Daniel Carter.”
