Chapter 5: The Recording My Grandfather Left Behind

The sound of my grandfather’s voice filled the study.

For a moment, I forgot everything else.

The alarm.

The message on my phone.

Daniel standing a few feet away from me.

The years of lies.

All of it disappeared.

Because my grandfather was speaking.

The man who taught me how to ride a bicycle.

The man who slipped handwritten notes into my lunch when I was a child.

The man who always smelled like cedarwood and old books.

The man I thought I had lost.

“Olivia,” the recording began, his voice calm and steady.

“If you are hearing this, then something has happened that forced you to search for answers.””

My hand covered my mouth.

Thomas watched me carefully.

Daniel looked frozen.

My grandfather continued.

“I need you to listen carefully. Do not trust appearances. Do not trust promises. And most importantly, do not assume that the person closest to you is the person protecting you.””

My eyes moved toward Daniel.

He looked away.

The recording continued.

“Years ago, I discovered that someone inside my organization was attempting to gain access to the Hawthorne assets through deception. I believed I had stopped it.””

A pause.

“But I was wrong.””

The room felt smaller.

The walls felt like they were closing in.

“Olivia, there is something you need to understand about Daniel Hawthorne.””

Daniel’s face tightened.

Thomas reached over and lowered the volume slightly.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“No?””

Thomas shook his head.

“Everyone needs to hear this.””

He turned the volume back up.

My grandfather’s voice continued.

“I do not believe Daniel entered your life by accident.””

The words cut deeper than I expected.

Even though I had suspected it.

Even though I had seen the evidence.

Hearing my grandfather say it made it real.

Daniel finally spoke.

“That’s not fair.””

Nobody looked at him.

He stepped forward.

“My grandfather never knew me.””

Thomas turned sharply.

“Your grandfather?””

Daniel stopped.

A mistake.

A small one.

But everyone heard it.

Thomas stared at him.

“You mean Olivia’s grandfather.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

The recording continued.

“I do not know whether Daniel himself is responsible for the actions taken against my family. That distinction matters.””

I looked up.

My grandfather’s voice softened.

“People are not always responsible for the sins they inherit. But they are responsible for what they choose to do after learning the truth.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

Like those words hurt.

And somehow, that made everything more confusing.

Because if Daniel was only a monster, this would have been easier.

But he wasn’t.

That was the worst part.

He was a person who had done terrible things.

A person I had loved.

A person who had once made me feel safe.

The recording continued.

“If Daniel chose honesty, Olivia, there may still be hope for him.””

A pause.

“But if he chose silence, then you must understand something.””

The entire room waited.

“He was never protecting you.””

My grandfather’s voice became firmer.

“He was protecting himself.””

The recording clicked.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Daniel laughed quietly.

Not because anything was funny.

Because he was breaking.

“You all think you know everything.””

I looked at him.

“Do I not?””

His eyes met mine.

And I saw anger.

Pain.

Regret.

All mixed together.

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You know pieces.””

“Then give me the rest.””

He looked away.

“I can’t.””

That answer was almost worse.

“Why?””

“Because you don’t understand what you’re dealing with.””

I stepped closer.

“Then explain.””

Daniel rubbed his face.

For the first time, he looked exhausted.

Not powerful.

Not confident.

Just tired.

“My father was obsessed with your grandfather.””

Thomas nodded.

“Victor wanted control.””

“Yes.””

Daniel looked at the old photograph on the desk.

“He believed your grandfather stole opportunities from him.””

I frowned.

“My grandfather didn’t steal anything.””

“I know.””

Daniel’s response came quietly.

That surprised me.

“You know?””

He nodded.

“My father was wrong.””

The room went silent.

“Then why?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because by the time I understood that, it was already too late.””

I waited.

He continued.

“My father spent years teaching me one thing.””

His voice lowered.

“Never lose control.””

A bitter smile crossed his face.

“He thought kindness was weakness. Trust was stupidity. Love was just another way someone could manipulate you.””

I looked at him.

“And you became him.””

His expression changed.

The words hurt.

Because he knew they were true.

“No.””

The answer was barely a whisper.

“I tried not to.””

I wanted to believe that.

I hated that I wanted to believe that.

Daniel continued.

“When I met you, I didn’t know who you were at first.””

Thomas watched him closely.

“But then?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Then I found out.””

The honesty was almost painful.

“When I realized you were Olivia Hawthorne, I should have walked away.””

My chest tightened.

“But I didn’t.””

“Why?””

He looked at me.

And there it was.

The answer I had been afraid of.

“Because I thought I could fix everything.””

I stared at him.

“You thought marrying me would fix your father’s mistakes?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

Daniel looked toward the recording device.

“I thought I could take what my father wanted without becoming him.””

The words landed slowly.

Like poison.

“What does that mean?””

He didn’t answer.

Thomas did.

“It means Daniel believed he could access the Hawthorne Trust and somehow convince himself it was different.””

I turned toward Daniel.

“Is that true?””

Daniel said nothing.

That was enough.

I stepped back.

The pain came suddenly.

Not from the slap.

Not from the lies.

From understanding.

I had spent years wondering why Daniel always needed to prove himself.

Why he cared so much about status.

Why he became furious whenever I questioned money.

Because underneath everything, he was still fighting his father’s shadow.

But instead of escaping it…

He followed it.

My phone vibrated again.

Another message.

This time, a photograph.

I opened it.

And my breath stopped.

It was a picture of Daniel.

Taken earlier that night.

Outside the estate.

Talking to someone.

The person’s face was partially visible.

But I recognized the coat.

The posture.

The silver watch.

Victor Hale.

Except that was impossible.

Because Daniel had told me his father was dead.

I looked up.

“Daniel.””

He saw my expression.

“What?””

I turned the phone toward him.

The color disappeared from his face.

Nobody spoke.

Thomas took the phone from my hand.

His eyes narrowed.

“No.””

“What?””

He zoomed in.

Then looked at Daniel.

“Where did you get this?””

“I didn’t.””

“Daniel.””

“I swear.””

Thomas looked back at the image.

“Victor Hale died six years ago.””

My heart pounded.

“Then who is that?””

Nobody answered.

The alarm suddenly stopped.

The silence afterward was worse.

Then every light in the estate went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Someone screamed from the hallway.

A second later, emergency lights flickered on.

Red.

Dim.

Unnatural.

Thomas moved instantly.

“Everyone stay here.””

Daniel grabbed my arm.

I pulled away.

“Don’t touch me.””

His hand dropped.

Then we heard it.

A sound from downstairs.

A door opening.

Slowly.

Someone was inside the house.

Thomas reached for the old security phone.

“No signal.””

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

“They cut the lines.””

I stared at him.

“How do you know that?””

He froze.

Too late.

I saw it.

The realization hit me.

Daniel knew exactly how someone would break into this house.

Because he had planned for it before.

Thomas noticed too.

“Daniel.””

A shadow moved across the hallway.

Everyone became silent.

Then a voice called from downstairs.

A voice I didn’t recognize.

“Olivia Hawthorne.””

My blood turned cold.

The stranger continued.

“You have something that belongs to us.””

Thomas stepped in front of me.

“What do you want?””

The voice laughed.

“We want the same thing your grandfather wanted to hide.””

A pause.

Then:

“The truth about why Olivia’s parents really died.””

I stopped breathing.

My parents.

A subject nobody had mentioned in years.

Daniel looked at me.

And I knew from his face that he knew something.

Something about my family.

Something he had never told me.

The stranger downstairs spoke again.

“Ask your husband.””

The red emergency lights flickered.

“Ask him what happened the night your parents disappeared.””

I turned slowly toward Daniel.

His face was pale.

Because he wasn’t shocked by the accusation.

He was afraid of it.

And that was when I realized the truth.

My grandfather’s warning wasn’t only about the money.

It wasn’t only about the estate.

It was about my entire life.

May you like

And Daniel had been standing beside me for seven years…

Knowing exactly what happened to my family.
