Chapter 6: The Person Who Helped Him Betray Me

I stared across the pool.

The world seemed to narrow until there was nothing left except two faces.

Richard.

And the person standing beside the flower-covered table, pretending they had no idea what I had discovered.

My sister.

Laura.

For a moment, my mind refused to connect the pieces.

Not because it was impossible.

Because it was too painful.

Laura had been there through everything.

When my father died.

When Richard and I struggled during the first years of our marriage.

When I cried in her apartment after arguments with my husband.

She was the person I called when I needed someone to remind me I wasn’t alone.

And now she was in a photograph sitting across from Richard, hidden inside a file my father created because he feared my husband was betraying me.

My hands went cold.

“Evelyn?””

Richard’s voice pulled me back.

I looked at him.

Then at Laura.

Then back at him.

“How long?””

Nobody moved.

Richard’s expression changed.

Not confusion.

Calculation.

“What are you talking about?””

I lifted the phone.

The photograph was still displayed.

“How long have you two been working together?””

Laura’s face drained of color.

The guests looked between us.

Someone whispered her name.

Richard immediately stepped forward.

“Don’t do this.””

I almost smiled.

That was his first instinct.

Not denial.

Not shock.

Control.

“Don’t do what?”” I asked.

“Make accusations you can’t prove.””

I looked down at the photograph.

“I have proof.””

His jaw tightened.

“It’s a picture of me and Laura sitting at a table.””

“Yes.””

“And?””

I stared at him.

“And my father’s investigator labeled that meeting as a financial planning discussion.””

Richard went silent.

That tiny pause.

That hesitation.

Everyone saw it.

Laura finally spoke.

“Evelyn, please.””

Her voice sounded exactly like the voice I remembered.

Gentle.

Comforting.

Familiar.

That made it hurt more.

“Please what?”” I asked.

Her eyes filled slightly.

“Let me explain.””

I looked at her.

“Explain why you met with my husband behind my back?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

I nodded slowly.

“Exactly.””

Richard moved closer to her.

A protective movement.

A husband protecting someone.

Just not me.

That detail didn’t escape anyone.

Marcus looked at Richard.

“Are you seriously standing next to Laura right now?””

Richard ignored him.

“This has gone too far.””

I turned toward him.

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

“This started years ago.””

The wind moved across the pool.

The lights reflected in the water.

Everything looked beautiful.

And everything was ruined.

I looked back at the photograph.

“Daniel, can you hear me?””

“Yes.””

“Tell me what this meeting was about.””

A long silence.

Then Daniel answered.

“Evelyn, the investigator found records showing that Laura provided Richard with information about your father’s estate.””

The guests reacted.

Laura closed her eyes.

Richard looked furious.

“That’s not what happened.””

“Then tell us what happened.””

My voice was directed at Laura.

Not him.

Because somehow, his betrayal hurt less.

I expected betrayal from Richard now.

But Laura?

That was a different wound.

She stepped forward slowly.

“Evelyn…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Don’t start with my name like that.””

She stopped.

Because she knew.

She knew there was no way to soften this.

“You knew.””

Her eyes lowered.

“Knew what?””

“About the inheritance.””

Silence.

“You knew how much my father left me.””

Laura looked away.

That was enough.

I felt something break inside me.

Not loudly.

Quietly.

Like a crack spreading through glass.

“You knew.””

She swallowed.

“Yes.””

The word was barely audible.

But everyone heard it.

“How?””

She looked at Richard.

That was the answer.

He had told her.

“When?”” I asked.

Laura didn’t respond.

“WHEN?””

The sound of my own voice surprised me.

She flinched.

“Two years ago.””

Two years.

I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because the number was impossible.

Two years of secrets.

Two years of conversations I didn’t know about.

Two years of Richard planning.

Two years of my sister knowing.

“Two years ago,” I repeated.

Richard interrupted.

“Laura was trying to help.””

I turned toward him.

“Help who?””

He said nothing.

“Me?””

Silence.

“Or you?””

Still silence.

Laura wiped a tear from her cheek.

“I didn’t know what he was planning.””

I looked at her.

“You met with him privately.””

“Yes.””

“You discussed my father’s estate.””

“Yes.””

“You gave him information.””

She hesitated.

Then:

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt more than another lie would have.

I looked away.

For a moment, I was seventeen again.

Sitting beside my father in his office.

Listening to him tell me to pay attention to the people closest to me.

I thought about how many times I had dismissed his concerns.

How many times I told myself I was lucky.

How many times I defended people who were quietly preparing to hurt me.

Richard stepped toward me.

“Evelyn, listen.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

His face tightened.

“Because there are things you don’t understand.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“There are things I understand perfectly.””

I raised the phone.

“My father spent his final months investigating you.””

His expression changed.

“He was wrong.””

“Was he?””

“Yes.””

“Then why are you scared?””

That stopped him.

Because everyone noticed.

He was scared.

Not angry.

Not offended.

Scared.

I looked around.

The people who came to celebrate our marriage were now witnesses.

And Richard hated that.

He had spent years building an image.

Tonight, I was tearing it down one piece at a time.

Daniel’s voice came through the phone again.

“Evelyn, there is more.””

I closed my eyes.

More.

I didn’t know how much more I could absorb.

“What else?””

“There are emails.””

Richard froze.

I noticed.

“What emails?””

Daniel continued.

“Messages between Richard and Laura discussing how to convince you to transfer control of the inheritance.””

Laura looked at the ground.

I felt my stomach twist.

“Convince me?””

I looked at Richard.

“You weren’t trying to steal it.””

His face remained silent.

“You were trying to make me hand it over willingly.””

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone understood.

That was worse.

A thief breaks a lock.

A manipulator convinces you to open the door.

Richard had spent ten years making me trust him enough to hand him the key.

I turned toward Laura.

“Did you know about Samantha?””

Her face changed.

A small movement.

But enough.

My heart sank.

“You knew.””

She whispered:

“I found out recently.””

“Before today?””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing.””

“I was trying to figure out what to do.””

I stared at her.

“You were trying to figure out what to do?””

“Yes.””

I laughed softly.

“You had one job as my sister.””

Her eyes filled.

“I was scared.””

The words came out quietly.

And for a second, I almost felt sympathy.

Almost.

Then I remembered the morning.

The note.

My shaved head.

The sonogram.

The inheritance.

The years of lies.

“You were scared?””

I stepped closer.

“I woke up with my head shaved by my husband.””

Laura looked horrified.

“I didn’t know he did that.””

“No.””

I nodded.

“You didn’t know because you were too busy protecting him.””

Richard’s expression hardened.

“This is enough.””

I looked at him.

“Are you leaving?””

“No.””

“Because your girlfriend is here?””

His eyes flashed.

“She is not part of this.””

I looked toward Samantha.

She stood silently.

And for the first time all night, she looked less confident.

Less like someone who knew exactly what was happening.

Maybe she had only known one version of Richard too.

The charming one.

The successful one.

The liar.

I looked back at my husband.

“You’re right about one thing.””

He seemed surprised.

“What?””

“This is not just about the affair.””

I held up the phone.

“It’s about everything you built behind my back.””

I looked at Laura.

“Everything both of you built.””

Richard’s face went cold.

“You’re making a mistake.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“My mistake was trusting you.””

I turned away.

The party was over.

Not officially.

But everyone knew.

The celebration had become an investigation.

Then Daniel spoke again.

“Evelyn, there’s one last document.””

I stopped.

“One last?””

“Yes.””

“What is it?””

His voice became quieter.

“The document your father wanted you to see only after you discovered the truth.””

I looked at Richard.

He looked terrified.

“What document?””

I didn’t answer him.

Because for the first time tonight, I wanted him to feel what I had felt.

Uncertainty.

Fear.

The feeling of knowing something was coming and having no way to stop it.

Daniel continued.

“It’s a letter from your father.””

My heart tightened.

“To you.””

I swallowed.

“What does it say?””

A pause.

Then Daniel said:

“Evelyn, your father wrote that if Richard ever betrayed you, you should not try to save the marriage.””

I stared at the phone.

“Why?””

Daniel’s answer was barely above a whisper.

“Because your father believed Richard would try to destroy you once he realized he couldn’t control you.””

The air disappeared from my lungs.

I looked at Richard.

And for the first time, I understood.

The affair.

The money.

The manipulation.

They were not the end of his plan.

They were only the beginning.

Because my father had seen something even I hadn’t.

May you like

Richard wasn’t just planning to leave me.

He was planning to make sure I had nothing left when he did.
