Chapter 9: The Marriage My Father Designed
I stared at the photograph.
Ten years.
That was how long I had looked back at the beginning of my marriage and remembered only one thing.
Chance.
A charity event.
A crowded ballroom.
A man who noticed me standing alone near the balcony.
Eric walking over with a glass of champagne and a smile that made the entire room disappear.
At least, that was the story I had told myself.
Now Charles Whitmore was standing in my basement, telling me the first chapter of my marriage had been written before I even knew Eric’s name.
I looked at him.
“You’re lying.””
Charles didn’t react.
“Am I?””
“Yes.””
“Then ask yourself why your father was there.””
I looked at the photograph again.
My father.
Nathan.
Eric.
All in the same room.
A memory surfaced.
That night.
After I introduced Eric to my father.
My father had smiled.
Not the polite smile he used with strangers.
A real smile.
I remembered being surprised.
Because my father was usually cautious.
Protective.
He had questioned every person I dated before Eric.
But with Eric, he had simply said:
“He seems like a good man.””
At the time, I thought it was because he trusted my judgment.
Now I wondered if there was another reason.
I turned toward Eric.
“Did you know?””
His eyes avoided mine.
That was all the answer I needed.
“Eric.””
He swallowed.
“Not at first.””
“What does that mean?””
“It means I didn’t know your father planned anything.””
“But you knew he wanted us together.””
Silence.
My chest tightened.
“How long?””
Eric looked broken.
“Clara…”
“How long did you know?””
“Before we got married.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
I stepped backward.
Before we got married.
He knew.
He knew my father had been involved.
He knew there was a reason behind our relationship.
And he still stood at the altar.
Still promised forever.
Still watched me believe in a love that had been built on secrets.
“Why?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“I thought I could fix it.””
“Fix what?””
“Everything.””
I laughed quietly.
“You thought you could fix everything by lying to me?””
“No.””
“Then what?””
Eric looked toward the floor.
“My father wanted access to what your father left behind.””
I waited.
“And you?””
“I wanted to stop him.””
The answer surprised me.
For a moment, I didn’t know what to say.
Because I had spent the entire day believing Eric was only a villain.
But the truth was more complicated.
He had betrayed me.
He had helped his family.
He had planned against me.
But maybe he had also been fighting a war I never knew existed.
That didn’t erase what he did.
It just made it harder.
Charles laughed softly.
“Listen to him.””
Eric looked at his father.
“You don’t get to talk.””
“Oh, I do.””
Charles stepped closer.
“You still think you’re the hero.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
Charles looked at me.
“Your husband spent years pretending to protect you while secretly searching for the same thing everyone else wanted.””
Eric’s expression changed.
“That’s not true.””
“Isn’t it?””
Charles pointed at the folders.
“You used your marriage to get close to her.””
Eric’s voice hardened.
“Only because you forced me to.””
The room went silent.
I looked between them.
“You forced him?””
Charles smiled.
“My son was young.””
“I was thirty-two.””
“You were weak.””
Eric’s jaw tightened.
“You threatened Mom.””
I froze.
Charles’s expression changed slightly.
Interesting.
There was another layer.
“What did he threaten?””
Eric didn’t answer.
Charles did.
“Your husband has always been dramatic.””
“Answer me.””
Charles looked at me.
“Eleanor knew too much.””
“And?””
“She wanted out.””
Eric stepped forward.
“Stop.””
But Charles continued.
“She was going to expose everything.””
I looked toward the basement door.
Eleanor.
The woman who had helped plan my financial destruction.
The woman who had known about my father’s death.
But also someone who apparently had once tried to reveal the truth.
“What happened?””
Charles smiled.
“She changed her mind.””
Eric looked disgusted.
“You destroyed her.””
Charles shrugged.
“She chose comfort.””
The basement went quiet.
Everyone had a different version of the truth.
And I was beginning to understand why my father had hidden everything.
Because every person involved had a reason to lie.
I picked up another document from the desk.
A handwritten note.
Not from my father.
From Eric.
I recognized his handwriting immediately.
My hands shook.
“Where did this come from?””
Eric looked at the paper.
His face changed.
“I wrote that years ago.””
I read the first line.
*If anything happens to Clara, I will release everything.*
I looked at him.
“What is this?””
He stepped closer.
“I was trying to protect evidence.””
“You never told me.””
“I couldn’t.””
“You could have.””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then make me understand.””
Eric looked at Charles.
Then at the files.
Then at me.
“My father was watching you before we met.””
I felt cold.
“Why?””
“Because of your father.””
“And you?””
“I found out.””
“When?””
“A year before we met.””
I stared at him.
“So when you approached me…”
“I knew who you were.””
The confession hurt.
Even though I expected it.
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
“And you still made me fall in love with you.””
His eyes closed.
“I did.””
The honesty hurt more than another lie.
Because for once, he wasn’t defending himself.
He was admitting it.
“I hated myself for it.””
I looked away.
“Not enough.””
“No.””
He nodded.
“Not enough.””
That answer was somehow worse.
Nathan’s voice suddenly came through the speaker.
“Clara.””
I looked up.
“What?””
“There’s something Eric hasn’t told you.””
Eric looked toward the speaker.
“Nathan.””
“No more secrets.””
Nathan continued.
“The night your father died, Eric wasn’t just nearby.””
My heart stopped.
I looked at Eric.
“What?””
Eric went still.
Nathan continued.
“He was there.””
I felt the air leave my lungs.
“No.””
Eric whispered,
“Clara…”
“You were there?””
“Yes.””
The word barely came out.
My hands started shaking.
“You told me you weren’t.””
“I said I wasn’t involved.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
He looked destroyed.
“I was there.””
“Why?””
“My father called me.””
“Why?””
“Because he wanted me to convince your father to hand over the files.””
“And did you?””
“No.””
“Then what happened?””
Eric looked at the floor.
“I arrived after the argument.””
“And?””
He swallowed.
“Your father’s car was already damaged.””
The basement went silent.
I felt sick.
“Damaged how?””
“I don’t know.””
“Eric.””
“I swear.””
His eyes met mine.
“I swear I didn’t do it.””
I wanted to believe him.
I hated that.
I hated that some part of me still searched for the truth instead of simply hating him.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because my father threatened you.””
My anger paused.
“What?””
“He told me if I ever revealed what happened, he would destroy everything you had.””
Charles smiled.
“And you believed me.””
Eric looked at him.
“You were capable of it.””
Charles didn’t deny it.
That was the worst part.
I looked at the documents.
At the years of lies.
At the family that had entered my life and turned it into a battlefield.
Then I noticed something.
A small envelope beneath the photograph.
I picked it up.
My father’s handwriting.
Again.
But this time, the words on the front made my heart stop.
*For Clara. Open only when Eric tells you the truth.*
I looked at Eric.
“You knew about this?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
I opened it.
Inside was one page.
Only one.
My father’s words.
*Clara,*
*If you are reading this, then Eric finally chose honesty over fear. That means there may still be hope.*
I looked at Eric.
My father had known.
He had expected this moment.
I continued.
*The person who can save you is not the person who never lied. That person does not exist. The person who can save you is the person willing to lose everything to tell you the truth.*
My breathing slowed.
Then I reached the final paragraph.
*The final evidence is not hidden in this house. It is hidden with the person I trusted most after your mother died.*
I froze.
My mother.
My father’s closest friend.
Someone I never suspected.
Then I read the name.
And the entire room changed.
*Evelyn Carter.*
I looked up.
Impossible.
Evelyn.
The woman who helped me.
The woman who brought me here.
The woman who claimed she wanted the truth.
My phone suddenly rang.
The screen showed her name.
Evelyn.
Nobody spoke.
Then Nathan whispered:
“Answer it.””
I slowly pressed accept.
“Evelyn?””
Her voice came through.
Quiet.
Broken.
“Clara…”
I gripped the phone.
“What did you hide from me?””
A long silence.
Then she said the words I never expected.
“I was the one who found your father after the accident.””
My heart stopped.
“And I was the one who helped him hide the evidence.””
The basement went completely silent.
Then Evelyn whispered:
“But I never told you the most important part.””
“What?””
Her voice trembled.
“Your father wasn’t trying to expose Charles Whitmore.””
I waited.
“He was trying to expose someone much closer.””
My blood turned cold.
“Who?””
A pause.
Then:
May you like
“Your husband’s mother.””
The call ended.
