Chapter 3: The House Was Never His

For several minutes, I simply stared at Madison's name.
She was trying to buy my house.
Not a house.
My house.
The one where Daniel and I had celebrated our first Christmas.
The one where I had spent three months choosing every piece of furniture.
The one where he had once stood in the kitchen, holding my face between his hands, promising we would grow old together.
Now he was planning to transfer it to his mistress.
At a price that would have cost me hundreds of thousands of dollars.
I called Robert.
"Tell me exactly what I'm looking at.""
He answered from his office.
"The proposed buyer submitted an offer through a private holding company. The beneficial owner appears to be Madison.""
"How did she get access to the property information?""
"Possibly through Daniel. We are checking whether she received any documents from the previous property filing.""
"Can she buy it?""
"Not without your consent.""
I exhaled.
"Then she isn't buying anything.""
"That's what I wanted to hear.""
I looked at the document again.
The offer included a clause requiring vacant possession within thirty days.
They weren't just planning to steal my house.
They were planning to remove me from it.
I wondered how long Daniel had been preparing for this.
Had he stood beside me at the Christmas tree while discussing my eviction with his mother?
Had he kissed me goodnight after sending money to Madison?
Had he looked into my eyes the morning he supposedly left for London, knowing he would never return as my husband?
My phone rang.
It was my company's chief financial officer, Thomas.
I answered.
"Claire, thank God. I've been trying to reach you.""
"What happened?""
"There's a problem with the company accounts.""
"What kind of problem?""
He hesitated.
"Some transactions have been flagged. The reserve account is restricted pending review.""
"Who authorized the transfers to Reed Lifestyle Consulting?""
Silence.
"Thomas?""
"I thought you knew.""
My grip tightened.
"Knew what?""
"Daniel said you had approved a private investment arrangement. He said it was part of a restructuring plan.""
I closed my eyes.
"Did I sign anything?""
"There's a digital approval under your name.""
"I didn't authorize it.""
Thomas went quiet.
"Claire, that's serious.""
"Yes. It is.""
"Madison told me everything was approved.""
I sat forward.
"Madison told you?""
"She said she was coordinating the investment with Daniel.""
I took a breath.
"Thomas, I want every record preserved. Every email, every approval, every message. Nobody deletes anything.""
"Understood.""
"And Thomas?""
"Yes?""
"Do not discuss this with Daniel or Madison.""
"Of course.""
I ended the call.
Then I looked at Robert.
"I want to know who helped them.""
He nodded.
"That is exactly what we're going to find out.""
By late afternoon, I was back at my office.
I had decided I would not hide from the situation.
The moment I walked through the glass doors, employees began looking up from their desks.
Some smiled.
Others whispered.
Then I saw Madison's empty workstation.
Her personal photographs were gone.
So was her laptop.
She had clearly known the investigation was coming.
My executive assistant, Rachel, hurried toward me.
"Claire, can I speak with you?""
"Of course.""
She followed me into my office and closed the door.
Her face was pale.
"I don't know how to say this.""
"Just say it.""
Rachel placed a folder on my desk.
"Madison came in last Thursday. She asked for copies of the company's insurance documents and your personal property schedule.""
I stared at her.
"Why?""
"She said Daniel needed them for a family financial assessment.""
"Did you give them to her?""
"No. I told her she needed written authorization.""
Rachel swallowed.
"Then she said you had already approved everything.""
I opened the folder.
Inside were copies of documents relating to my house, vehicles, investment accounts, and business assets.
There was even a list of the valuables kept in my bedroom.
My jewelry.
My watches.
My personal safe.
I looked at Rachel.
"Who gave her these?""
"Someone in finance.""
"Who?""
Rachel hesitated.
"Thomas.""
I felt the room become very quiet.
Thomas.
The same man who had just claimed he knew nothing.
"Did you tell anyone about the documents?""
"No. I thought it was strange, but Madison said she was handling a confidential matter for you.""
I closed the folder.
"Thank you for bringing this to me.""
Rachel looked frightened.
"Claire, is the company in trouble?""
I stood up and walked around my desk.
"The company is going to be fine.""
"Are you sure?""
"Absolutely.""
I looked directly at her.
"Some people have confused my kindness with a lack of intelligence. That mistake ends today.""
At 5:30 p.m., Robert called.
"We've identified the company involved in the property offer.""
"Who owns it?""
"Madison and Eleanor appear to be associated with it. But there's another name on the registration.""
"Daniel?""
"No.""
I frowned.
"Then who?""
Robert paused.
"Your chief financial officer. Thomas Walker.""
I sat down.
For a moment, I couldn't speak.
Thomas had worked for me for six years.
I had trusted him with payroll, taxes, investments, and confidential financial information.
He had attended my birthday dinners.
He had congratulated me when I won industry awards.
And he had apparently been helping my husband prepare to take my house.
"How much money did he receive?"" I asked.
"We're still tracing the transfers, but his company received payments from the same network that funded Madison's business.""
I looked at the glass wall of my office.
Outside, employees were preparing to leave.
They had no idea what was happening behind the scenes.
"Robert, I want him removed from financial access immediately.""
"We can arrange an emergency board meeting.""
"Do it.""
"Claire, there is one more issue.""
I closed my eyes.
"What now?""
"The property documents include a statement suggesting that Daniel has been paying household expenses from his own funds for several years.""
"That's a lie.""
"Yes. But it appears someone has been collecting receipts and creating a paper trail to support that claim.""
I looked at the documents on my desk.
Then I remembered something.
The housekeeper.
Maria had worked for us for nearly six years.
She knew exactly who paid the bills, who arranged the repairs, and who was home during the day.
If Daniel had been collecting receipts, Maria might have seen something.
I called her.
She answered after two rings.
"Mrs. Bennett?""
"Maria, I need to ask you something. Have you seen Daniel moving documents around the house?""
There was a pause.
Then she whispered:
"Yes, ma'am.""
My heart began beating faster.
"When?""
"Several times. He went into your study when you were away. He also asked me not to tell you.""
"What was he doing?""
"He was photographing papers. And one day, he asked me to put some old bank statements in a box.""
"Did you?""
"No, ma'am. I thought it was strange.""
I leaned forward.
"Where are those statements?""
Maria's voice dropped.
"In the locked cabinet behind the books in your study.""
I looked at Robert.
He was already writing something down.
"Maria, don't touch anything. We'll arrange to collect the documents properly.""
"There's something else, Mrs. Bennett.""
"What?""
"Last month, Daniel brought a woman to the house.""
"Madison?""
"Yes.""
I closed my eyes.
"Did they come during the day?""
"Late at night. I was finishing the laundry. They thought everyone had gone.""
"What happened?""
Maria hesitated.
"They were arguing.""
"About what?""
"Your house.""
I felt my fingers tighten around the phone.
"Tell me exactly what you heard.""
Maria took a breath.
"Madison said she didn't want to wait any longer. She said the baby needed a proper home and that Daniel had promised everything would be settled before the wedding.""
My stomach turned.
"And Daniel?""
"He told her not to worry. He said his mother had already arranged the paperwork.""
"What paperwork?""
"I don't know, ma'am. But Madison said something about the house belonging to the baby.""
I looked at Robert.
His expression had become grim.
Then Maria said something that made the blood drain from my face.
"Daniel also told her that you would never fight him.""
I swallowed.
"Why?""
"Because he said you loved him too much to make him look bad.""
I ended the call.
For a long time, I sat without moving.
Then I opened my email and found the message Daniel had sent me three weeks earlier.
I can't wait to come home, sweetheart. We need to start thinking about our future.
I had replied with a photograph of the house.
He had responded with a heart.
I wondered whether he had been laughing when he sent it.
At 7:10 p.m., Robert arrived with an investigator.
They had secured copies of the relevant property documents and were preparing formal notices regarding the disputed claims.
Robert placed a new folder on my desk.
"We also found something in the wedding expenses.""
I opened it.
There were invoices for the venue, catering, flowers, and honeymoon.
One payment stood out.
A deposit of $42,000 had been transferred to a luxury villa in the Caribbean.
The booking was for two adults.
Daniel Bennett.
Madison Reed.
Arrival: Wednesday.
Departure: the following Monday.
I stared at the dates.
They were currently on their honeymoon.
Robert tapped another page.
"Look at the payment authorization.""
I did.
The transaction had been approved using a digital certificate linked to my personal business account.
But there was a problem.
The authorization had been created from a device registered to Madison.
"She used my credentials?""
"That's what the preliminary records suggest. We need a full forensic review.""
I looked up.
"Can we recover the money?""
"Potentially. We will pursue the appropriate claims.""
I nodded.
"Then do it.""
Robert gathered the documents.
"Now, about the house.""
I stood and walked toward the window.
The city lights had begun to appear.
"Sell it.""
"Claire, are you certain?""
"Yes.""
"We can arrange a legitimate sale, but we need to ensure there are no unresolved restrictions or competing claims. The disputed filing needs to be addressed first.""
"Then address it.""
"Do you want to sell below market value?""
I thought about Daniel's photographs.
His mother's caption.
Madison's hand on her stomach.
The relatives who had smiled while I unknowingly paid for their celebration.
"No," I said.
"Good.""
"I want a clean transaction. I want the house sold to someone who has nothing to do with them.""
Robert nodded.
"That's sensible.""
"And I want every legally permissible arrangement connected to Daniel's access to my assets terminated.""
"We'll review the marriage agreement and the relevant contracts. I won't promise an outcome until we've checked every provision.""
"Understood.""
Then Robert opened the final folder.
"There is one more thing I found in the financial records.""
I looked at him.
"What?""
He placed a printed photograph on my desk.
It showed Daniel standing outside a bank with Eleanor.
They were holding a large envelope.
The date was four days before the wedding.
On the back, someone had written a note.
Final documents. Transfer after honeymoon.
I turned the photograph over.
"Transfer what?""
Robert looked at me.
"That's what we're trying to establish.""
He handed me another page.
It was a copy of a document signed by Daniel, Eleanor, and Thomas.
The heading read:
BENNETT FAMILY PROPERTY AND ASSET TRANSFER AGREEMENT.
My name appeared throughout the document.
My signature appeared at the bottom.
But I had never signed it.
I stared at the signature.
It was almost perfect.
Almost.
Then I noticed the date.
The document had been signed two days after Daniel supposedly left for London.
And beneath my forged signature was a clause that made my hands tremble.
It stated that, upon the successful completion of the transfer, Daniel would receive full control of the Westchester property and several associated investment assets.
The intended beneficiary was not Daniel.
It was an entity registered in Madison's name.
I looked at Robert.
"How much were they trying to take?""
He didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he turned to the last page.
There, in black ink, was the total estimated value of the assets listed for transfer.
$4.8 MILLION.
I slowly sat down.
My husband hadn't simply married his mistress.
He had been preparing to steal the life I had built.
And now I understood why Eleanor had been so confident when she called me incomplete.
She thought I was already defeated.
I looked at Robert.
"How long until the house can legally be sold?""
"If we move quickly and resolve the title issue, we can proceed. But I need you to understand that the forged document and financial transfers require a separate investigation.""
"Then investigate.""
Robert closed the folder.
"Claire, what are you planning to do when Daniel returns?""
I looked at the wedding photograph still open on my laptop.
Daniel was smiling.
Madison was holding his hand.
Eleanor stood behind them, looking triumphant.
I finally smiled.
"I'm going to let him come home.""
Robert raised an eyebrow.
"Why?""
"Because I want him to discover the truth himself.""
I picked up my phone and opened Daniel's contact.
For the first time since the wedding, I sent him a message.
I hope you're enjoying your honeymoon. We need to discuss the house when you return.
His reply arrived less than a minute later.
Of course, sweetheart. I've got some wonderful news about our future.
I stared at those words.
Then another message appeared.
Mom says everything is finally arranged. Madison and I are excited to start our new life in your house.
I read it twice.
Then I placed the phone on the desk and looked at Robert.
"Don't tell him anything.""
Robert nodded.
I had no intention of ruining their honeymoon.
I wanted them rested.
Happy.
Completely unaware.
Because when Daniel, Madison, and Eleanor returned, they would discover that the woman they had called useless had already found the one thing they had forgotten to consider.
The house was never his.
And neither was the money.
But the next morning, Robert called me with news that changed the entire situation.
The forged property agreement had been submitted to a bank.
And the bank had already approved a loan against my house.
May you like
The loan amount?
*Two million dollars.*
