Chapter 6: The Man Behind Daniel’s Face

For three seconds, my mind refused to understand what I was seeing.

A person.

Standing behind my father.

Wearing Daniel's face.

Not literally.

Not like some impossible nightmare.

But close enough that my body reacted before my brain could catch up.

The same height.

The same dark hair.

The same sharp jawline.

The same expensive suit Daniel always wore when he went to business meetings.

But something was wrong.

Something deeply wrong.

Because Daniel's eyes were never like that.

My husband looked at people like he was trying to understand them.

This man looked at people like he was calculating them.

Thomas saw him too.

And the expression on my father's face changed instantly.

Fear.

Not surprise.

Not confusion.

Fear.

“Claire,” Thomas said quietly.

“Do not move.””

The man behind him smiled.

A slow, controlled smile.

Then he stepped forward.

“Still giving orders after all these years, Thomas?””

My father's hands tightened.

“Stay away from my daughter.””

The stranger laughed softly.

The sound made my stomach twist.

Because it sounded exactly like Daniel when he was amused.

But there was no warmth in it.

No affection.

Only cruelty.

I stepped backward.

“Who are you?””

The man looked at me.

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then he tilted his head.

“You really don't know.””

My heart pounded.

“Tell me.””

Thomas moved between us.

“Claire, go upstairs.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“Go upstairs. Lock yourself in your room.””

The stranger smiled wider.

“Still protecting her.””

Thomas didn't look away.

“Claire, now.””

I didn't move.

Because I was tired.

Tired of being protected.

Tired of being lied to.

Tired of everyone deciding what I could handle.

“No.””

Both men looked at me.

I held the photograph in my hand.

“I want answers.””

Thomas opened his mouth.

The stranger spoke first.

“That was always your problem, Claire.””

I froze.

“What?””

“You ask questions.””

His voice was almost gentle.

“Your mother hated that about you.””

My chest tightened.

“Don't talk about my mother.””

“Why not?””

He took another step.

“She spent years trying to keep you away from the truth.””

“Who are you?””

The stranger glanced at Thomas.

Then back at me.

“My name is Adrian.””

The name meant nothing.

But the way Thomas reacted told me everything.

He knew him.

“You died,” Thomas said.

Adrian smiled.

“So did you.””

The hallway went cold.

I looked between them.

“What is happening?””

Neither answered.

I gripped the staircase railing.

“Someone explain.””

Thomas finally looked at me.

And for the first time since I saw him alive, he looked like my father.

Not a mysterious stranger.

Not a man from a secret past.

My father.

The person who used to carry me on his shoulders.

The person who taught me how to ride a bike.

The person who promised me monsters weren't real.

“Claire,” he said quietly.

“Your father didn't die eight years ago because of an accident.””

I swallowed.

“Then what happened?””

Thomas looked at Adrian.

“Someone tried to erase him.””

Adrian shrugged.

“Someone had to clean up your family's mistakes.””

“My family's?””

My voice rose.

“What does that mean?””

Adrian looked around the house.

The house Daniel and I built.

The house where I thought I was safe.

“You really never knew anything, did you?””

I didn't answer.

Because the answer was obvious.

“No,” Adrian continued.

“Your mother made sure of that.””

Thomas stepped forward.

“Don't listen to him.””

“Why?””

I looked at my father.

“Because everyone else has been telling me what not to believe.””

My voice cracked.

“I want to hear everything.””

Thomas looked devastated.

For a moment, he looked like a man who had been waiting years for this conversation and still wasn't ready.

“Your father and I were partners.””

Adrian corrected him.

“Friends.””

Thomas's jaw tightened.

“Business partners.””

I looked at Adrian.

“You knew my family?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

He smiled.

“Because before Daniel became your husband, he was my employee.””

The words hit me.

I felt dizzy.

“No.””

Thomas looked at me.

“Claire—”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Daniel worked for him?””

Adrian laughed quietly.

“Worked for me?””

He looked almost offended.

“That's a simple way to describe it.””

My heart raced.

“What does that mean?””

Adrian walked toward the living room.

Like this was his house.

Like he belonged here.

“He was trained by me.””

The sentence made my skin crawl.

“Trained?””

Thomas's voice hardened.

“Adrian.””

But Adrian ignored him.

“Your husband was very good at becoming whoever people needed him to be.””

My stomach twisted.

“You're lying.””

“Am I?””

He looked at me.

“Ask yourself something.””

I said nothing.

“When did Daniel first meet your mother?””

I opened my mouth.

Then stopped.

I knew the answer.

Or I thought I did.

“He met her after we started dating.””

Adrian smiled.

“That's what you were told.””

A silence followed.

Thomas looked away.

And that hurt more than anything.

Because my father avoiding my eyes confirmed the truth.

I whispered:

“When?””

Thomas finally answered.

“Three months before your first date.””

The room spun.

Three months.

Daniel knew my mother before he knew me.

Again.

Another piece of my life that wasn't what I thought.

“Why?””

Thomas looked at the floor.

“Because your mother hired him.””

I laughed softly.

A broken sound.

“My mother hired my future husband?””

“She didn't know he would become your husband.””

Adrian's voice cut in.

“She hired him to watch you.””

I turned toward him.

“Watch me?””

“Yes.””

The word felt disgusting.

“Why?””

Nobody answered.

And that silence was the answer.

I looked at Thomas.

“Why did she need someone to watch me?””

My father closed his eyes.

“Because of what you inherited.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Your father left you something.””

I looked toward the office.

The safe.

The envelope.

The hidden documents.

“The will?””

“No.””

Thomas shook his head.

“Something bigger.””

Adrian smiled.

“There it is.””

“What?””

“The moment she realizes she isn't the victim.””

My anger turned toward him.

“What are you talking about?””

Adrian walked closer.

“You believe Daniel abandoned you tonight.””

He pointed upstairs.

“You believe I am the threat.””

Then he pointed toward Thomas.

“You believe he is your father coming back to save you.””

His smile disappeared.

“But you don't know the truth.””

I stared at him.

“What truth?””

Adrian reached into his coat.

Thomas immediately moved.

“Don't.””

Adrian ignored him.

He pulled out a small envelope.

Not blue.

Not cream.

Black.

My blood ran cold.

Because I knew exactly what it was.

The missing folder Daniel mentioned.

“You're looking for this,” Adrian said.

I couldn't breathe.

“My mother's document.””

“Yes.””

“Why do you have it?””

He looked at Thomas.

Then at me.

“Because your mother trusted the wrong person.””

My phone suddenly vibrated.

Everyone looked at it.

The screen lit up.

A message.

From Daniel.

I stared at the name.

Alive.

Real.

My husband.

The person who had supposedly left me.

The person who was supposedly protecting me.

I opened it.

Only one sentence.

“Claire, whatever Adrian tells you, do not believe him.””

I looked up.

Adrian was watching me.

Almost amused.

Then another message arrived.

From Daniel.

This one had an attachment.

A photograph.

I opened it.

And my blood froze.

The image showed Adrian.

Not today.

Not years ago.

Tonight.

Standing outside my house.

But the timestamp was impossible.

It was taken twenty minutes before Daniel packed his suitcases.

Before he walked away.

Before I knew any of this existed.

Under the photo was a message.

“Claire, he was already inside our house before I left.””

I looked at Adrian.

Then Thomas.

Then the phone.

My entire body went cold.

Because suddenly, I understood something.

Daniel didn't leave me.

He was running.

And whoever Adrian was...

He wasn't here for the document.

He was here because he already knew where the real secret was.

Inside me.

And then Adrian spoke.

“Claire.””

His eyes locked onto mine.

“Your husband finally told you something true.””

He smiled.

“But he still hasn't told you the part that matters.””

I couldn't move.

“What part?””

Adrian stepped closer.

“The reason your mother needed Daniel to watch you…”

He paused.

“Was because she believed you were the one person capable of destroying everything she built.””

The lights flickered again.

And from the second floor came a sound.

A drawer opening.

Someone else was upstairs.

Searching.

Thomas looked toward the hallway.

His face changed.

Because he recognized the sound.

“She's here.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

My father whispered the name.

A name I never expected to hear.

May you like

A name that belonged to the last person I thought could be part of this.

“Your mother.””
