Chapter 5: The Family Member Who Wanted Me Gone

The name at the bottom of the shareholder list felt like a betrayal far deeper than anything Daniel had done.

Because Daniel was a stranger I had once loved.

But this person was family.

*Ethan Harlow.*

My cousin.

My grandfather’s favorite grandson.

The man who had sat beside me at family dinners.

The man who held my hand at my grandfather’s funeral and promised me, “No matter what happens, we protect this family together.””

Apparently, he had meant something very different.

Richard looked at me carefully.

“Claire?””

I didn’t answer.

I couldn’t.

My mind was racing through memories.

Ethan helping me carry boxes after Grandpa died.

Ethan telling me I deserved the trust because I had spent years caring for the old man while everyone else was busy.

Ethan defending me when distant relatives complained that I had been chosen instead of him.

All those moments.

All those words.

Were they real?

Or had I simply been too naive to see what was happening?

Daniel noticed my reaction.

And slowly, his confidence returned.

“You know him.””

I looked at him.

“Yes.””

“Who is he?””

I didn’t answer immediately.

Because saying the name out loud made it real.

“Ethan Harlow.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

“You know Ethan?””

That question stopped me.

“You do?””

A flicker of panic crossed his face.

Too quick for most people to notice.

Not for me.

“Everyone in business knows each other.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You know Ethan.””

Daniel looked away.

Richard noticed too.

“Mr. Mercer.””

Daniel sighed.

“This isn’t what you think.””

I almost smiled.

That sentence should have been printed on his business cards.

Every secret person had the same response.

“This isn’t what you think.””

“Then tell me what it is,” I said.

He remained quiet.

Richard’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

Then his expression became serious.

“I need to take this.””

He stepped outside.

Leaving Daniel, Vanessa, and me alone.

The silence was unbearable.

Vanessa looked between us.

“Daniel, what’s happening?””

He didn’t answer.

“Daniel.””

His jaw tightened.

“Not now, Vanessa.””

She stared at him.

For the first time, she wasn’t looking at him like a powerful executive.

She was looking at him like a man who might no longer be useful.

That realization seemed to hurt him.

“Interesting,” I said.

Daniel turned.

“What?””

“You two looked so certain an hour ago.””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“Claire—”

“No.””

I looked at her.

“Don’t.””

She stopped.

“You don’t get to pretend you’re innocent.””

Her lips parted.

“I didn’t know about this.””

I laughed softly.

“About which part?””

She said nothing.

“The affair?””

Her eyes lowered.

“The documents?””

Silence.

“The plan to replace me?””

Daniel immediately reacted.

“There was no plan.””

I looked at him.

“Wasn’t there?””

The room went quiet again.

Because the truth was sitting there between us.

Vanessa had not just appeared at the gala by accident.

She had chosen that night.

The night Daniel received his promotion.

The night every important person in the company was present.

The night humiliating me would send the loudest possible message.

Daniel had wanted an audience.

He wanted everyone to see him leave behind the “small-town wife” and step into the world he believed he deserved.

But he had forgotten one thing.

The audience was also watching.

And they remembered.

The conference room door opened.

Richard returned.

His expression was different.

Not angry.

Concerned.

“Claire.””

I immediately knew something was wrong.

“What happened?””

Richard looked at Daniel.

“Ethan Harlow has requested an emergency shareholder meeting.””

Daniel smiled.

“Good.””

Richard ignored him.

“The meeting is scheduled for tomorrow morning.””

I looked at Richard.

“And the purpose?””

Richard hesitated.

Then said:

“Removal of your authority as controlling trustee.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.

Because this was never about Daniel.

Not completely.

Daniel had been a piece on the board.

A distraction.

A weapon.

Ethan knew exactly what would happen.

He knew Daniel’s ego.

He knew Daniel would expose himself.

He knew I would have no choice but to reveal my position.

And now that everyone knew who I was, Ethan was moving.

Daniel had not destroyed me.

He had revealed me.

I walked to the window.

Outside, the city continued moving.

Cars passed.

People walked.

Nobody knew that my entire family legacy was being challenged inside a conference room.

“Why now?”” I asked.

Richard was quiet.

“Because you’re vulnerable.””

I turned.

“What?””

“You have spent years refusing to use your influence.””

He paused.

“Some people mistake kindness for weakness.””

I looked down.

That sentence sounded painfully familiar.

Daniel had said almost the same thing without realizing it.

Richard continued.

“Ethan has been building support quietly for years.””

“How?””

“By convincing shareholders that Harlow Capital needs someone more aggressive.””

I almost laughed.

Aggressive.

That was always the word people used when they wanted to justify cruelty.

“What does he want?””

Richard looked at me.

“The trust.””

Of course.

Everything came back to the same thing.

Money.

Power.

Control.

The things I had spent my life trying to avoid.

Daniel entered the conversation.

“So what happens?””

Everyone looked at him.

He straightened.

“If Ethan takes control, what happens to me?””

The question was so revealing that even Vanessa looked at him strangely.

Not:

What happens to Claire?

Not:

Is she okay?

Only:

What happens to me?

I stared at him.

And somehow, that hurt more than the affair.

Richard answered.

“That depends on the board.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

Then looked at me.

“Claire.””

I didn’t respond.

“You need me.””

I almost turned around to make sure I heard correctly.

“Excuse me?””

“You need allies.””

He stepped closer.

“Ethan is trying to take your company.””

I looked at him.

“My company?””

He stopped.

“Yes.””

I smiled sadly.

“Funny.””

“What?””

“For six years, you told everyone my success came from marrying you.””

His face tightened.

“And now you need my company to save yourself.””

Daniel looked frustrated.

“This isn’t about me.””

“No?””

I pointed toward the door.

“Because five minutes ago, you asked what would happen to your position.””

He had no answer.

Vanessa quietly gathered her purse.

Daniel noticed.

“Where are you going?””

She looked at him.

“I think I should leave.””

“Vanessa—”

“No.””

Her voice was calm.

“I think I’ve already caused enough damage.””

The irony almost made me laugh.

She wasn’t leaving because she regretted what happened.

She was leaving because she realized Daniel might no longer be powerful.

She walked past me.

At the door, she stopped.

“Claire.””

I looked at her.

She hesitated.

Then said:

“There’s something you should know.””

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“Vanessa.””

She ignored him.

“Ethan wasn’t the one who introduced us.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

She looked at Daniel.

Then back at me.

“Daniel was already talking about you before I ever met him.””

I felt the room become colder.

“What are you saying?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“He knew about Harlow Capital before your first date.””

Daniel’s face went pale.

“Stop.””

But she continued.

“He told me you were the key to everything.””

I stared at Daniel.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Vanessa looked away.

“He said once he married you, he would finally have access to the world he deserved.””

The words cut deeper than the champagne ever could.

Because suddenly, every strange moment made sense.

The questions about my grandfather.

The interest in family connections.

The way Daniel pushed me to attend certain events.

The way he always wanted to know who I met.

Who I spoke to.

Who had influence.

I had thought he was building a life with me.

He had been studying a business opportunity.

Richard quietly said:

“Claire…”

But I couldn’t hear him.

I looked at Daniel.

“Was any of it real?””

For the first time that night, Daniel looked completely broken.

“Claire, listen—”

“Was any of it real?””

He didn’t answer.

And that silence was the final answer.

I picked up my phone.

There was one unread message waiting.

The same unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence appeared.

*If you want to know how deep Daniel’s betrayal goes, look at the first contract he signed after meeting you.*

Below it was another attachment.

A scanned document.

A signature.

A date.

And a name.

I opened it.

My hands went cold.

Because the contract wasn’t between Daniel and Westbridge.

It wasn’t between Daniel and Ethan.

It was between Daniel…

and my grandfather.

Signed months before my grandfather died.

May you like

Which meant Daniel had been connected to my family long before he ever said, “I love you.””

And the person who arranged that meeting was someone I had trusted my entire life.
