Chapter 1

My husband destroyed our anniversary cake because I invited my mother to dinner.

That was the night I finally stopped pretending his cruelty was just stress.

The cake hit the floor with a soft, sickening crash.

Vanilla sponge.

White frosting.

Sugared roses.

Five years of marriage splattered across the dining room tile.

I had saved for three months to buy it from the bakery he always said was “too expensive for ordinary days.”

But our fifth anniversary was not supposed to be ordinary.

At least, not to me.

I had set the table with the good plates.

Lit candles.

Cooked his favorite roast chicken.

Worn the blue dress he once said made me look like the woman he fell in love with.

And I invited my mother.

My mother, Ruth, who had raised me alone after my father left.

My mother, who worked double shifts so I could finish school.

My mother, who never once asked for repayment.

She arrived quietly with a small wrapped gift in both hands.

“Happy anniversary,” she said softly.

My husband, Victor, did not smile.

His face went cold the second he saw her.

“I didn’t invite her.”

I tried to laugh it off.

“It’s just dinner. She won’t stay long.”

“This is our night.”

“She’s my mother.”

His eyes narrowed.

“And this is my house.”

That sentence should have warned me.

But I reached for the cake knife anyway.

I wanted peace so badly I kept offering pieces of myself to buy it.

Then Victor stepped forward.

With one sweep of his arm, he knocked the entire cake onto the floor.

My mother flinched like he had struck her.

“Get her out,” he roared.

“Get her out of this house now.”

Something inside me snapped.

I slapped him.

Hard.

The sound cut through his shouting.

Victor stared at me, shocked.

I took my mother’s hand and pulled her beside me.

“She is my mother,” I said.

“And she has something you need to see.”

My mother’s hands trembled as she pulled out her phone.

She pressed play.

Victor’s face appeared on the screen.

He was standing in my mother’s kitchen.

Holding a thick envelope of cash.

“Five thousand dollars,” he said in the video.

“And if you tell anyone I borrowed this, I will make sure you regret it.”

The dining room went silent.

May you like

Victor’s face drained of color.

And for the first time that night, he looked afraid.
