Chapter 6: The Betrayal Before I Was Born

The name at the bottom of my grandfather’s letter stayed in my mind.

I read it again.

Then again.

*Eleanor Voss.*

Beneath the name, my grandfather had written one sentence.

The person who destroyed our family was closer than anyone imagined.

I looked up.

Nobody in the ballroom moved.

Not my father.

Not my mother.

Not Michael.

Not Luca.

Everyone reacted differently when they saw the name.

And that told me everything.

“You know her,” I said.

My voice was quiet.

But everyone heard it.

My father looked away.

My mother’s face turned pale.

Chloe frowned.

“Who is Eleanor Voss?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at Luca.

He took a slow breath.

“Eleanor Voss was your grandfather’s business partner.””

My stomach tightened.

“Business partner?””

He nodded.

“Before Sterling Holdings became what it is today.””

I looked at the letter again.

“Then why would my grandfather say she destroyed our family?””

Luca glanced at Arthur.

“Because she was the reason your father almost lost everything.””

Arthur immediately stepped forward.

“That’s enough.””

I turned toward him.

“No.””

The word came naturally now.

Strangely, it felt powerful.

“I’m starting to understand something.””

My father stared at me.

“What?””

“You spent my whole life telling me I was too emotional.””

I looked around the ballroom.

“But every time I got close to the truth, you were the one who panicked.””

His face hardened.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

“Then tell me.””

Silence.

“Tell me why my grandfather hid documents from you.””

Silence.

“Tell me why you lied about Michael.””

Silence.

“Tell me why my name is on a trust you never wanted me to find.””

The more questions I asked, the smaller he looked.

Not physically.

Arthur Sterling was still a tall, intimidating man.

But the image he had spent decades building was cracking.

Michael looked at me.

“Jessi.””

I turned.

“I know you have questions.””

I almost laughed.

“Questions?””

My voice broke slightly.

“I have thirty-two years of questions.””

His expression hurt.

And somehow, that made me angrier.

Because I didn’t want sympathy.

I wanted answers.

“Why did you leave?””

The ballroom became silent.

Michael looked down.

“I didn’t leave because I wanted to.””

“Then why?””

He looked at Arthur.

My father said nothing.

That was enough.

Michael continued.

“When you were born, I was working with Arthur and your grandfather. Sterling Holdings was growing quickly.””

He paused.

“Your grandfather trusted me.””

Arthur scoffed.

“He trusted too many people.””

Michael ignored him.

“But Arthur wanted more control.””

My father’s jaw tightened.

“He was always obsessed with protecting the company.””

“No,” Michael said.

“He was obsessed with owning everything.””

The guests watched silently.

A wedding had become a courtroom.

And somehow, my father was the one on trial.

Michael continued.

“When your grandfather discovered money had been moved without approval, he started investigating.””

I looked at the documents.

“The accounts.””

Michael nodded.

“Yes.””

“Arthur?””

My father’s face changed.

“Be careful.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because accusations are serious.””

I almost smiled.

“Funny.””

He frowned.

“What?””

“You’ve spent years accusing me of things without evidence.””

That shut him up.

Michael continued.

“Your grandfather believed someone inside the company was working against him.””

“And Eleanor Voss?””

Luca answered.

“She had access to everything.””

He pulled out a folder.

“Financial records. Contracts. Internal communications.””

I looked at the papers.

“Then why didn’t anyone expose her?””

Michael looked at Arthur.

Because that answer was obvious.

Arthur stepped forward.

“Because it wasn’t that simple.””

I looked at him.

“Finally.””

He ignored the comment.

“You think you understand business because you manage investments?””

“No.””

I held his gaze.

“I understand people.””

That hit harder than I expected.

My father looked away.

“You don’t know what happened.””

“Then explain.””

For a moment, I thought he would.

I thought maybe, after everything, he would finally tell the truth.

But Arthur Sterling had built his entire life around control.

Admitting the truth meant admitting he had been wrong.

And men like my father hated that more than anything.

“She betrayed us,” he said finally.

I waited.

“That’s all?””

“That’s enough.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“It’s not.””

My voice became stronger.

“Because every time someone hurts me, you tell everyone there are two sides.””

I pointed at him.

“But tonight, you don’t want two sides.””

I looked at Michael.

“You want me to believe he abandoned me.””

Then I looked at Arthur.

“You want me to believe he was the problem.””

I shook my head.

“But both of you keep avoiding the same question.””

Nobody moved.

“What happened the night he disappeared?””

Michael closed his eyes.

Arthur went completely still.

That reaction told me everything.

It wasn’t just a secret.

It was the secret.

Luca looked at me.

“I think you should hear this somewhere private.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

“If my family wanted privacy, they should have protected me privately.””

I looked around the ballroom.

“These people watched him humiliate me.””

I gestured toward the guests.

“They watched because they thought I deserved it.””

A few people lowered their eyes.

“So they can watch the truth too.””

Nobody argued.

Michael nodded slowly.

“Okay.””

He looked at Arthur.

“Then tell her.””

Arthur stared at him.

Michael’s voice became colder.

“Tell her what you did.””

My father’s expression changed.

“Don’t.””

“Tell her.””

“Michael.””

“Tell your daughter how you made sure I could never come back.””

My mother whispered:

“Arthur…”

Everyone turned toward her.

She looked terrified.

I looked at my mother.

“What?””

She immediately looked away.

“No.””

My heart sank.

“What do you know?””

“Jessi—”

“What do you know?””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I knew he was alive.””

The room exploded.

Chloe gasped.

I felt like the floor disappeared.

My mother looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

I stared at her.

“You knew?””

She nodded slowly.

“For years.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“For years?””

My voice became smaller.

“And you let me believe he was dead?””

She cried.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

“You were protecting him.””

She had no response.

Because she knew.

I looked at my father.

Then my mother.

Then Chloe.

Every person who claimed to love me had made a choice.

And every choice had been against me.

Michael stepped closer.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

He looked confused.

“For what?””

“For not fighting harder.””

The honesty surprised me.

He continued.

“I tried.””

His voice cracked.

“Your grandfather helped me. He tried to get custody. He tried to expose Arthur.””

I looked at Luca.

“Then why didn’t he?””

Luca slowly opened another folder.

“There was one problem.””

“What?””

He looked at me.

“Arthur had someone inside the legal system.””

My blood went cold.

“Who?””

Luca placed a document on the table.

A name was written at the top.

My father’s old law partner.

A man everyone in the city trusted.

A man who had handled my grandfather’s final documents.

I looked at the name.

And immediately understood why my grandfather had left the warning.

Because the betrayal wasn’t only inside my family.

It was inside the system that was supposed to protect us.

Then my phone rang.

Everyone looked at it.

Unknown number.

Again.

This time, I answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice came through.

Older.

Calm.

Familiar.

“Jessi Sterling?””

I froze.

“Yes?””

There was a pause.

Then she said:

“I’m Eleanor Voss.””

The ballroom went silent.

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“I know what Arthur did to your family.””

I looked at my father.

He looked terrified.

The woman continued.

“But before you believe Michael is innocent…”

My heart stopped.

“There is something you need to know.””

I swallowed.

“What?””

Her voice dropped.

“Your father didn’t disappear because Arthur forced him to leave.””

Everyone watched me.

“Your father disappeared because he was running from the truth.””

I felt the entire room shift.

Then Eleanor said the words that changed everything.

“Jessi, Michael is not the only person who lied to you.””

The call ended.

May you like

And for the first time that night…

I didn’t know who I could trust.
