Chapter 5

Mark's lawyer had found something in Jessica's bank records.

Something disturbing.

Over the past year, Jessica had been receiving regular payments.

Large payments.

From an unknown source.

$5,000 a month.

Every month.

For twelve months.

$60,000 total.

And the source was untraceable.

Hidden behind shell companies.

Offshore accounts.

"Who would be paying Jessica that kind of money?" I asked.

Mark's face was grim.

"We think it's hush money," he said. "Jessica knows something. Something about someone. Something valuable. And they're paying her to keep quiet."

"Or maybe it's blackmail," I said. "Maybe she's extorting someone."

"Either way," Mark said. "It's illegal. And it could be used against her. To show a pattern of criminal behavior. To help the criminal case. And to make sure she never gets custody of Lily again."

The investigation deepened.

Mark's forensic accountants followed the money.

And what they found was shocking.

The payments were coming from a large logistics company.

Not Mark's company.

A competitor.

And the CEO of that company was a man named Richard Hale.

Mark knew him.

They'd been rivals for years.

"Hale," Mark said. His voice was cold. "He's been trying to take down my company for years. He's tried everything. Corporate espionage. Poaching clients. Sabotage. Nothing has worked."

"You think Jessica was working for him?" I asked.

"I think she was giving him inside information," Mark said. "About my company. About my deals. About my strategies. She had access to my emails. My files. Everything. When we were married. And even after the divorce, during custody exchanges. She could have gotten anything."

He paused.

"And I think that's why she was so desperate for a vacation," he said. "Hale was probably pressuring her. Demanding more information. Threatening to expose her. She needed to get away. To think. To plan. And she didn't want Lily around to complicate things."

It all made sense.

The airport abandonment wasn't just about a vacation.

It was about Jessica's illegal activities catching up to her.

She was in trouble.

Deep trouble.

And she'd been willing to abandon her own child to save herself.

We turned all the evidence over to the FBI.

They expanded their investigation.

Now Jessica was facing more than just child endangerment charges.

She was facing corporate espionage charges.

Conspiracy.

Wire fraud.

And possibly more.

Richard Hale was also under investigation.

His company was raided.

His records were seized.

His empire was crumbling.

Jessica was panicking.

She tried to make a deal.

To testify against Hale in exchange for immunity.

But the FBI already had enough evidence.

They didn't need her.

And they weren't feeling generous.

Not after what she'd done to Lily.

Not after the lies.

Not after the manipulation.

She was going down.

And she was going down hard.

My parents were also caught up in the investigation.

They'd been receiving money from Jessica too.

Small amounts.

But enough to make them accessories.

Enough to get them into serious trouble.

They tried to claim they didn't know where the money was coming from.

But the evidence told a different story.

They'd known.

They'd helped.

They'd enabled Jessica in everything.

And now they were going to pay for it too.

The stress of everything was overwhelming.

But I wasn't alone.

Mark was there.

Always.

Supporting me.

Loving me.

Protecting me.

And Lily was thriving.

She was happy.

Healthy.

Safe.

She was doing well in school.

She had friends.

She loved living with her daddy.

And she loved having me there.

She called me Aunt Brooke.

But sometimes, when she was tired or scared, she'd call me Mommy.

And my heart would break and fill with love at the same time.

Mark and I grew closer every day.

We'd been through hell together.

And we'd come out stronger.

We fell in love.

Slowly.

Naturally.

Inevitably.

It wasn't planned.

It wasn't part of any scheme.

It just happened.

Two people who'd been hurt.

Who'd been betrayed.

Who found comfort and love in each other.

And in the little girl who'd brought us together.

One evening, after Lily was asleep, Mark took my hand.

We were sitting on the porch.

Watching the sunset.

"Brooke," he said. "I know this is complicated. I know we've been through a lot. And I know you might not be ready. But I need you to know. I love you. I'm in love with you. And I want to build a life with you. With Lily. As a family."

I looked at him.

At the man who'd saved me.

Who'd saved Lily.

Who'd given me a family when I'd lost my own.

"I love you too, Mark," I said. "And I want that too. More than anything."

He kissed me.

Softly.

Gently.

And everything felt right.

Perfect.

Like it was always meant to be.

But happiness couldn't last.

Not yet.

Jessica had one more card to play.

One more secret to reveal.

One that would destroy everything we were building.

She called Mark.

From jail.

She was screaming.

Crying.

Desperate.

"You think you've won?" she shrieked. "You think you can just take my daughter and my sister and live happily ever after? You don't know everything, Mark. You don't know the truth about Lily."

"What are you talking about?" Mark said.

He put her on speakerphone so I could hear.

"Lily," she said. Her voice was cold. Calculating. "She's not yours, Mark. She's not your daughter. You've been raising another man's child for six years. And you're never going to see her again."

The line went dead.

I stared at Mark.

His face was white.

Lily.

Not his daughter.

May you like

It couldn't be true.

Could it?
