Chapter 8: The Lawyer Who Helped Erase Our Family

I stared at the phone.

I waited for Rachel to laugh.

To say she was mistaken.

To say she had confused someone else.

Because the alternative was too impossible to accept.

My lawyer.

The person I trusted when my marriage collapsed.

The person who sat across from me while I cried.

The person who held my hand and told me, “You need to protect yourself now.””

Her name was Karen Whitmore.

For years, I had remembered her as the woman who helped me survive the hardest time of my life.

Now I had to consider something I never imagined.

Maybe she wasn’t helping me survive.

Maybe she was helping someone else win.

“Rachel…”

My voice trembled.

“You’re sure?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Rachel was quiet.

Then she said:

“Because I found the records.””

Daniel immediately stood.

“What records?””

Rachel answered through the phone.

“The payment records.””

My stomach dropped.

“Payment?””

“Yes.””

She took a breath.

“Marcus paid Karen to handle the divorce paperwork.””

The hallway went silent.

Michael looked at me.

I could see the anger building in his face.

Not the kind of anger from earlier.

Something deeper.

Because this wasn’t just about money anymore.

This was about trust.

About the people who were supposed to protect us.

Daniel took the phone from me.

“Rachel, where did you get this?””

“I told you. I found the files.””

“Where?””

A pause.

“Marcus’s old storage account.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Of course.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He handed the phone back.

“Marcus kept everything.””

Michael frowned.

“Why would someone who committed crimes keep evidence?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Because people like Marcus think they are untouchable.””

Rachel spoke again.

“He saved everything because he liked control.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“That’s why the messages existed.””

“Yes.””

“That’s why the bank records existed.””

“Yes.””

“He wanted proof of his own power.””

“Yes.””

Rachel’s voice softened.

“But he didn’t realize someone else would eventually find it.””

Michael looked at me.

“Mom.””

I looked at him.

“Do you remember Karen?””

He nodded slowly.

“She came to the house a lot after Dad left.””

I closed my eyes.

I remembered.

Karen sitting at my kitchen table.

Drinking coffee.

Listening to me cry.

Telling me that I was stronger than I realized.

Telling me I needed to accept that Daniel had moved on.

At the time, those words hurt.

But they felt honest.

Now they felt like poison.

“She knew,” I whispered.

Daniel looked at me.

“Lena.””

“She knew I was blaming you.””

My voice cracked.

“She watched me hate you.””

Nobody answered.

Because nobody needed to.

The truth was standing right there.

Rachel spoke quietly.

“She didn’t just know.””

My grip tightened.

“What else?””

“She helped create the story.””

I closed my eyes.

The story.

That was what it had always been.

A story.

A carefully built version of reality.

Daniel left.

Daniel didn’t care.

Daniel moved on.

I was abandoned.

Everyone repeated it until it became truth.

But it wasn’t.

Michael looked at Daniel.

“So what happened after?””

Daniel looked away.

“After what?””

“After Mom filed for divorce.””

A painful silence followed.

Then Daniel said:

“I tried to contact her.””

I looked up.

“What?””

He nodded.

“Many times.””

I felt confused.

“I never got anything.””

“I know.””

My heart started beating faster.

“What do you mean?””

Daniel looked at me.

“I sent letters.””

My face went numb.

“Letters?””

“Yes.””

“How many?””

“Six.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“I swear.””

“I never received any.””

Rachel spoke.

“That’s because Karen intercepted them.””

The words hit harder than anything else.

I stepped backward.

My hand touched the wall.

Six letters.

Six chances.

Six moments where maybe everything could have changed.

And I never saw them.

Because someone decided I shouldn’t.

Michael looked devastated.

“Mom…”

I forced myself to breathe.

“I thought…”

My voice broke.

“I thought he never tried.””

Daniel looked down.

“I thought you didn’t want to hear from me.””

The sadness in his voice was worse than anger.

Because we had both spent eighteen years believing the other person chose silence.

When really…

Someone had chosen it for us.

Michael looked between us.

“So you both lost eighteen years because other people lied?””

Neither of us answered.

Because that was exactly what happened.

A family destroyed not by one huge betrayal.

But by hundreds of small manipulations.

A phone call.

A missing letter.

A fake message.

A false story.

Rachel suddenly spoke faster.

“Lena, there’s something else.””

I closed my eyes.

I almost didn’t want to ask.

“What?””

“Karen still works with Marcus.””

My eyes opened.

“What?””

“She never stopped.””

Daniel immediately looked alarmed.

“She’s still involved?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Rachel hesitated.

“Because Marcus is not done.””

A chill ran through me.

“What does that mean?””

Rachel lowered her voice.

“He knows Michael found the records.””

Michael froze.

“How?””

Nobody spoke.

Then his phone buzzed.

All of us looked at it.

Another unknown number.

The entire hallway went silent.

Michael stared at the screen.

“Don’t open it,” Daniel said.

But Michael already had.

His face changed.

I knew that expression.

Fear.

Not for himself.

For someone else.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He handed me the phone.

The message was short.

*Congratulations, Michael.*

*You finally learned the truth.*

*But your mother still doesn’t know the biggest secret.*

My hands shook.

Another message appeared.

*Ask Daniel why he really stopped fighting for custody.*

I looked at Daniel.

His face had gone pale.

“Daniel?””

He didn’t answer.

Michael noticed.

“Dad?””

Daniel looked away.

And that was when I knew.

There was another secret.

Something I didn’t know.

Something Michael didn’t know.

Something even Chloe might not have known.

“Daniel.””

He swallowed.

“I didn’t stop fighting.””

The words came out quietly.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“I didn’t give up custody.””

My heart stopped.

“But the papers…”

“They were changed.””

Michael stepped closer.

“Then why didn’t you tell anyone?””

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“Because when I found out…”

A pause.

“It was too late.””

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at his son.

“It means someone had already convinced the court I was unstable.””

I felt sick.

“Unstable?””

He nodded.

“They claimed I was dangerous.””

Michael stared.

“Who claimed that?””

Daniel looked at me.

“I never knew.””

A notification appeared on Michael’s phone.

Another message.

This time, there was an attachment.

A document.

Michael opened it.

His expression changed instantly.

“Mom.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He turned the screen toward me.

It was an old court document.

A custody report.

At the bottom was a signature.

A signature I recognized.

Not Daniel’s.

Not Karen’s.

Someone else’s.

Someone who had testified against Daniel.

Someone who had claimed he was an unfit father.

I stared at the name.

My blood turned cold.

Because it wasn’t Marcus.

It wasn’t Chloe.

It wasn’t Karen.

It was someone from my own family.

Someone who had hugged me after the divorce.

Someone who told me they were proud of how strong I was.

Michael whispered:

“Mom…”

I looked at him.

“Who is that?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because the name on the document belonged to the person I trusted more than almost anyone.

And the final message from the unknown number appeared beneath it.

*Now you know why your family was destroyed.*

*Your own sister helped them do it.*
