Chapter 9: The Father I Never Knew
My father's name stared back at me from the screen.
A name I had spent years trying to understand.
A name attached to a man who disappeared before I was old enough to remember him.
A name my mother rarely spoke.
*Richard Ellison.*
For a moment, I forgot about Grant.
I forgot about the wedding.
I forgot about everything happening around me.
Because suddenly, the biggest mystery wasn't what Grant had done.
It was why my father was connected to it.
"No.""
The word left my mouth quietly.
I stepped back.
"My father?""
Nobody answered.
Because nobody had a simple answer.
Theo looked at Daniel.
"You knew Richard Ellison?""
Daniel slowly nodded.
"Yes.""
My eyes moved to him.
"You knew my father?""
Daniel looked at me.
"Mara...""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"Don't do that.""
His expression softened.
"Do what?""
"Say my name like you feel sorry for me.""
The room went quiet.
"I spent my entire life believing my father left because he didn't care.""
My voice trembled.
"And now I'm finding out he was involved in the biggest betrayal of my life?""
Daniel looked down.
"I should have told you sooner.""
"Yes.""
The honesty surprised him.
But it was true.
Everyone had been protecting me by keeping secrets.
And somehow, those secrets had created a second betrayal.
Matthew studied the document carefully.
"This doesn't necessarily mean your father created the plan.""
I looked at him.
"What does it mean?""
He pointed at the screen.
"His name appears under original strategy consultant.""
I frowned.
"Strategy consultant?""
Matthew nodded.
"Not owner.""
"So he helped design it.""
"Yes.""
I felt sick.
My father.
The man I never knew.
The man my mother told me had abandoned us.
Had helped create the plan that nearly destroyed my career.
I turned toward Daniel.
"Why did my mother trust you with this?""
Daniel sighed.
"Because she knew the truth about Richard.""
"What truth?""
He hesitated.
Then he reached into the folder.
He pulled out another document.
"This.""
I took it.
The page was old.
A legal record.
At the top was a date.
A date from before I was born.
I scanned the information.
Then froze.
"This is a partnership agreement.""
Daniel nodded.
"Between Richard Ellison and me.""
I looked up.
"You were partners?""
"Yes.""
My heart started pounding.
"With my father?""
Daniel nodded.
"We built a development company together.""
The pieces started shifting.
"But my mother said he left.""
Daniel looked away.
"He did.""
"Why?""
A long silence.
Then:
"Because he made a choice.""
Daniel sat down.
For the first time, the powerful businessman disappeared.
What remained was a man remembering something painful.
"Richard was brilliant.""
He looked at the document.
"He understood design, planning, investments. He could see possibilities other people couldn't.""
I listened.
"Your mother was different.""
A small smile appeared.
"She saw people.""
I swallowed.
"She sounds like her.""
"She was.""
Daniel looked at me.
"That was why Richard loved her.""
The word hit me.
Loved.
Not left.
Not abandoned.
Loved.
"Then what happened?""
Daniel looked at the floor.
"Richard became obsessed with success.""
My stomach tightened.
"Like Grant.""
Daniel nodded slowly.
"More dangerous.""
Nobody spoke.
"He believed talent alone wasn't enough. He believed control was the only way to win.""
I looked at the document.
"And Harborstone?""
"Richard believed it could become the foundation of a massive company.""
Matthew added:
"But your father's methods became questionable.""
I looked at him.
"Questionable how?""
Matthew exchanged a glance with Daniel.
"Richard believed ownership mattered more than creators.""
A cold feeling moved through me.
The same belief Grant had.
The same belief that my work was something to possess.
Not respect.
Daniel continued.
"Your mother discovered Richard had been making agreements without telling her.""
I whispered:
"With who?""
Daniel looked at Grant.
Then at the documents.
"People like Grant.""
The room became colder.
"Richard didn't create Harborstone to destroy you.""
Daniel paused.
"He created a system.""
"What kind of system?""
"A system where talented people created things, and powerful people owned them.""
My chest tightened.
"So Grant learned from him.""
"Yes.""
Daniel looked at me.
"Grant didn't invent this.""
He pointed at the screen.
"He inherited it.""
Grant had been silent the entire time.
Until then.
"That's enough.""
Everyone turned.
He looked exhausted.
Not angry.
Not confident.
Just tired.
"You all want me to be the villain.""
Nobody answered.
He looked at me.
"Mara, you think I woke up one day and decided to ruin your life?""
I stared at him.
"I think you made choices.""
His expression broke slightly.
"You don't understand what it was like growing up.""
I almost laughed.
"Growing up rich?""
His jaw tightened.
"You think money makes things easy?""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"But it makes people believe they can take whatever they want.""
That hurt him.
Because somewhere inside, he knew it was true.
Grant looked away.
"My father was never proud of me.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
"Grant.""
"No.""
Grant's voice cracked.
"You don't get to pretend now.""
The room went silent.
"You taught me the same thing.""
Daniel looked stunned.
"What?""
"You taught me that winning mattered.""
Grant laughed bitterly.
"You always talked about people who built empires. People who took risks.""
He pointed toward the documents.
"You never told me what they lost.""
Daniel's expression changed.
Because there was truth buried inside Grant's excuse.
But truth wasn't the same as innocence.
Grant had still chosen.
Celeste stepped forward.
"I need to ask one thing.""
Everyone looked at her.
She looked at Grant.
"When you met me...""
Her voice shook.
"Was I part of the plan?""
Grant didn't answer.
That was enough.
Celeste closed her eyes.
A tear slipped down her cheek.
"I hate that I still wanted you to say no.""
Nobody spoke.
Because sometimes the worst answer was the one people already knew.
The assistant suddenly looked up from the computer.
"Mr. Rowan.""
Matthew turned.
"What?""
"We found another section.""
"Another?""
The assistant nodded.
"The document has multiple versions.""
He clicked.
A second file opened.
The title appeared.
*Harborstone Final Transfer Plan.*
Matthew read silently.
Then his face changed.
"What?""
Daniel stood.
"What does it say?""
Matthew looked at me.
"This was created after your divorce.""
My heart dropped.
"After?""
He nodded.
"This wasn't about taking the project.""
I stared.
"Then what was it about?""
Matthew turned the screen.
The document showed a list.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
And one final objective.
I read the words slowly.
*Permanent removal of Mara Ellison from professional ownership and public recognition.*
My breath caught.
Theo moved beside me.
"They weren't just trying to steal Harborstone.""
I looked at the screen.
"No.""
My voice was quiet.
"They were trying to erase me.""
Then I noticed something else.
A signature at the bottom.
Not Grant's.
Not Ethan's.
Not Jonathan's.
A signature that had been hidden until now.
Daniel saw it too.
His face turned pale.
"Impossible.""
I looked at him.
"Who?""
He stared at the name.
Then whispered:
"The person who signed this was supposed to be dead.""
I froze.
"What?""
Daniel looked at me.
"Mara...""
His voice dropped.
"Your father didn't disappear.""
The room went silent.
"He was hiding.""
My heart pounded.
"Where?""
Daniel looked at the document.
Then at me.
"He has been alive this entire time.""
I couldn't move.
Because after five years of believing Grant was the biggest secret in my life...
I realized I had been wrong.
May you like
The biggest secret had been buried long before I ever met him.
And my father had just come back from the dead.
