Chapter 6: The Man From Before Me
For a moment, I thought I had heard him wrong.
The hallway lights flickered softly above me.
The hospital smelled like disinfectant and coffee.
Somewhere nearby, a child laughed.
A normal sound.
A normal night.
Except nothing about my life felt normal anymore.
“Her ex-husband?””
I repeated the words because my brain refused to accept them.
Ethan didn’t answer right away.
“Marcus…”
“No.””
My voice sharpened.
“No, you don’t get to say something like that and then go quiet.””
“I know.””
“Who are you talking about?””
A pause.
Then:
“Daniel.””
The name hit me like a physical blow.
Daniel.
I knew that name.
Not because Claire talked about him.
Because she never did.
That was the strange part.
When we started dating, I knew she had been married before. Everyone had a past.
I didn’t care.
She told me the marriage had ended years before we met.
She said it was painful.
She said she wanted a fresh start.
And I respected that.
I never pushed.
Never asked for details she didn’t want to share.
Because I loved her.
But now I was standing in a hospital hallway learning that the man she said belonged to her past was somehow back in her life.
And my daughter knew about it before I did.
“How long has he been around?””
Ethan sighed.
“I don’t know.””
“That’s not good enough.””
“I’m telling you what I know.””
“Then tell me everything.””
Silence.
I could hear him breathing.
“He contacted her about two months ago.””
My chest tightened.
“Two months?””
“Yes.””
“And you knew?””
“I saw them.””
I stared at the floor.
“You saw them together.””
“Yes.””
“And you said nothing?””
“I didn’t know what was happening.””
I almost couldn’t believe it.
“So you thought hiding it was the right move?””
“Marcus—”
“No.””
I walked farther down the hallway, away from Maya’s room.
“You and Claire keep using the same excuse.””
“What excuse?””
“That you were protecting me.””
Ethan didn’t respond.
“Do you understand how ridiculous that sounds?””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice dropped.
“You both decided I couldn’t handle the truth about my own family.””
“That’s not what I meant.””
“Then what did you mean?””
Ethan was quiet.
Finally, he said:
“I thought you might do something you’d regret.””
I stopped walking.
“What does that mean?””
“You know what I mean.””
“No.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“I don’t.””
Ethan exhaled.
“Marcus, you have always been protective.””
“I’m a father.””
“I know.””
“You’re saying that like it’s a bad thing.””
“It isn’t.””
“Then explain.””
Another pause.
Then:
“Daniel hurt Claire badly.””
My expression changed.
“What?””
“Before you met her.””
I waited.
“He was controlling.””
The word made my stomach turn.
“Did he hurt her?””
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“I wasn’t there.””
“But you saw him.””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
Ethan hesitated.
“At a restaurant.””
“When?””
“The day Maya got sick.””
My mind raced.
“You were there?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“I was meeting someone nearby.””
“And you happened to see Claire with Daniel?””
“Yes.””
“That’s a convenient story.””
Ethan went quiet.
Immediately, I regretted saying it.
But I was angry.
Confused.
Every person I trusted seemed to have a different piece of my life.
And I was the last person to receive the full picture.
“I know how it sounds.””
“Because it sounds impossible.””
“I understand.””
“No, Ethan.””
I lowered my voice.
“You don’t understand.””
I looked through the window at Maya.
“She was lying in pain while all of you were having conversations about my family.””
Ethan said nothing.
“Why was Daniel there?””
“I don’t know.””
“Did Claire tell you?””
“No.””
“Did she tell me?””
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
I closed my eyes.
Because he was right.
She hadn’t.
“I need to talk to Claire.””
“I know.””
“No.””
My voice became firm.
“I need the truth.””
“You’re going to get it.””
“From her.””
“Yes.””
I hung up.
Not because the conversation was over.
Because I needed to see her face.
I walked back into Maya’s room.
Claire was sitting beside the bed.
She looked up immediately.
“You know.””
It wasn’t a question.
I stopped.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Her face changed.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
She knew exactly what I meant.
“Marcus…”
“Why didn’t you tell me Daniel contacted you?””
Maya’s eyes opened slightly.
She was awake.
I noticed Claire noticed too.
Immediately, she lowered her voice.
“Not here.””
I stared at her.
“You’re worried about where we talk now?””
“I don’t want Maya hearing this.””
“Why?””
Claire looked at our daughter.
“Because she doesn’t need more stress.””
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
“You don’t get to decide that anymore.””
Claire flinched.
That hurt me.
But it was true.
Not after tonight.
“Dad?””
Maya’s weak voice cut through the tension.
I turned.
“Hey.””
“Who is Daniel?””
The room froze.
Claire looked terrified.
I felt my heart sink.
Because my daughter knew that name.
“Why do you know that name?””
Maya looked at her mother.
Then at me.
“He came to school.””
The air disappeared.
“What?””
Claire stood quickly.
“Maya.””
“No.””
I looked at my wife.
“Let her talk.””
Maya swallowed.
“Mom told me not to say anything.””
I felt anger rise.
But I pushed it down.
“Why?””
“She said he was going through a hard time.””
I looked at Claire.
“You brought him around her?””
“No.””
Claire shook her head.
“No, I didn’t.””
“Then explain.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Maya continued.
“He waited outside the school once.””
My heart pounded.
“Once?””
She nodded.
“He wanted to talk to Mom.””
“And did he?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“After my dance practice.””
I looked at Claire.
“Were you there?””
She whispered:
“Yes.””
The answer broke something inside me.
“You were there.””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me.””
“I was going to.””
“When?””
She cried.
“I don’t know.””
I looked at her.
That was the truth.
She didn’t know.
Because she had no plan to tell me.
Not unless she was forced.
I stepped back.
“Why?””
Claire covered her face.
“Because he was threatening me.””
The words changed everything.
I stopped.
“What?””
“He wasn’t just contacting me.””
She lowered her hands.
“He wanted something.””
“What?””
Her voice shook.
“He wanted money.””
I stared.
“Money?””
“Yes.””
“Why would he come to you for money?””
Claire looked down.
And then she said the one thing I never expected.
“Because Daniel knows something about Maya.””
My blood went cold.
“What does he know?””
Claire didn’t answer.
“Claire.””
She looked at our daughter.
Then at me.
“He knows she isn’t…”
She stopped.
The silence was unbearable.
“Maya isn’t what?””
Claire’s face crumpled.
May you like
And when she finally spoke, her words changed everything I thought I knew about my family.
“He knows Maya isn’t biologically yours.””
