Chapter 11

Three years after the attack, I returned to Donovan Systems.

Not as an employee.

As a witness to change.

The company had moved out of the old executive floor.

Elaine said the renovation was “practical.”

Maya said everyone was tired of pretending the carpet had no ghosts.

The new compliance center was named after my mother.

The Margaret Donovan Ethics Lab.

I laughed when they told me.

Mom would have hated the word lab.

She would have liked the work.

I stood in front of the staff with a scar hidden under my hair and a speech card in my hand.

I still used cards.

No shame.

“My mother once told me that loyalty without truth becomes a cage,” I said. “This place had cages. Some were built by my father. Some by silence. Some by fear of losing a paycheck.”

Maya watched from the front row.

Her eyes were wet.

“But systems can be rebuilt. Not by pretending harm never happened, but by making sure it cannot hide so easily again.”

They applauded.

I accepted it.

That was new too.

After the ceremony, Elaine walked me past my old office.

The door was open.

Empty.

Fresh paint.

New carpet.

Still, my stomach clenched.

Marcus touched my hand.

“Want to leave?”

I almost said yes.

Then I stepped inside.

For a moment, I heard Dylan’s voice.

If I can’t take your job...

Then I heard my own.

Truth does not disappear.

The fear loosened.

I turned to Elaine.

“What will this room be?”

She smiled.

“Meditation space.”

I stared.

“That is wildly corporate.”

Maya grinned.

“I voted for snack room.”

“Better.”

We laughed.

The sound filled the office.

May you like

Not erasing the past.

Just refusing to let it have the only voice.
