Chapter 9: The Meeting That Changed Everything

Ryan arrived at 9:58 a.m.

Two minutes before the meeting.

He was carrying a black leather folder.

Vanessa followed him.

Mom came last.

I was already sitting in the conference room with Rebecca, Daniel, and Peter Walsh.

Ryan stopped when he saw Peter.

"What the hell is he doing here?""

Peter didn't move.

"I was asked to provide financial records.""

Ryan turned toward me.

"You invited my accountant?""

"I invited someone who has information about the transactions.""

"He's not my accountant anymore.""

Peter looked up.

"That's news to me.""

Ryan's jaw tightened.

Vanessa pulled out a chair.

"Can we please get this over with?""

I looked at her.

"Of course.""

Ryan placed his folder on the table.

"I brought what you wanted.""

He opened it.

Inside was a document with a typed statement and a signature.

My father's signature.

Beneath it was a date from eleven years earlier.

Ryan pushed it toward me.

"Read it.""

I didn't touch it.

Rebecca picked it up.

"Where did this document come from?""

"The family safe.""

"Was it there when the estate was settled?""

Ryan looked irritated.

"How would I know?""

"Did you produce it?""

"No.""

"Did you ask anyone to prepare it?""

"Absolutely not.""

Rebecca placed it on the table.

"Then you won't object to an independent examination.""

Ryan laughed.

"Do whatever you want.""

I looked at the document.

The wording was formal.

Almost too formal.

Dad had never spoken like that.

He'd written simple letters.

He'd used short sentences.

He'd called Ryan "my boy" and me "my girl.""

This document read like something prepared by a lawyer.

I looked at Ryan.

"Why does it say I agreed to provide financial support whenever you needed it?""

"Because Dad wanted you to look after me.""

"He wanted me to be your sister, not your bank.""

Ryan slapped the table.

"You're proving my point!""

I didn't move.

He continued.

"Dad knew I'd need help. He knew you were the responsible one. He knew you'd be successful.""

I stared at him.

"And he wanted you to become dependent on me?""

Ryan hesitated.

"That's not what I'm saying.""

"Then what are you saying?""

He looked toward Mom.

"Tell her.""

Mom's hands were trembling.

"Ryan, please.""

"Tell her what Dad wanted!""

Mom looked at me.

Then she whispered, "Your father wanted you both to help each other.""

I nodded.

"That's what the original letter says.""

Ryan shook his head.

"You're twisting everything.""

Rebecca opened her folder.

"Mr. Bennett, before we discuss the alleged authorization, we need to address the business documents.""

Ryan rolled his eyes.

"Here we go.""

She placed a copy of the transportation agreement in front of him.

"Do you recognize this?""

"Yes.""

"Who signed it?""

"I don't remember.""

"Did Claire authorize it?""

"She knew about the arrangement.""

"Do you have evidence of that?""

Ryan leaned back.

"Ask your accountant.""

Peter spoke.

"I never received written authorization from Claire.""

Ryan turned sharply.

"Nobody asked you.""

Rebecca continued.

"Did you submit this document to Claire's company?""

Ryan looked at the paper.

"Probably.""

"Did you know the signature was not hers?""

"No.""

Rebecca placed another page on the table.

It was the email exchange between Ryan and Vanessa.

Use the old signature file. The one Mom saved from the company documents.

Ryan went pale.

Vanessa looked at him.

"Where did they get that?""

Nobody answered.

Ryan grabbed the paper.

"This is private communication!""

Rebecca remained calm.

"It is relevant to the investigation.""

Ryan turned toward Vanessa.

"Did you send this?""

She shook her head.

"No.""

"Then who did?""

Peter cleared his throat.

"I preserved the business records.""

Ryan stood.

"You little—"

"Sit down," I said.

He turned toward me.

"Don't tell me what to do.""

"Then don't threaten people in my office.""

He remained standing for several seconds.

Finally, he sat.

Rebecca placed another document on the table.

"The lender has also received a formal dispute regarding the $250,000 guarantee and the $400,000 application.""

Ryan stared at her.

"You can't prove those signatures are fake.""

"That is precisely why they are being examined.""

"Claire gave me her information!""

I leaned forward.

"For what purpose?""

He said nothing.

"Did I authorize you to use my identity to guarantee a loan?""

"You knew I needed financing.""

"That's not an answer.""

Ryan rubbed his face.

"You're impossible.""

I looked at him.

"No, Ryan. I'm finally paying attention.""

Vanessa had remained quiet throughout the meeting.

Until Rebecca placed the draft acquisition agreement in front of her.

"Ms. Bennett, did you prepare this document?""

Vanessa glanced at Ryan.

Then at the paper.

"I helped with some formatting.""

"Did you prepare the ownership assignment?""

"I don't remember.""

Rebecca showed her the document properties.

"Your name appears as the author.""

Vanessa's face tightened.

Ryan immediately interrupted.

"She was just helping me with paperwork.""

Rebecca continued.

"Did you know the regional distribution agreement belonged to Claire's company?""

Vanessa looked at the table.

Ryan answered for her.

"Of course she did.""

Rebecca looked at him.

"I asked your wife.""

Vanessa took a breath.

"Yes.""

The room became silent.

I looked at her.

"Then why did you prepare the assignment?""

She swallowed.

"Ryan said you had agreed.""

"Did you ask me?""

"No.""

"Why not?""

She glanced toward Ryan again.

"Because he said you would change your mind once the sale was completed.""

I stared at her.

"So you knew I hadn't signed it.""

She didn't answer.

"Vanessa?""

"Yes.""

Ryan suddenly stood.

"That's enough!""

Rebecca raised one hand.

"Mr. Bennett, please sit down.""

He ignored her.

"You're turning this into something it isn't!""

Vanessa's voice trembled.

"Ryan, stop.""

He turned toward her.

"Stay out of it.""

She looked at him.

"No.""

For the first time since I'd known her, Vanessa didn't look away.

"You told me Claire had agreed. You told me the contract was already ours. You told me all we had to do was complete the paperwork.""

Ryan's face darkened.

"Because that's what happened.""

"No, Ryan. You told me that.""

He stared at her.

Vanessa continued.

"You also told me the money from Claire's company was temporary. You said we'd repay it after the acquisition.""

I leaned forward.

"How much did you know about the loans?""

Vanessa looked at me.

"I knew about the first one.""

"And the second?""

She hesitated.

"I knew he was applying for more financing.""

"Did you know he used my identity?""

"I thought you had agreed.""

"Then why did you ask him whether Claire would find out?""

Vanessa's eyes filled.

She looked down.

"Because I knew something wasn't right.""

Ryan pushed his chair back.

"This is ridiculous.""

Vanessa began crying.

"You said we'd lose the house if I didn't help you!""

Ryan stared at her.

"Not now.""

"You told me the boys would have nothing!""

"Vanessa.""

"You said Claire would never let the family collapse!""

Ryan slammed his palm onto the table.

"SHUT UP!""

The sound echoed through the conference room.

Nobody moved.

Then Vanessa reached into her handbag.

She removed a small notebook.

"I brought this.""

Ryan's expression changed.

"What is that?""

She placed it in front of Rebecca.

"Everything he told me to record.""

I looked at her.

"What is it?""

"Payments. Transfers. Dates. Some of the conversations.""

Ryan lunged forward.

"Give me that!""

Rebecca immediately pulled the notebook toward herself.

"Do not touch the evidence.""

Vanessa backed away.

Ryan looked at her as though he had never seen her before.

"You stupid woman.""

She began crying harder.

I felt no satisfaction.

Only exhaustion.

Because whatever happened next, two children were going to discover that their parents had been living a lie.

Rebecca spent the next twenty minutes reviewing the notebook.

There were handwritten entries.

Dates.

Amounts.

Supplier names.

Personal transfers.

And several notes that appeared to reference conversations between Ryan and Vanessa.

One entry caught my attention.

Claire's monthly money – $800 to Ryan. Keep household explanation unchanged.

Another:

Christmas funds – $6,400 received from Claire. $2,100 gifts. Remaining balance toward supplier arrears and vehicle payment.

I stared at the numbers.

Only $2,100 had been spent on the gifts.

And Lily's present had cost $4.99.

The rest of the Christmas budget had gone toward Ryan's company and personal expenses.

I turned the page.

There was another entry.

Mercer deposit – $50,000. Hold until transfer approved.

Then:

Customer database delivered.

I looked at Vanessa.

"Did you know about the customer database?""

She nodded.

"Ryan said it was part of the acquisition.""

"Did you know the information belonged to my company?""

"Yes.""

"Did you send it?""

She looked at Ryan.

Then she nodded again.

I felt sick.

"Why?""

She wiped her cheeks.

"He said it was already approved.""

I stared at her.

"Did you ever think about what would happen to my employees?""

She couldn't answer.

Ryan stood abruptly.

"This meeting is over.""

Rebecca looked up.

"Not yet.""

He pointed at Vanessa.

"You're going to regret this.""

She flinched.

I stood.

"Ryan, don't threaten your wife in my office.""

He turned toward me.

"You think you're some kind of hero now?""

"No.""

"You've destroyed my business.""

I looked at him.

"You destroyed your business when you decided my company was yours to use.""

He laughed bitterly.

"You're going to pay for this.""

Rebecca closed her folder.

"Any further threats will be documented.""

Ryan grabbed his leather folder.

Then he turned toward Mom.

"Are you coming?""

Mom didn't move.

"Mom!""

She looked at him.

"Ryan, I can't keep doing this.""

His face twisted.

"You're choosing her?""

Mom began crying.

"I'm choosing the truth.""

Ryan stared at her.

Then he stormed out.

Vanessa remained seated.

Mom stayed beside her.

For a few seconds, the three of us said nothing.

Then Vanessa whispered, "I'm sorry.""

I looked at her.

"Why?""

She began crying again.

"For Christmas. For Lily. For everything.""

I wanted to forgive her.

Part of me wanted to believe she had simply been frightened.

But she'd helped prepare the documents.

She'd sent the customer information.

She'd watched my daughter being humiliated.

"I'm not ready to forgive you," I said.

She nodded.

"I understand.""

Rebecca gathered the notebook.

"Thank you for providing this. We'll arrange for a formal statement.""

Vanessa stood.

Before leaving, she turned toward me.

"There's something else.""

I waited.

"Ryan has another account.""

My stomach tightened.

"What account?""

"A business account under Bennett Family Holdings.""

"Yes. We know about that.""

She shook her head.

"No. I mean another one. A private account. He moved money there whenever he received payments from your company.""

I looked at Rebecca.

"How much?""

Vanessa's voice dropped.

"I don't know exactly.""

Then she added:

"But I saw a statement last week.""

"How much was in it?""

She closed her eyes.

"About $92,000.""

I stared at her.

"Where did that money come from?""

She whispered:

"Your company.""

By the time the meeting ended, Rebecca had already arranged for the additional account information to be preserved through the appropriate legal channels.

I sat alone in my office afterward.

The notebook lay on the desk.

The numbers were impossible to ignore.

The money Mom had received.

The payments Ryan had diverted.

The loans.

The customer information.

The false contract.

And the $92,000 sitting in a private account.

For years, I'd believed my brother was simply irresponsible.

Now I was beginning to understand how much planning had gone into making me responsible for him.

At 4:15 p.m., Peter called.

"Claire, I need to tell you something.""

"What is it?""

"I reviewed the notebook Vanessa provided.""

"And?""

"There's a transfer scheduled for tomorrow morning.""

I sat upright.

"To whom?""

"An account associated with Daniel Mercer.""

"For how much?""

"Forty-five thousand dollars.""

I stared at the wall.

"Why?""

"According to Ryan's notes, it's the remaining payment under the acquisition arrangement.""

"But the acquisition has been disputed.""

"Yes.""

"Then he can't transfer that money.""

Peter hesitated.

"There's another problem.""

"What?""

"The account isn't registered under Bennett Supply Solutions.""

I closed my eyes.

"Whose name is it under?""

He took a breath.

"Your mother's.""

I went completely still.

"Explain.""

"Ryan has been using Patricia's account to move funds. The transfer instructions are scheduled through her bank.""

I looked at the old family photograph on my desk.

My mother had been crying in my office only hours earlier.

She'd said she wanted to choose the truth.

But the money was still moving.

"Does she know?""

Peter didn't answer.

Then he said, "Claire, I think you should ask her.""

I ended the call.

I was about to contact Rebecca when my phone rang.

Mom.

I answered.

"Mom, we need to talk.""

Her voice was barely audible.

"Claire, I need you to listen.""

"What happened?""

She began crying.

"Ryan came to the house.""

"Okay.""

"He took the notebook.""

I froze.

"What?""

"He came back after the meeting. He said Vanessa had betrayed him. He said he needed to fix everything before tomorrow.""

"Mom, where are you?""

"At home.""

"Are you safe?""

She hesitated.

Then she whispered:

"Claire, I think I've made a terrible mistake.""

My grip tightened around the phone.

"What did you do?""

"I signed something for Ryan.""

I stood.

"What did you sign?""

She started sobbing.

"A transfer authorization.""

"For what amount?""

She couldn't answer.

"Mom!""

"Forty-five thousand dollars.""

I closed my eyes.

"From where?""

She whispered the words.

"From the account he opened in my name.""

I felt the floor shift beneath me.

Then she said something that made everything even worse.

"He told me it was money he had borrowed from you. He said he was returning it to you before the bank could freeze the account.""

I stared at my office door.

"Mom, that money is going to Daniel Mercer.""

She went silent.

Then, in a trembling voice, she said:

"Claire, Ryan told me something else.""

"What?""

"He said if the transfer doesn't go through tomorrow, he'll make sure you lose your company.""

I felt my heart pounding.

"How?""

Mom took a shaky breath.

"He says he has one final document.""

"What document?""

"I don't know. But he says it has your signature, and this time, he says nobody will be able to prove it isn't yours.""

The call ended.

I immediately dialed Rebecca.

And as the phone rang, an email notification appeared on my computer.

It was from our largest client.

*URGENT: Notice of Termination Review – Suspected Unauthorized Transfer of Distribution Rights.*

I opened it.

The message contained one sentence.

We have received additional documentation suggesting that the ownership dispute may involve a previously undisclosed financial arrangement.

I stared at the screen.

Then I saw the attachment.

It was a scanned copy of a document dated six months earlier.

My signature appeared at the bottom.

But the final paragraph was something I'd never seen before.

It stated that I had personally authorized Ryan Bennett to act as my representative in all matters involving the company's regional distribution agreements.

I read it once.

Then again.

And finally, I understood why Ryan had been so confident.

He hadn't just forged one signature.

May you like

He'd prepared a document designed to make every other forged document look legitimate.

And tomorrow morning, he intended to use it against me.
