Chapter 8: The Missing Piece of the Night Everything Changed

I watched the video three times.

Then a fourth.

Each time, I noticed something different.

The first time, I saw Vanessa.

The second time, I saw the object in her hand.

The third time, I saw Ryan’s face.

Not after the crash.

Before.

That was what bothered me most.

He didn’t look surprised when Vanessa appeared.

He looked like he expected her.

I called Detective Harris immediately.

He answered after one ring.

“Mr. Carter.””

“What is that?””

A pause.

“You saw it.””

“Yes.””

“The object?””

“Yes.””

“What do you think it is?””

I looked at the frozen image on my screen.

A small black device.

Something that could easily be mistaken for a phone.

But I knew it wasn’t.

“An audio recorder.””

Detective Harris was quiet.

“That’s our suspicion.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why would Vanessa have a recorder?””

“That’s what we’re trying to determine.””

“No.””

My voice became harder.

“We already know.””

“James—”

“She wasn’t recording the accident.””

I looked at the video.

“She was recording Tiana.””

When I showed Tiana the footage, she covered her mouth.

“No.””

I watched her face.

Not anger.

Not surprise.

Fear.

“You knew?””

She shook her head.

“I didn’t know she recorded anything.””

“Then why are you scared?””

She looked at the screen.

“Because I remember that night.””

“What do you remember?””

Her eyes moved toward the window.

“Vanessa was calm.””

“Calm?””

“Yes.””

“That’s what scares you?””

“No.””

She swallowed.

“Because while Ryan and I were arguing…”

She stopped.

“Tiana.””

“She wasn’t watching us.””

“What was she doing?””

My sister looked at me.

“She was waiting.””

The word hung in the room.

Waiting.

Not reacting.

Not arriving by accident.

Waiting.

I sat down.

“So Vanessa knew.””

“Yes.””

“Knew what?””

“That something was going to happen.””

Detective Harris arrived later that afternoon.

He brought two officers with him, but he spoke to us privately.

The first thing he did was place the original video on the table.

“The footage from the parking lot was edited.””

Tiana closed her eyes.

“I knew it.””

“The version Ryan provided removed approximately forty-seven seconds.””

“Forty-seven seconds?””

“Yes.””

I looked at him.

“What happened during those forty-seven seconds?””

He pressed play.

The video began.

The argument.

Ryan and Tiana.

Then Vanessa entered the frame.

She approached Ryan.

Not Tiana.

Ryan.

They spoke quietly.

The audio was unclear.

Then Vanessa handed Ryan something.

A small device.

The same one I noticed.

Ryan looked at it.

Then he looked toward Tiana.

Detective Harris paused the video.

“This is where the original footage becomes important.””

He continued.

The next moments were painful to watch.

Ryan walked toward his car.

Tiana followed.

They argued again.

Then Ryan got inside.

But before he drove away…

Vanessa reached into her purse.

And pulled out a second phone.

My blood ran cold.

“Two phones?””

Detective Harris nodded.

“We believe one phone was used to communicate with Tiana.””

“And the other?””

“We don’t know yet.””

Tiana whispered:

“Ryan had another phone.””

I turned.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“Before I left, I found one.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I didn’t know what it was for.””

Detective Harris looked at her.

“Where is it?””

“I don’t have it.””

“Who does?””

Tiana hesitated.

Then:

“Vanessa.””

The investigation changed after that.

Not publicly.

Not yet.

But privately, everything moved faster.

Detective Harris explained that they needed to build a complete picture.

Not just prove Ryan lied.

They needed to understand why.

And that was when we discovered something I never expected.

The accident wasn’t the only thing Ryan and Vanessa had planned.

There was a second part.

A part involving Lily.

That evening, I picked Lily up from school.

I didn’t tell her everything.

Children should not have to carry adult secrets.

But I needed to ask her something.

“Lily?””

She looked up from her homework.

“Yeah?””

“Do you remember Vanessa from the party?””

She nodded.

“She’s Daddy’s fiancée.””

“What do you think about her?””

Lily shrugged.

“She’s nice.””

The answer surprised me.

“Nice?””

“She buys me things.””

I looked down.

“What kind of things?””

“Clothes. Toys.””

“Does she talk about your mom?””

Lily became quiet.

That was my answer.

“What does she say?””

“She doesn’t say much.””

“Nothing?””

Lily shook her head.

“But once…”

“Once what?””

“She said Mommy had problems.””

My heart tightened.

“When did she say that?””

“Last year.””

“Where?””

“At home.””

“Who was there?””

“Daddy.””

“What did Daddy do?””

Lily looked confused.

“He smiled.””

A chill moved through me.

“Smiled?””

“Yes.””

That night, I called Tiana.

“She has been poisoning Lily against you.””

My sister went silent.

“I know.””

“No.””

My voice softened.

“You don’t understand.””

“I do.””

“No.””

I looked at Lily’s room.

“She didn’t just lose time with you.””

I lowered my voice.

“She was taught to lose you.””

Tiana started crying.

And for the first time, I heard something different.

Not fear.

Grief.

“I missed everything.””

I closed my eyes.

“Birthdays.””

“School plays.””

“Her first dance.””

“I know.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“You don’t know.””

She took a shaky breath.

“I kept every letter I wrote her.””

“Letters?””

“I wrote one every week.””

My chest tightened.

“Where are they?””

“With me.””

“Why?””

“Because I thought maybe someday…”

She couldn’t finish.

I understood.

Someday.

A word people use when they’re holding onto hope.

The next morning, Detective Harris called.

“We found the second phone.””

My heart jumped.

“Where?””

“At Vanessa’s apartment.””

“What’s on it?””

“We’re still examining it.””

“But?””

He paused.

“But it contains deleted files.””

“What kind?””

“Messages.””

“Between who?””

Another pause.

“Ryan and Vanessa.””

I stood.

“Can you access them?””

“We’re working on it.””

“How long?””

“Not long.””

I could hear something in his voice.

A hesitation.

“What?””

“James.””

“Yes?””

“There’s something else.””

“What?””

“The phone wasn’t hidden.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“It was left somewhere obvious.””

“Why?””

“That’s what concerns me.””

I understood.

Someone wanted it found.

“Are you saying Vanessa wanted us to have it?””

“We don’t know.””

“But?””

“But it looks intentional.””

That afternoon, Ryan called me.

I almost didn’t answer.

But I did.

“Hello?””

His voice sounded different.

Less confident.

“You’re making a mistake.””

I said nothing.

“You think you know the truth.””

“I know enough.””

“No, you don’t.””

“Then explain.””

Silence.

Then:

“Vanessa isn’t who you think she is.””

I froze.

Because I expected him to defend her.

Not accuse her.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

“Are you trying to turn me against her?””

“No.””

His voice became urgent.

“I’m trying to tell you she was the one who pushed everything.””

I stared at the wall.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I don’t care what you believe.””

“Then why tell me?””

A pause.

Then:

“Because she’s going to leave me with the blame.””

I almost laughed.

“You’re worried about blame?””

“I’m warning you.””

“Ryan.””

“What?””

“You destroyed my sister’s life.””

His voice dropped.

“I know.””

The admission shocked me.

For the first time, he said something honest.

Then he continued:

“But you don’t know why.””

My grip tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Before he answered, someone shouted in the background.

A woman’s voice.

Vanessa.

Ryan went silent.

Then whispered:

“I have to go.””

The call ended.

Two hours later, Detective Harris sent me a message.

A single screenshot.

Nothing else.

I opened it.

It was from the recovered phone.

A conversation between Ryan and Vanessa.

The first message was from Ryan.

*She knows too much.*

Vanessa replied:

*Then make sure she disappears before she talks.*

My hands went cold.

I kept reading.

Ryan:

*What about Lily?*

Vanessa:

*She already believes your version.*

Ryan:

*And James?*

A pause.

Then Vanessa’s reply.

*James is the problem.*

I stared at the screen.

Because suddenly I understood.

The accident.

The lies.

The custody battle.

The engagement.

It wasn’t the end of their plan.

It was only the beginning.

Then another message appeared.

One Detective Harris had highlighted.

Sent two days before the ballroom incident.

Ryan:

*If Tiana comes back, we use the final option.*

Vanessa:

*The same one we discussed?*

Ryan:

*Yes.*

I read the words again.

*The final option.*

My phone rang.

Detective Harris.

I answered.

“James.””

“What is it?””

His voice was serious.

“We need you to get Lily somewhere safe.””

My heart stopped.

“Why?””

“Because we just discovered what the final option means.””

I stood frozen.

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“Ryan and Vanessa weren’t planning to make Tiana disappear.””

May you like

My blood turned cold.

“They were planning to make Lily disappear from everyone else.””
