Chapter 13

We opened the business three months later.

Wilson & Wilson. Pool and Spa Services.

Dad ran the operations. I ran the office.

Eleanor was our first customer. She had a small pool at her house that needed work.

Dad did it for free. She insisted on paying. They argued for an hour.

She won.

Word spread. The honest pool man who had solved a murder.

People wanted to do business with us.

Within six months, we had three trucks and eight employees.

I was good at it. Better than I ever was at Harlow Development.

Because this was ours. Built on honesty. Built on trust.

Richard was sentenced to life without parole.

Melissa got five years. She would serve three.

Victor got twenty.

Eleanor visited David's grave every Sunday.

Dad and I went with her.

We brought flowers. We talked to him. We told him about the business. About life.

One Sunday, Eleanor said something that stayed with me.

"David always believed that good people would win. He just didn't live to see it."

I squeezed her hand.

"He sees it now. I know he does."

Life was good. But I was still looking over my shoulder.

Every time a car slowed down. Every time the phone rang with an unknown number.

Dad noticed.

One night, he sat me down.

"Sweetheart. It's over. They're in prison. Victor is in maximum security. Richard will never get out. You're safe now."

I nodded. But I didn't believe it. Not fully.

Then, one day, a letter came.

No return address.

I opened it with shaking hands.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

And a photograph.

The photograph was of me. Taken outside the office. Recent.

On the back, one sentence.

"I'm not done with you."

My blood ran cold.

I called Detective Mills.

He came immediately.

He took the letter. The photograph.

"We'll test for DNA. We'll trace it. But I need you to understand something."

He looked at me.

"Victor is in prison. Richard is in prison. Melissa is in prison. This could be a hoax. A fan of the case. Someone trying to scare you."

"Or?"

"Or someone else. Someone we haven't found. Someone who helped them."

I thought back.

Melissa had mentioned someone. In the diner. She said, "He's not what you think. He's coming for all of us."

I had assumed she meant Victor.

May you like

But what if she meant someone else?

What if there was a fourth person?
