Chapter 7

Daniel broke first.
Not because he grew a conscience.
Because Vanessa blamed him.
When prosecutors added Lily’s reopened case to the investigation, Vanessa’s attorney claimed Daniel had controlled everything.
Daniel’s attorney responded by offering testimony.
Priya warned me before the proffer.
“He may say things you cannot unhear.”
“I already live with them.”
Daniel gave his statement in a federal interview room.
I watched from behind glass with Detective Ruiz, Marcus, and a victim advocate.
He looked smaller than I remembered.
His wedding ring was gone.
His hands shook.
The prosecutor asked, “Did Vanessa interfere with Lily Carter’s medication?”
Daniel began crying.
“I didn’t know at first.”
My body went cold.
At first.
He continued.
“Vanessa said Brianna needed to understand that family mattered more than work. She said Lily’s illness would scare her into selling part of the company and staying home.”
The victim advocate touched my shoulder.
I could not feel it.
“She said she only delayed one dose,” Daniel whispered. “Just one. She said Lily would recover.”
The prosecutor’s voice hardened.
“And when Lily worsened?”
Daniel covered his face.
“Vanessa panicked. She deleted footage. I helped.”
“Why?”
“Because Brianna would have destroyed us.”
I made a sound.
Not a sob.
Not a scream.
Something worse.
Daniel looked toward the glass.
He could not see me.
Good.
The prosecutor asked, “Did you know Lily’s bracelet was in Vanessa’s apartment?”
“No.”
“Did you plan the assault on Brianna Carter?”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Money. Control. Vanessa said Brianna was emotionally weak around Lily’s anniversary. It was the right time.”
I left the room before I heard more.
In the hallway, I bent over and tried to breathe.
Marcus stood beside me.
Silent.
Loyal.
Priya arrived twenty minutes later and found me sitting on the floor.
“Brianna.”
“I left her with Vanessa,” I whispered.
“No.”
“I left for forty minutes.”
“No.”
“She asked me to go home.”
Priya knelt in front of me.
“Listen to me. A predator used your love against you. That does not make you responsible.”
I wanted to believe her.
I couldn’t yet.
But I let her help me stand.
The charges changed everything.
Daniel and Vanessa were indicted for conspiracy, attempted murder, kidnapping, financial fraud, and obstruction.
Vanessa was charged separately in connection with Lily’s death.
Charles Wynn was arrested for financial conspiracy.
Elaine testified before the grand jury.
Marcus protected the company like a fortress.
And I returned to work because if I stopped moving, grief would swallow me whole.
But I changed one thing.
I turned Lily’s old bedroom into a room of truth.
Not a shrine.
Not untouched pain.
I placed her photos on the wall.
Her drawings.
Her tiny shoes.
Then I added a locked cabinet.
Inside went every document.
Every hospital record.
Every legal filing.
Every piece of evidence.
I would not let them turn my daughter into a whisper.
One night, I sat on the floor in that room and spoke to her.
“I’m sorry I didn’t see it.”
The house stayed quiet.
“I’m going to make them say your name in court.”
For the first time since her funeral, I felt something answer inside me.
May you like
Not peace.
Purpose.
