Chapter 9: The Bloodline Of A Lie
For a long time, I couldn’t speak.
Not because I didn’t have questions.
Because I had too many.
They all crashed together at once.
My father.
David.
Jason.
The company.
The documents.
The surgery.
My entire life suddenly felt like a story someone else had written for me.
And I had just discovered the pages had been edited.
“Say something,” my mother whispered.
I looked at her.
The woman who had raised me.
The woman who had protected me.
The woman who had also hidden the biggest truth of my life.
“Is it true?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
The answer was quiet.
But it destroyed me.
“David is my biological father?””
She nodded.
I stood there, waiting for anger.
Waiting to scream.
But instead, I felt empty.
A strange emptiness that comes when something you believed your entire life disappears.
“Why?””
My mother closed her eyes.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
“Everything.””
She sat down.
I remained standing.
“I was young. Your father and I were already struggling. The business was failing. We were fighting constantly.””
She looked at the floor.
“David was my friend.””
I swallowed.
“Your friend?””
“Yes.””
The way she said it told me there was more.
“How?””
She took a shaky breath.
“David was there when your father was always working. He listened to me. He made me feel like someone cared.””
I looked away.
I didn’t want to hear it.
Not because I blamed her.
Because it was too much.
“Did Dad know?””
My mother nodded.
“Eventually.””
My heart tightened.
“And he still raised me?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
A tear fell down her cheek.
“Because he loved you.””
That sentence hurt more than anything.
Because suddenly I wasn’t only grieving the father I thought abandoned me.
I was grieving the father who stayed.
The father who chose me.
The father who raised me even after learning the truth.
“Then why did Jason say it?””
My mother looked confused.
“What?””
“Why would Jason use this against me?””
She was silent.
Then she whispered:
“Because he knew it would break you.””
I looked at her.
And I realized something.
Jason didn’t reveal the truth because he cared.
He revealed it because he wanted control.
He wanted to hurt us.
He wanted us distracted.
While we were drowning in emotions, he could continue searching.
The thought made my blood run cold.
“Mom.””
“Yes?””
“What was Jason looking for?””
She looked at the computer upstairs.
“The evidence.””
“But what evidence?””
My mother shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
I walked toward the stairs.
“Then we find out.””
The attic felt different this time.
Not like a place filled with old memories.
Like a crime scene.
Every object had a purpose.
Every hidden box had a reason.
My father hadn’t saved these things because he was sentimental.
He saved them because he knew someone would come looking.
I opened the files again.
The folder names stared back at me.
Financial records.
Emails.
Photos.
Then I noticed something I had missed before.
A locked folder.
The name:
*For Emily Only.*
My hands froze.
“Mom.””
She came closer.
“What?””
I pointed.
Her face changed.
“Open it.””
I clicked.
A video file appeared.
Created twenty years ago.
My heart started racing.
I pressed play.
The screen flickered.
Then my father appeared.
Older.
Tired.
But smiling.
For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.
I hadn’t seen his face moving in twenty years.
“Emily,” he said.
My eyes immediately filled with tears.
“If you’re watching this, then something happened.””
I covered my mouth.
His voice continued.
“I wish I could be there when you hear this.””
A pause.
“I wish I could explain everything myself.””
My mother started crying beside me.
My father looked directly into the camera.
“First, I need you to know one thing.””
He smiled sadly.
“You were never a mistake.””
The words broke something inside me.
“I know you may have questions about your mother and David.””
I looked at my mother.
“But those questions are not the most important thing.””
My father leaned closer.
“The most important thing is this: I chose you.””
My tears fell.
“I knew the truth before you were born.””
The room became silent.
“I knew Emily wasn’t biologically mine.””
My mother covered her face.
“But she was mine in every way that mattered.””
I stopped the video for a second.
I couldn’t continue.
My father’s voice was too much.
The man I thought left me…
had spent his last days protecting me.
My mother touched my shoulder.
“Keep watching.””
I pressed play.
My father continued.
“Jason found out about David and Emily’s birth records.””
My breathing changed.
“He used that information to threaten us.””
There it was.
The connection.
“Jason believed if he exposed the truth, he could destroy our family.””
My father looked away.
“But he didn’t understand something.””
A small smile.
“Families are not built by blood.””
I cried silently.
“They are built by the people who stay.””
Then his expression changed.
Serious.
“Jason and David are working together.””
My mother gasped.
The video continued.
“They have been moving money from the company for years. I found the evidence.””
My father lifted a folder.
“But there is something else.””
He paused.
“Something much worse.””
My hands tightened.
“David is not just after money.””
The screen flickered.
“He wants control.””
My father looked directly into the camera.
“And Jason is willing to do anything to get it.””
The video stopped.
A loading symbol appeared.
Then the final message came.
*File corrupted.*
“No.””
I clicked again.
Nothing.
My mother stared.
“That’s all?””
“No.””
I checked the folder.
There was another file.
An audio recording.
Created the same day.
I pressed play.
At first, there was only static.
Then voices.
My father.
And Jason.
My blood turned cold.
“You don’t understand what you’re doing,” my father said.
Jason’s younger voice replied:
“You’re the one who doesn’t understand.””
“I raised you like my own son.””
A pause.
“And this is how you repay me?””
Jason laughed.
“You always thought you were better than me.””
“No.””
“You had the family. The respect. The life.””
Jason’s voice became bitter.
“And I had to watch you get everything.””
I looked at my mother.
She was frozen.
Then my father said something that made my heart stop.
“Jason, you’re making a mistake.””
Jason replied:
“No.””
A pause.
“I’m correcting one.””
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Because we all understood.
Jason wasn’t just helping David.
He wasn’t just stealing.
He had spent twenty years carrying resentment.
Twenty years waiting.
Twenty years planning.
Then my phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
A message.
I opened it.
A picture appeared.
Tyler.
Standing outside the school gate.
Taken that morning.
My blood froze.
Underneath the picture were words.
*You should have stopped looking.*
I grabbed my phone.
Another message appeared.
*Now I need the evidence.*
Then one final line.
*Or your son learns what happened to your father.*
I dropped the phone.
My mother grabbed my arm.
“What is it?””
I looked at her.
And for the first time, I wasn’t afraid of the secrets anymore.
I was afraid of what Jason would do next.
Because he had stopped trying to hide.
May you like
He had taken my son.
And he had just made his final mistake.
