Chapter 7

Two days after we visited Linda, Vanessa found me.

I was in the grocery store parking lot, loading bags into the trunk. I turned around and she was standing there.

She looked different without the party dress. Jeans. Sunglasses. Ordinary. But her eyes were anything but ordinary.

"You've been busy," she said.

I stepped back. My heart was hammering. "Stay away from me."

"Or what?" She smiled. It didn't reach her eyes. "You'll run to the police? Please. My husband's lawyers will tear your little girl apart on the stand. Four years old. Suggestible. Confused. Nobody will believe her."

"Leo will believe her. Maria will believe her. Linda will believe her."

Her smile vanished.

"Linda," she repeated. "You went to Linda."

"Emily knew how to swim, Vanessa."

Her hand twitched. For a second, I thought she was going to hit me.

"You have no idea what you're dealing with," she said, her voice low and dangerous. "You think you're protecting your daughter? You're putting her in danger. Little girls who talk too much sometimes have... accidents. You should think about that."

I stared at her. "Is that a threat?"

"It's advice." She stepped closer. "Take it. Drop this. Move away. Start over. Or you will regret every single day that you ever pointed a finger at me."

She turned and walked away.

I stood there, frozen, until she was gone. Then I called Detective Ortiz.

That night, someone threw a rock through our front window.

It crashed through the glass while May was sleeping. I heard the sound and ran. Daniel ran past me, to the front door. Outside, a car peeled away.

The rock had a note tied to it. Two words.

"STOP NOW."

Daniel called the police. They dusted for prints. They took the rock. But they said without a witness, it was hard to trace.

We didn't sleep that night.

The next morning, we put May and Leo in the car and drove them to my sister's house, three hours away. Maria came with them. Daniel and I stayed behind.

"We can't let them win," I said.

"We won't," Daniel said. But his eyes were worried.

For two weeks, we lived in fear. Every car that passed our house felt like a threat. Every phone call made my heart race. Daniel got threatening letters. My tires were slashed once.

Then Detective Ortiz called.

"We got a warrant," she said. "We searched the Hales' estate. We found Vanessa's journals. Six years of them. She wrote about it. The anger. The urges. The things she did to children when nobody was watching. Daniel — she wrote about Emily. She wrote about Leo. She even wrote about a little girl at a Christmas party who 'wouldn't stop crying.' Your daughter."

I felt my knees go weak.

"And the rock," she continued. "The one through your window. We got a partial print on the note. It matches one of Richard's associates. We're arresting him for witness tampering. And Vanessa — we're arresting her tomorrow."

I dropped the phone. I couldn't breathe.

Daniel caught me. He held me while I shook.

"It's over," he whispered. "It's finally over."

But it wasn't over. Not yet.
