Chapter 5: The Mistress Had Her Own Secret

Vanessa called me at 9:17 the next morning.

I almost let it go to voicemail.

Then I remembered the look on her face when she saw the authorization form.

I answered.

"What?""

"Claire, please don't hang up.""

"Why are you calling me?""

"I need to explain something.""

I looked out the hotel window.

Cars moved through the morning traffic. A delivery driver was unloading boxes outside a restaurant.

"Then explain.""

"Not over the phone.""

I laughed softly.

"You seem to have a habit of asking me to meet privately after doing business behind my back.""

"I know.""

"Where?""

"There's a hotel café near the financial district. Can you come at eleven?""

I hesitated.

"Is Mark going to be there?""

"No.""

"Are you sure?""

"Yes.""

I considered calling Rachel first.

Then I remembered her advice.

Don't confront. Preserve evidence. Let the attorneys handle the legal matters.

"I'll meet you," I said.

"But I'm not signing anything, and I'm not making promises.""

"I understand.""

Vanessa was already seated when I arrived.

Without the expensive coat and confident smile, she looked different.

Her hair was tied back. Her hands were wrapped around a cup of coffee she hadn't touched.

I sat opposite her.

"Talk.""

She glanced toward the entrance.

"Did Mark tell you about the investment company?""

"Which one?""

"Reed Property Solutions.""

"Yes.""

She nodded slowly.

"I own it.""

"I know.""

"He told me he wanted to create a property investment business. He said he had experience, connections, and investors ready to participate.""

"And you believed him?""

"At first.""

She looked down.

"He was charming. He knew exactly what to say. He made me feel like I was building something important with him.""

I said nothing.

Vanessa opened her handbag and removed a folder.

"I brought copies of some emails.""

She placed them on the table.

I didn't touch them immediately.

"Why?""

"Because I think Mark has been lying to both of us.""

I studied her face.

"You're surprised?""

She flinched.

"I know how this looks.""

"It looks like you moved into my house while I was still married to the man you were sleeping with.""

Her cheeks reddened.

"I know.""

"You told me to change my curtains.""

"I shouldn't have said that.""

"You also told me I had until Sunday to leave.""

Vanessa looked down.

"Mark told me the house had already been transferred into his name.""

I stared at her.

"How could you believe that?""

"He showed me a document.""

"With my signature?""

She nodded.

I leaned back.

"Then you knew.""

"Not at first. I thought you had signed it. He told me the divorce had been discussed for months and that you were aware of everything.""

I opened the folder.

Inside were printed emails between Mark and Vanessa.

One message from Mark read:

Claire doesn't need to know about the development financing until everything is finalized. Once the divorce is complete, the property will be much easier to manage.

Another said:

My wife is sentimental. She'll agree to whatever makes the process quicker.

I felt my jaw tighten.

Sentimental.

That's what he'd called the woman who had spent six years paying bills, supporting him, and preserving the home he now wanted to use as collateral.

I turned another page.

A message dated two months earlier caught my attention.

Your company needs to receive the funds first. I'll move the money through the development account, then settle the outstanding obligations.

"Outstanding obligations," I repeated.

Vanessa nodded.

"That's what he called them.""

"What are they?""

"Debts.""

"Whose debts?""

She hesitated.

"His. And some of mine.""

I looked up.

"How much?""

"Approximately four hundred thousand dollars.""

I stared at her.

"Four hundred thousand?""

She nodded.

"Most of it came from a failed investment project.""

"And Mark promised to pay it off using my house?""

"He said the loan would cover everything.""

I closed the folder.

"Vanessa, did you know the signature was forged?""

She looked directly at me.

"Not until last night.""

"Why should I believe you?""

"Because I have messages proving that he told me you agreed to the loan. I also have the original email where he asked the broker to reproduce your signature.""

I didn't move.

She took out her phone.

"Look.""

The message was from Mark.

Make sure Claire's signature looks consistent with the property documents. She won't inspect every page.

I felt the air leave my lungs.

Vanessa watched me.

"I saved it because I didn't trust him.""

"Then why didn't you tell me before?""

She looked away.

"Because I was in love with him.""

The words sat between us.

I almost felt sorry for her.

Almost.

Then I remembered walking into my kitchen and finding her standing beside Mark, criticizing my curtains.

"Did you know he was married when the relationship started?""

Vanessa nodded.

"Yes.""

"Did you know I was still living in the house?""

"Yes.""

"Then don't ask me to feel sorry for you.""

She swallowed.

"I deserve that.""

I pushed the folder back toward her.

"Give everything to your attorney. Rachel can communicate with them.""

"Will you help me?""

I stared at her.

"Help you with what?""

"Mark has been telling people I'm responsible for the loan application. He says I prepared the documents and submitted them without his knowledge.""

My eyes narrowed.

"Is that true?""

"No. He gave me the documents and asked me to submit them through my company account. He said you had authorized everything.""

"Did you?""

"I submitted the application, but I didn't create the signature.""

I studied her carefully.

"You still participated.""

She lowered her head.

"Yes.""

"Then you'll need to answer for that.""

She nodded.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she said something I hadn't expected.

"Claire, I think he planned to marry me.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"He said once the divorce was finalized, we'd move into a new house. He showed me pictures of properties in California.""

I almost laughed.

"With what money?""

"The development financing.""

I shook my head.

"Of course.""

She leaned forward.

"There's something else. He told me your grandmother left you a much larger inheritance than you admitted.""

I froze.

"How would he know that?""

"He said he'd been reviewing old financial records. He thought there might be additional assets.""

I looked at her.

"What else did he say?""

Vanessa hesitated.

"He mentioned a safe deposit box.""

My heart skipped.

I remembered my grandmother's old bank account.

After her death, I'd collected her personal belongings and transferred most of the inheritance into my own accounts.

But there had been one small safe deposit box.

I hadn't opened it in years.

"What was he looking for?"" I asked.

Vanessa shook her head.

"He didn't tell me.""

I closed the folder.

"Thank you for the information.""

"Claire—"

I stood.

"Don't contact me again unless it's through the attorneys.""

She nodded.

I walked toward the exit.

Behind me, Vanessa called out.

"One more thing!""

I turned.

She looked frightened.

"Mark knows about the lottery.""

My blood ran cold.

"What?""

"He mentioned it last night. He said something about you checking numbers and becoming suddenly confident.""

I stared at her.

"Did you tell him?""

"No. He said he saw you looking at something on your phone the night before he came home.""

I felt my pulse quicken.

He didn't know I'd won.

Not yet.

But he knew something had changed.

And if he discovered the truth, he might become even more dangerous.

Rachel was waiting when I arrived at her office.

I handed her the folder.

She read the messages in silence.

Then she looked up.

"Did Vanessa tell you she submitted the loan application?""

"Yes.""

"Did she admit she knew the signature was forged?""

"She said she discovered it afterward.""

Rachel wrote something down.

"We'll need to verify that. Her statements are potentially useful, but she may also be trying to protect herself.""

"I understand.""

I told her about the safe deposit box.

Rachel paused.

"Where is it?""

"At the bank my grandmother used.""

"Do you have access?""

"I believe so.""

"Then let's establish exactly what is inside before anyone else gets involved. Don't allow Mark to retrieve anything.""

I nodded.

Then I told her about the lottery.

Not the amount.

Just the fact that Mark might suspect I had some new source of money.

Rachel's expression became serious.

"Has he contacted you about your finances?""

"Not directly.""

"Keep it that way. We should also discuss personal security and account access. Change your passwords from a secure device, and don't use shared recovery information.""

I followed her instructions.

Before leaving, I asked one final question.

"Can we stop the loan?""

"We have already sent a formal dispute to the lender. We are also preparing the necessary legal filings. I cannot promise an immediate outcome, but we have grounds to challenge the transaction.""

I stood.

"Good.""

Rachel looked at me carefully.

"Claire, are you planning to return to the house?""

"I need to collect a few more things.""

"Then coordinate the visit. Don't go alone if you think there may be a confrontation.""

I agreed.

As I stepped into the elevator, my phone rang.

Mark.

I answered.

"What?""

His voice sounded unusually gentle.

"Claire, we need to talk.""

"About what?""

"About us.""

I almost pressed the end-call button.

Then he continued.

"I think we both said things we didn't mean.""

I stared at the elevator doors.

"You brought Vanessa home.""

"I know.""

"You told me to leave.""

"I was angry.""

"You asked me to surrender my house.""

He sighed.

"Can we meet for dinner? Just the two of us.""

I almost laughed.

"Why?""

"Because I still care about you.""

For six years, I would have believed him.

I would have rushed home.

I would have prepared dinner.

I would have tried to understand what I'd done wrong.

But now I knew about the forged signature.

The missing money.

The false loan application.

And the secret meeting with my mother.

"Where?"" I asked.

"At home. Tomorrow night.""

I looked at my reflection in the elevator doors.

"Fine.""

He sounded relieved.

"Good. I knew you'd come around.""

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Then a message appeared from an unknown number.

Don't go home tomorrow. Mark has already arranged for someone to come over.

May you like

A second message followed.

And this time, he's not planning to ask you to leave.
