Chapter 4: The Secret My Mother Took to Her Grave
The front door shook again.
This time, the sound was louder.
The old wooden frame cracked under the force of the impact.
My father grabbed my arm.
“Back room. Now.””
I stared at him.
For years, I had imagined my father returning.
In every version of that fantasy, he apologized.
He explained.
He told me he was sorry.
But I never imagined standing beside him while someone tried to break into our childhood home.
I never imagined seeing fear in his eyes.
“Who are they?”” I whispered.
Raúl looked toward the front door.
“The people who have been searching for this house for eight years.””
The words hit me.
Eight years.
They weren't here because of Beatriz.
They weren't here because of the kidnapping.
They had been waiting.
Watching.
Looking for whatever my mother had hidden.
My father pushed me toward the hallway.
“Move.””
We ran.
The sound of wood breaking followed us.
Someone was inside.
I could hear footsteps.
Multiple people.
My father opened a hidden panel behind the old kitchen cabinet.
I didn't even know it existed.
“Your mother built this with me,” he said.
I froze.
“She knew?””
He looked at me.
“She knew everything.””
The hidden door opened into a narrow space behind the walls.
A passage.
I stared.
As a child, I thought my house had secrets.
I just never imagined they were real.
My father pushed the documents into my hands.
“Take these.””
“What about you?””
He looked at me.
“I'll slow them down.””
I almost laughed.
The same man who disappeared from my life was standing there trying to sacrifice himself.
I didn't know what to feel.
Anger.
Pain.
Confusion.
All of it mixed together.
“You always do that,” I said.
His expression changed.
“Do what?””
“Leave.””
The words came out quietly.
For a moment, my father looked like he had been punched.
Then footsteps sounded closer.
Someone shouted from the living room.
“Raúl! We know you're here!””
My father closed his eyes.
Then he whispered:
“I deserved that.””
I didn't expect those words.
Not from him.
He touched the side of my face.
The same way he did when I was a child.
“I wanted to come back every day.””
I looked away.
“Wanting isn't enough.””
“I know.””
The honesty hurt more.
He opened the hidden door wider.
“Go.””
I didn't move.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“Because your mother made me promise.””
“Promise what?””
“That you would hate me if it meant you stayed alive.””
I stopped.
The sentence felt impossible.
My mother chose this?
My father saw the confusion on my face.
“She knew you would spend your life searching for answers. She knew your heart.””
He swallowed.
“She also knew Mauricio would use you to get to me.””
A loud crash came from the other room.
They were getting closer.
My father pushed me into the passage.
“Diego, listen.””
I looked back.
“For the first time in eight years, I'm asking you to trust me.””
I wanted to say no.
I wanted to tell him he had no right.
But the truth was, I didn't know anything anymore.
Not about him.
Not about my mother.
Not about the people chasing us.
I moved through the narrow passage.
My father closed the door behind me.
The darkness swallowed me.
For several seconds, I heard nothing.
Then voices.
A man's voice.
“Where is the boy?””
Another voice answered.
“Raúl won't tell us.””
A pause.
Then a colder voice spoke.
“Then make him.””
I stopped breathing.
Mauricio.
I had never met him.
But somehow, hearing his voice made me understand why everyone feared him.
It wasn't loud.
It wasn't angry.
It was calm.
Like hurting people was just another business decision.
I moved forward through the passage.
The walls were tight.
Dust filled my lungs.
At the end was another door.
I pushed it open and stepped outside behind the house.
The garden was overgrown.
The same place where my mother used to plant roses.
I looked back at the house.
Part of me wanted to go back.
To help my father.
But another part knew something.
He didn't bring me here to save him.
He brought me here to find the truth.
I ran.
I didn't stop until I reached the street.
Only then did I realize I was holding the USB drive from the metal box.
The evidence.
The thing everyone wanted.
My phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
I stared at the screen.
Then answered.
“Hello?””
A familiar voice responded.
Not my father.
Not Elena.
Beatriz.
“Diego?””
My entire body froze.
“Mrs. Alcántara?””
Her breathing was weak.
But she was alive.
“Listen to me carefully.””
I looked around.
“Where are you?””
“I don't know.””
Her voice trembled.
“They moved me twice.””
I gripped the phone.
“Who has you?””
Silence.
Then she whispered:
“Mauricio.””
I closed my eyes.
“I know.””
“No.””
Her voice became urgent.
“You don't understand.””
“What?””
“Mauricio isn't trying to take my company.””
I frowned.
“Then what does he want?””
A pause.
Then she said:
“He wants something your mother hid.””
My heart stopped.
“My mother?””
“Yes.””
I looked at the USB drive.
“What was my mother involved in?””
Beatriz took a shaky breath.
“Your mother discovered that Mauricio wasn't just stealing money.””
The line became quiet.
“What was he doing?””
Her answer came slowly.
“He was buying people.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Who?””
“Everyone who could stop him.””
I thought about my father.
The threats.
The disappearance.
The criminals.
Then Beatriz said something that made my blood run cold.
“Diego…”
“Yes?””
“Your father wasn't the only person who disappeared because of Mauricio.””
I waited.
“There were others.””
“Who?””
Her voice lowered.
“People who tried to expose him.””
The call suddenly became distorted.
“Beatriz?””
Static.
Then her voice returned one final time.
“Diego, you need to find the woman who helped your mother hide the evidence.””
“Who?””
The answer was barely a whisper.
“Her name is Elena.””
The call ended.
I stood frozen.
Elena.
The woman who called me from the hidden phone.
The woman who warned me not to trust someone.
Before I could process it, another notification appeared.
A message.
From the same unknown number.
This time, it wasn't Elena.
It was a photo.
My father.
Inside the house.
Surrounded by the men who broke in.
His hands were tied.
Below the image were five words.
*Come back if you want answers.*
My stomach dropped.
Then another message appeared.
*Bring the USB.*
I stared at the screen.
They knew I had it.
Someone had been watching me from the beginning.
The forest.
The house.
Everything.
I looked at the road ahead.
Then back at the house behind me.
For eight years, I wanted my father to come back.
Now he was back.
And now someone had taken him away again.
But this time, I wasn't eleven years old.
I wasn't helpless.
I had the evidence.
I had my mother's final message.
And I finally knew who I was fighting.
I turned around.
And walked back toward the house.
May you like
Because if Mauricio wanted the truth buried…
I was going to bring it into the light.
