Chapter 7: The Hidden Wing

I stared at the message until the words blurred.

*COME ALONE, OR THEY BOTH LEAVE IN BODY BAGS.*

For a moment, I couldn't move.

The hallway around me continued like nothing had happened.

A nurse pushed a medication cart past the doorway.

A resident laughed somewhere down the corridor.

A television played softly in the common room.

The entire world kept moving.

But mine had stopped.

Mrs. Carter.

Ruth.

Two elderly women who had trusted me because nobody else listened.

And now someone was using their lives to force me into a trap.

Henry watched my face.

"What happened?""

I locked my phone.

"Nothing.""

He immediately shook his head.

"Don't lie to me.""

I looked at him.

He was old.

Tired.

Weak.

But he had survived this place longer than anyone.

So I told him.

Not everything.

Just enough.

"They have Mrs. Carter and Ruth.""

His face lost color.

"Where?""

"Mango Grove.""

He closed his eyes.

"No.""

"You know it.""

"Walter's warning.""

"What warning?""

Henry looked toward the window.

"He told Evelyn never to go near that place.""

"Why?""

"Because Mango Grove wasn't abandoned.""

I leaned closer.

"What do you mean?""

Henry's voice became barely audible.

"It was hidden.""

I left Henry's room and went straight to the bathroom.

I needed five minutes alone.

Five minutes to think.

Five minutes to stop reacting.

Because that was exactly what Victor wanted.

Fear.

Panic.

Mistakes.

I pulled out the flash drive hidden in my shoe.

I had copied everything from the bank.

The evidence.

The names.

The documents.

If I disappeared, someone needed to have it.

I needed someone outside Palm Harbor.

Someone Victor couldn't control.

I thought about Thomas.

He was careful.

Maybe too careful.

But he was the only person who knew the history behind all of this.

I called him.

He answered immediately.

"Emily.""

His voice sounded tense.

"How did you know it was me?""

"Because nobody else calls me from unknown numbers after I told them not to.""

I ignored the comment.

"They took Ruth.""

Silence.

Then:

"What?""

"She was transported.""

"By Sunset?""

"Yes.""

Thomas exhaled.

"Where?""

"Mango Grove.""

Another silence.

This one was different.

Fear.

"You need to leave.""

"No.""

"Emily.""

"They have Mrs. Carter.""

"I understand.""

"No, you don't.""

My voice cracked.

"She trusted me.""

"That's exactly why you're vulnerable.""

"I can't abandon her.""

"I didn't say abandon her.""

"Then what are you saying?""

Thomas lowered his voice.

"I'm saying this is what they do.""

"What?""

"They create a situation where good people rush in without thinking.""

I looked at the clock.

7:12 PM.

"Do you have a better idea?""

He didn't answer.

That told me everything.

"I need you to help me.""

"Where are you?""

"Palm Harbor.""

"No.""

"Thomas—"

"Don't tell anyone you're leaving.""

"Why?""

"Because if Victor knows you're going there, he won't wait until midnight.""

I gripped my phone.

"Can you meet me?""

"Yes.""

"Where?""

"Five minutes from Mango Grove.""

"Why not come with me?""

A pause.

Then:

"Because I need to do something first.""

"What?""

"I need to make sure someone sees what happens tonight.""

I met Thomas at a gas station twenty minutes away.

He looked different.

No suit.

No briefcase.

Just jeans and a jacket.

He handed me a small device.

"What is that?""

"A recorder.""

I looked at it.

"You want me to record?""

"I want evidence.""

"I already have evidence.""

"Paper evidence.""

He shook his head.

"Victor has spent years controlling paperwork.""

"Then what do we need?""

"People.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"Proof that can't disappear.""

He pointed at the device.

"Voices. Actions. Confessions.""

I understood.

"You think he'll admit something?""

"No.""

Thomas looked toward the road.

"But people like Victor always believe they are untouchable.""

He handed me another item.

A small GPS tracker.

"Put this in your pocket.""

"Why?""

"So someone knows where you are.""

"Someone?""

Thomas hesitated.

"I contacted a friend.""

"What friend?""

"Someone I trust.""

I stared at him.

"Not the police?""

"No.""

That answer scared me.

Mango Grove Recovery Center sat outside the city.

The building looked abandoned.

Broken windows.

Overgrown grass.

A rusted sign hanging near the entrance.

No lights.

No cars.

Nothing.

Exactly the kind of place nobody would investigate.

Thomas parked a mile away.

"You stay here.""

I looked at him.

"No.""

"Emily.""

"We came together.""

"I said I would help you get there.""

"And then?""

"Then you go inside.""

"Alone?""

"Yes.""

I almost laughed.

"You sound exactly like the people who created this problem.""

His face tightened.

"I'm trying to keep you alive.""

"And I'm trying to save two women.""

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he handed me the recorder.

"Fine.""

He looked serious.

"But listen carefully.""

"If anything feels wrong—"

"It already feels wrong.""

"Emily.""

I stopped.

His expression softened.

"Don't be brave.""

I frowned.

"Don't be reckless.""

He looked at the building.

"There's a difference.""

The front entrance was locked.

No surprise.

I walked around the side.

The building was silent.

Too silent.

Then I saw it.

A small path behind the building.

Leading toward a greenhouse.

Henry's words came back.

Behind it.

That's where they were keeping the people nobody was supposed to find.

I pushed the greenhouse door open.

Inside were old plants.

Broken equipment.

Empty shelves.

Nothing.

I almost thought Henry was wrong.

Then I noticed the floor.

One section had fresh dirt.

Recently moved.

I knelt down.

A metal handle was hidden beneath the soil.

My heart started pounding.

A hidden door.

I pulled it open.

A staircase descended underground.

I turned on my flashlight.

At the bottom was a hallway.

Clean.

Modern.

Not abandoned.

Someone had built an entire hidden facility beneath the old building.

I walked slowly.

Rooms lined both sides.

The first one was empty.

The second had medical equipment.

The third had files.

Hundreds of files.

I stepped closer.

Names.

Residents.

Palm Harbor.

My hands went cold.

This wasn't a recovery center.

It was a storage place.

A place where people were kept hidden.

Then I heard a sound.

A cough.

I froze.

Someone was alive.

I followed the noise.

At the end of the hallway was a locked door.

Inside I heard voices.

"Please...""

Mrs. Carter.

I almost cried.

I rushed toward the door.

"Mrs. Carter?""

Silence.

Then:

"Emily?""

I nearly collapsed.

"I'm here.""

I looked through the small window.

Mrs. Carter and Ruth were sitting inside.

Both alive.

Both frightened.

"Are you hurt?""

Ruth shook her head.

"Not yet.""

The words made my stomach drop.

"What does that mean?""

Mrs. Carter looked behind me.

"You're alone?""

I hesitated.

"Yes.""

Her face changed.

"No.""

"What?""

"You shouldn't have come alone.""

"I had to.""

"No.""

Her voice became urgent.

"Emily, you don't understand.""

A sound came from behind me.

A slow clap.

I turned.

Victor Hale stood at the end of the hallway.

Behind him was Richard.

And Karen.

My blood went cold.

Karen looked at me.

But she wasn't smiling.

She looked terrified.

Victor walked closer.

"Impressive.""

I stepped away from the door.

"You kidnapped them.""

Victor tilted his head.

"Such an emotional word.""

"Because it's true.""

He looked at Richard.

"See? This is exactly what I mean.""

Richard sighed.

"She's unstable.""

I stared at him.

"Unstable?""

"You broke into private property.""

"I came to rescue people you stole.""

Victor smiled.

"There it is.""

"What?""

"The hero complex.""

He walked closer.

"You believe you are saving them.""

"I am.""

"No.""

He stopped a few feet away.

"You are exposing them.""

I frowned.

"What are you talking about?""

Victor pointed toward Mrs. Carter.

"Do you know how many families abandon their relatives?""

"That doesn't justify this.""

"No.""

His voice hardened.

"But money does.""

The hallway went silent.

I felt the recorder in my pocket.

Keep him talking.

Victor continued.

"People think elderly care is about compassion.""

He laughed softly.

"It's about assets.""

My stomach turned.

"You moved residents here to steal from them.""

Richard looked uncomfortable.

Victor ignored him.

"We provide what families refuse to provide.""

"You trap them.""

"We manage them.""

"You're monsters.""

Victor smiled.

"Careful.""

He stepped closer.

"Words can become evidence.""

"Good.""

I looked directly at him.

"That's why I'm recording everything.""

For the first time, Victor's expression changed.

A tiny flicker of surprise.

Then he laughed.

"Are you?""

My heart sank.

He knew.

He looked at Karen.

"Search her.""

Karen didn't move.

Victor's eyes narrowed.

"Karen.""

She swallowed.

Then stepped toward me.

"I'm sorry.""

I backed away.

"You knew?""

Her eyes filled with guilt.

"I tried to warn you.""

"But you still brought me here.""

"No.""

She shook her head.

"I didn't.""

Victor looked annoyed.

"Enough.""

Karen suddenly turned toward him.

"No.""

Everyone froze.

Even Victor.

Karen's voice shook.

"But I'm done.""

Victor stared at her.

"Think carefully.""

She looked at Mrs. Carter.

Then at Ruth.

"I've spent years pretending I didn't see.""

She swallowed.

"I'm not doing it anymore.""

Richard stepped forward.

"Karen.""

"No.""

She looked at him.

"Not this time.""

Victor's face became cold.

"You have no idea what you've started.""

Then every light in the underground hallway turned off.

Complete darkness.

A second later, a loud alarm began.

Red emergency lights flashed.

May you like

And Victor whispered:

"Now you will learn what happens to people who betray me.""
