Chapter 6

Victoria posted bail three days later.
By sunset, she was outside the hotel.
Not at the front entrance.
At the service door.
Exactly where Emily used to come in before dawn.
My new guard called me immediately.
“She says she wants her clothes.”
“She wants access,” I said.
“Keep her outside.”
Then Emily appeared behind me.
“I want to see her.”
“No.”
Her eyes flashed.
“You promised to stop deciding for me.”
I hated that she was right.
We met Victoria in the back security office with three cameras recording and Martin beside us.
Victoria walked in wearing sunglasses.
Indoors.
As if shame could be hidden by designer frames.
She looked at Emily first.
Then at her stomach.
“You look tired.”
Emily did not blink.
“You look charged.”
Victoria’s smile vanished.
She turned to me.
“Alexander, this has gone far enough. You are emotional. She is manipulating you.”
I laughed once.
It surprised even me.
“You forged letters, trapped her in poverty, threatened my child, and now manipulation is your defense?”
“She got pregnant on purpose.”
Emily stood.
“Say that again.”
Victoria leaned closer.
“You heard me.”
I stepped between them.
Emily touched my arm.
Not for comfort.
To move me aside.
I stepped back.
Emily’s voice was quiet.
“You took the man I loved. You took my home. You took my name in his phone and made him hate me.”
Victoria crossed her arms.
“I won.”
“No,” Emily said.
“You delayed the truth.”
Victoria’s face twitched.
Then she smiled again.
“You think a baby makes you untouchable?”
Martin stood.
“Careful.”
Victoria ignored him.
“My father knows judges. My mother knows every editor. Alexander knows how bad scandal is for business.”
She looked at me.
“You will settle.”
“No.”
“You always settle.”
“Not this.”
Her eyes hardened.
“Then I’ll make sure no one ever believes her.”
Emily reached into her pocket.
She placed a small recorder on the table.
Victoria stared.
Emily said, “I learned from you.”
Victoria went pale.
“You recorded this?”
“Every word.”
Martin smiled slightly.
“Thank you, Mrs. Cole. Witness intimidation while out on bail is useful.”
Victoria lunged for the recorder.
Security caught her before she reached it.
She screamed my name as they dragged her out.
But that was not the worst part.
The worst part came an hour later.
Nora rushed in with a tablet.
“Mr. Cole, there’s a petition filed in family court.”
“For what?”
She looked at Emily.
“Emergency custody of the unborn child.”
Emily’s knees buckled.
I caught the chair behind her before she fell.
Martin took the tablet.
His face darkened.
“Filed by Victoria?”
“No,” Nora said.
“By Eleanor Cole.”
My mother had done the unthinkable.
She claimed Emily was unstable.
She claimed I was under emotional manipulation.
She claimed the Cole family needed guardianship to protect the baby’s inheritance.
Emily wrapped both arms around herself.
“She’s trying to take my daughter.”
“No,” I said.
But my voice was not enough.
Not anymore.
The hearing was set for the next morning.
Emergency.
Sealed.
Quiet.
Exactly the kind of room where wealthy families stole lives without cameras.
That night, Emily barely slept.
I sat outside her bedroom door because she asked me not to leave.
At 3:00 a.m., she opened it.
Her face was pale.
“What if they win?”
“They won’t.”
“What if money wins?”
I looked up at her.
“Then I will use mine to make truth louder.”
She sank down beside me on the floor.
“I used to dream about telling you I was pregnant.”
My throat closed.
“How did it happen in the dream?”
She looked at her hands.
“I bought tiny shoes. Yellow ones. I put them in a box.”
I smiled sadly.
“I would have cried.”
“You never cried.”
“I would have for that.”
She leaned her head back against the wall.
For a few quiet minutes, there was no court.
No Victoria.
No betrayal.
Just us.
Then my phone rang.
Martin.
His voice was sharp.
“We found the envelope your father sealed before he died.”
I stood.
“What envelope?”
“The one your mother hid.”
A pause.
“Alexander, your father knew someone might try to use your future child to seize control. He left instructions.”
“What instructions?”
May you like
Martin exhaled.
“Bring Emily to court.”
