Chapter 6: The Woman Who Knew More Than She Admitted
The next morning, I woke up before my alarm.
For a few seconds, I forgot where I was.
The room was unfamiliar.
The ceiling was different.
The sunlight came through curtains that weren’t mine.
Then I saw the small overnight bag beside the bed.
And everything came rushing back.
The accident.
The hospital.
Daniel’s phone.
Jenna’s messages.
The confession.
The house I had left behind.
I sat up slowly, pressing my fingers against the bandage on my forehead.
The pain was still there.
But it was no longer the worst thing hurting me.
Emily was already awake when I walked into the kitchen.
She stood by the coffee maker wearing an old sweatshirt, her hair tied messily on top of her head.
She looked at me for a moment.
“You didn’t sleep.””
It wasn’t a question.
I shook my head.
“Not really.””
She poured coffee into a mug and pushed it toward me.
“Did he call?””
“Seven times.””
“Did you answer?””
“No.””
Emily nodded.
“Good.””
I looked at her.
She noticed.
“What?””
“I thought you’d tell me to talk to him.””
She sat across from me.
“I would have.””
I frowned.
“Really?””
“Yes.””
That surprised me.
“Why?””
“Because I think you deserve the truth.””
She took a sip of coffee.
“And the truth isn’t something you get by avoiding the person who hurt you forever.””
I looked down.
“But?””
“But right now, you’re too exhausted to have a conversation with someone who has spent months controlling the story.””
That sentence stayed with me.
Controlling the story.
That was exactly what Daniel had done.
He didn’t just hide what happened.
He decided what version of reality I was allowed to live in.
At 9:17 a.m., there was a knock on the door.
Emily and I both looked up.
Neither of us spoke.
Then the knock came again.
Three slow taps.
My stomach tightened.
I already knew.
Emily stood.
“Stay here.””
“I’m okay.””
“I know.””
She walked toward the door.
Then she looked back.
“But you don’t have to be strong every second.””
I watched her open it.
Daniel stood on the porch.
He looked nothing like the man who left our house yesterday morning.
His shirt was wrinkled.
His hair was messy.
His eyes looked exhausted.
In his hand was a small envelope.
“Claire?””
I stood up.
Emily stepped aside.
But she didn’t leave.
Daniel noticed.
“I need to talk to her.””
Emily crossed her arms.
“She’ll decide that.””
He nodded.
“I understand.””
That surprised me.
Usually, Daniel hated being challenged.
But today, he looked like someone who had finally run out of ways to control the situation.
“Why are you here?”” I asked.
He looked at the envelope.
“Because there’s something you need to see.””
My first instinct was suspicion.
Not curiosity.
Not hope.
Suspicion.
“What is it?””
He handed it to me.
“I found this in my car.””
I looked at the envelope but didn’t open it.
“What is inside?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Documents.””
“What kind of documents?””
“From Jenna.””
My eyes lifted.
“Why would you have documents from Jenna?””
His expression changed.
“Because she left them in my car.””
Emily looked at me.
I opened the envelope.
Inside were printed emails.
Several pages.
The first one had a date from three months earlier.
Before the conference.
Before everything fell apart.
I read the first few lines.
And immediately felt confused.
The email was from Jenna.
To Daniel.
The subject line:
*About Claire.*
My heartbeat changed.
I kept reading.
I don’t think you understand what you’re doing.
I looked up.
Daniel’s face was pale.
“What is this?””
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
I continued reading.
You keep telling yourself this is about friendship, but it isn’t fair to her.
My fingers tightened around the paper.
Another line.
She trusts you completely.
I stopped.
The words felt strange.
Because they weren’t the words of someone trying to steal my husband.
They were the words of someone warning him.
I looked at Daniel.
“What is this?””
He sat down slowly.
“I found it this morning.””
“And you didn’t know about it?””
“No.””
“Then why did she send this?””
He looked away.
“I don’t know.””
For once, I believed him.
And that scared me.
Because it meant the story was becoming more complicated.
I kept reading.
The emails were a conversation between Daniel and Jenna.
At first, Daniel’s messages were defensive.
You’re overreacting.
Claire and I have problems.
You don’t understand our marriage.
Then Jenna’s responses changed.
No, Daniel. I understand enough.
You talk about your wife like she’s a stranger.
You say you love her, but you keep looking for reasons to betray her.
I stopped.
Betray her.
The words felt heavier coming from Jenna than they had coming from me.
“Did she know about us?”” I asked.
Daniel looked confused.
“What?””
“Did Jenna know you were married?””
“Yes.””
“Did she know you loved me?””
His silence was answer enough.
I stared at him.
“Daniel.””
“Yes.””
“She knew.””
“Yes.””
“And she still…”
He closed his eyes.
“I know.””
The room became quiet.
Because now there were two betrayals.
His.
And hers.
The last page was different.
It wasn’t an email.
It was a printed message.
A text conversation.
Daniel’s name appeared at the top.
The date was the night of my accident.
My hands went cold.
I read.
*Jenna: You can’t keep doing this.*
*Daniel: I’m trying to fix everything.*
*Jenna: By lying to her?*
*Daniel: I don’t know what to do.*
*Jenna: Then tell her the truth.*
*Daniel: I can’t lose my marriage.*
*Jenna: You already damaged it.*
I stopped reading.
The room felt smaller.
Because suddenly, I realized something.
Daniel’s betrayal wasn’t as simple as I wanted it to be.
I wanted him to be a villain.
A person I could hate.
A person who made my decision easy.
But real life was crueler than that.
Sometimes people could hurt you deeply and still have moments where they knew they were wrong.
Sometimes people could regret something and still do it.
I looked at Daniel.
“Why didn’t you show me this before?””
His eyes lowered.
“Because I was ashamed.””
“Of what?””
“Everything.””
He looked at me.
“I was ashamed that I let it happen.””
“Let what happen?””
He swallowed.
“The attention. The messages. The feeling that someone else was interested in me.””
His voice cracked.
“I liked feeling wanted.””
The honesty hurt.
But it was better than another excuse.
“I was selfish,” he said.
“Yes.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
That afternoon, I asked Daniel to leave.
Not because I hated him.
Because I needed space to understand what I was feeling.
After he left, I sat at Emily’s kitchen table with the papers spread out in front of me.
Emily read them silently.
Finally, she looked up.
“This changes things.””
I stared at the documents.
“Does it?””
“I don’t know.””
Neither did I.
Because the truth was complicated.
Daniel had hurt me.
There was no question.
But Jenna’s messages created another question.
Why?
Why would someone who had been involved with my husband warn him not to hurt me?
What was she hiding?
My phone buzzed.
I looked down.
Unknown number.
A message.
*Claire, I need to tell you the real reason I got close to Daniel.*
I froze.
Another message followed.
*It wasn’t because I wanted your husband.*
I stared at the screen.
Then the final message appeared.
*I was trying to find out what he had done before I met you.*
My breath caught.
I read it again.
Then again.
Because suddenly, the story I thought I knew changed completely.
Jenna wasn’t just a woman who entered my marriage.
May you like
She had been searching for something.
And whatever she discovered about Daniel was something he was desperate to hide.
