Chapter 5: The Person Standing Beside My Mother
I stared at the photo on my phone until my eyes started to hurt.
I knew the person standing beside my mother.
That was the worst part.
Because if it had been a stranger, someone I had never met, maybe I could have convinced myself this was some misunderstanding.
But it wasn’t.
The man standing next to Teresa in front of my house that morning was someone who had been at my family’s table.
Someone who had held Frederick.
Someone who had smiled at me while knowing exactly what was happening.
My uncle, Richard.
My mother’s older brother.
Amy looked over my shoulder.
“Who is that?””
I swallowed.
“My uncle.””
Her expression changed.
“The one who was at the party?””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
The storage unit suddenly felt smaller.
The walls seemed closer.
I looked around at the boxes filled with my family’s private information.
The documents.
The photos.
The plans.
And now another person connected to it.
“How long has this been happening?”” Amy whispered.
I didn’t answer.
Because I didn’t know.
And that scared me more than anything.
The phone was still in my hand.
Daniel was still on the line.
“Why did you send me this?””
A long silence followed.
Then his voice came through.
“Because I made a mistake.””
I frowned.
“What mistake?””
“I thought Teresa was just trying to protect herself.””
Amy stepped closer.
“Who are you?””
The man hesitated.
“My name is Daniel Hayes.””
I looked at the emails again.
The same name.
The person my mother had been communicating with.
“You were helping her.””
His breathing changed.
“Yes.””
Amy looked at me.
I could see the anger in her face.
“You knew?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“You knew what she was doing to me?””
His voice became quieter.
“I knew some of it.””
Amy laughed bitterly.
“Some of it?””
She took the phone from my hand.
“You let her treat me like a servant?””
“Mrs. Bradley—”
“No.””
Her voice shook.
“You don’t get to call me that.””
A pause.
Then Daniel said something unexpected.
“I’m sorry.””
Amy froze.
Because apologies were not what we expected.
Not from someone involved.
“Sorry doesn’t fix this,” she said.
“I know.””
“Then tell us the truth.””
Another silence.
Then:
“Meet me tonight.””
I immediately shook my head.
“No.””
Amy looked at me.
Daniel continued.
“If you want to understand why Teresa chose Frederick’s birthday, you need to hear everything.””
I tightened my grip.
“Why should I trust you?””
“You shouldn’t.””
That answer surprised me.
“I’m not asking you to trust me.””
His voice became serious.
“I’m asking you to listen.””
Then the call ended.
On the drive home, neither Amy nor I spoke much.
There was too much information.
Too many questions.
My mother had spent months building a plan.
But why?
She already had my trust.
She already had access to my money.
She already had influence over my decisions.
Why go further?
When we arrived home, Frederick was asleep in his crib.
I stood in the doorway watching him.
His tiny fingers were wrapped around his blanket.
Completely innocent.
Completely unaware.
A few feet away, my mother had been planning how to control his parents.
I felt something break inside me.
Amy stood beside me.
“He looks peaceful.””
I nodded.
“He has no idea.””
She looked at me.
“Neither did we.””
That sentence stayed with me.
Because she was right.
For months, we thought we were building a family.
But someone else was trying to take ownership of it.
That evening, I received another message.
From Daniel.
An address.
A small coffee shop downtown.
I showed Amy.
“I’m going.””
She immediately shook her head.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because this is dangerous.””
“Dangerous?””
She pointed at the phone.
“Connor, these people have been watching us.””
I knew she was right.
But I also knew we needed answers.
“I won’t go alone.””
She looked surprised.
“You want me to come?””
“I want my wife beside me.””
Her eyes softened.
After everything.
After all the times she felt like she was standing alone.
I hoped those words meant something.
“I’m coming.””
The coffee shop was almost empty.
Daniel sat in the corner.
He looked nothing like I expected.
He wasn’t intimidating.
He wasn’t threatening.
He looked tired.
Like someone who hadn’t slept in weeks.
When we approached, he stood.
“Connor.””
I stopped.
“You know who I am.””
He nodded.
“I know a lot about you.””
I didn’t sit.
“That’s exactly the problem.””
Daniel looked down.
“I understand.””
Amy crossed her arms.
“Start talking.””
He took a breath.
“Teresa has always been good at convincing people she is helping them.””
I said nothing.
“She did it with your father.””
My expression changed.
“My father?””
Daniel nodded.
“She controlled his finances too.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“My father died when I was twenty.””
“I know.””
“What does he have to do with this?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Everything.””
He reached into his folder and placed a document on the table.
I picked it up.
The name at the top made me freeze.
*Thomas Bradley.*
My father.
I read the first page.
It was an old financial report.
Then I saw something.
Transfers.
Large amounts.
Sent to an account controlled by Teresa.
“This…”
My voice stopped.
Daniel nodded.
“Your father thought he was helping your mother manage money.””
Amy looked at me.
The same realization hit both of us.
“She did this before.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
I stared at the document.
“My whole life?””
“She has been controlling the narrative for years.””
I felt sick.
All the memories I had of my childhood suddenly looked different.
My mother had always told me my father was careless with money.
That she was the reason we survived.
That she sacrificed everything.
But what if that wasn’t true?
“Why are you telling me this now?””
Daniel looked away.
“Because I helped her.””
Amy’s expression hardened.
“Why?””
He looked ashamed.
“Because I thought she was protecting herself.””
“That’s not an answer.””
He nodded.
“You’re right.””
He folded his hands.
“Teresa told me you were going to abandon her.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“She said Amy was trying to take you away from your family.””
I almost laughed.
“She convinced you of that?””
“Yes.””
Daniel looked down.
“She showed me messages. She showed me situations that made Amy look cruel.””
Amy shook her head.
“She edited everything.””
Daniel nodded.
“I know that now.””
“How?””
He looked directly at me.
“Because I saw her create one.””
The room went silent.
“What did she create?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then he answered.
“The hospital incident.””
Amy’s face went pale.
“What?””
Daniel looked at her.
“The bill. The emergency account. The story that you couldn’t handle finances.””
My hands tightened.
“Explain.””
Daniel took a deep breath.
“Teresa moved money from your account into another account. Then she created the situation where Amy looked irresponsible.””
Amy whispered:
“She made it look like I needed her.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
I stood up.
Anger flooded through me.
“She used my wife.””
“Yes.””
“She used my money.””
“Yes.””
“She used my family.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Yes.””
Then he said the one thing I wasn’t ready to hear.
“But Connor, the money was never the main goal.””
I stared at him.
“What was?””
Daniel reached into his folder.
He pulled out one final document.
A property transfer form.
My home address was written at the top.
My blood went cold.
“This is what she was preparing.””
I picked it up.
At the bottom was a signature line.
Not my mother’s.
Not Daniel’s.
Mine.
Except I had never signed it.
Amy looked over my shoulder.
Her voice barely came out.
“Connor…”
I looked at the signature.
Because somehow, someone had copied my name.
May you like
And my mother had been preparing to transfer ownership of my house.
Without me knowing.
