Chapter 9: The Man Who Buried The Truth

I stared at Margaret.

I wanted to tell her she was wrong.

I wanted to laugh.

I wanted to say this was too impossible, too complicated, too cruel to be real.

But I couldn’t.

Because every impossible thing I had learned that day had eventually turned out to be true.

The bracelet.

Lucas.

The third baby.

The hidden hospital records.

My father’s secret investigation.

And now…

My father had a brother.

A brother nobody knew existed.

I looked at my mother.

“Did you know Dad had a brother?””

She shook her head slowly.

“No.””

Her voice sounded broken.

“Thomas never talked about having siblings.””

William’s expression was different.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

“You know something.””

Everyone turned toward him.

He looked uncomfortable.

“I know rumors.””

“What rumors?”” I asked.

William looked at the photograph Margaret had given us.

“Years ago, before I became your father’s attorney, I worked with his company.””

He paused.

“There were stories about the Hale family.””

“What kind of stories?””

“That Edward Hale had another son.””

My heart tightened.

“But everyone said my father was an only child.””

William nodded.

“That’s what the public believed.””

“Why?””

“Because Edward erased him.””

The room became silent.

Again.

Another person erased.

Another missing family member.

I looked at Margaret.

“Who was he?””

She answered quietly.

“Adrian Hale.””

The name felt strange.

A name I had never heard.

A name that should have been part of my childhood.

My family history.

My memories.

But it wasn’t.

“Why did Grandpa erase his own son?””

Margaret looked down.

“Because Adrian was obsessed with proving himself.””

William added:

“Edward built his entire life around reputation. The Hale name was everything.””

“And Adrian?””

“Adrian wanted control.””

I looked at the photograph.

The man standing beside my grandfather.

The man who had helped steal my brother’s life.

“He worked at the hospital?””

Margaret nodded.

“He became a medical administrator after leaving the family business.””

“Why?””

“Because it gave him access.””

“To records.””

“To people.””

“To families who trusted the system.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“So he created the adoption network.””

Margaret looked at William.

“Your father believed so.””

“Did he have proof?””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“Where?””

Margaret hesitated.

Then said:

“He hid it.””

I frowned.

“Where?””

She looked around the house.

“Somewhere Edward would never think to look.””

William immediately understood.

“The study.””

My heart jumped.

“My father’s drawer?””

“No.””

Margaret shook her head.

“Your father knew someone might search there.””

I thought about the locked drawer.

The bracelet.

The documents.

The letter.

“What did he hide?””

Margaret looked at me.

“The evidence that Adrian wasn’t just responsible for Lucas.””

A pause.

“He was responsible for the third baby.””

My chest tightened.

“Thomas.””

She nodded.

My father’s name.

The third child.

The one nobody had explained.

“Where is he?””

Margaret’s expression changed.

“I don’t know.””

Nobody moved.

“You don’t know?””

She shook her head.

“The night he was born, Adrian took him.””

My mother covered her mouth.

“No…”

Margaret looked at her.

“I’m sorry, Rebecca.””

My mother started crying.

“I thought I lost two children.””

The sentence broke something inside me.

Because she had.

Not physically.

But emotionally.

For fourteen years, she had lived believing her family was incomplete.

And somehow everyone around her let that happen.

I turned to William.

“We need to find my father’s evidence.””

He nodded.

“We do.””

But before anyone moved, my phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

I opened it.

*You finally met Margaret.*

My blood ran cold.

Lucas looked at me.

“Who is it?””

I showed them.

Another message appeared.

*She will tell you half the truth. She always does.*

Margaret stood suddenly.

Her face changed.

“No.””

“What?””

She looked at the phone.

“That number…”

“What?””

She whispered:

“That’s Adrian’s old number.””

The room went silent.

“But Adrian is alive?””

Margaret didn’t answer.

That was enough.

William immediately reached for his phone.

“I’m calling the police.””

Another message appeared.

*Ask Margaret what happened after she handed Thomas to me.*

I looked at Margaret.

The color disappeared from her face.

“You handed him?””

She stepped back.

“Lena…”

“You said Adrian took him.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was forced.””

The words hit hard.

“What does that mean?””

Margaret looked destroyed.

“After Lucas was removed, I tried to protect the third baby.””

“The baby named Thomas?””

She nodded.

“I hid him.””

“Where?””

“Inside the hospital.””

My heart pounded.

“For how long?””

“Three days.””

Nobody spoke.

Then she continued.

“I was trying to find someone I trusted.””

“Your father?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

Her face crumpled.

“Adrian found me first.””

The room became still.

“He threatened me.””

“With what?””

“With your mother.””

I looked at Rebecca.

Margaret whispered:

“He told me if I didn’t give him the baby, Rebecca and Lena would disappear too.””

My stomach turned.

“So you gave him Thomas.””

“I had no choice.””

Lucas stepped forward.

“But where did he take him?””

Margaret looked down.

“That’s the part I never understood.””

“What?””

“Adrian didn’t take Thomas away.””

She looked at me.

“He gave him to someone else.””

A terrible feeling entered my chest.

“Who?””

Margaret reached into her bag one more time.

She pulled out a small envelope.

“This is the last thing I kept.””

She handed it to me.

Inside was a birth record.

Not a copy.

The original.

The name at the top made my hands shake.

*Thomas Hale.*

But underneath was another name.

Guardian.

Not parent.

Not adoptive family.

Not hospital.

A single word.

*Father.*

I looked at Margaret.

“What is this?””

She whispered:

“Adrian didn’t steal your brother.””

The room went silent.

“He raised him.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Margaret looked at Lucas.

Then at me.

“Your missing brother grew up believing Adrian Hale was his father.””

I couldn’t breathe.

My father’s brother.

The man who destroyed our family.

Had raised one of us.

Lucas looked horrified.

“Wait.””

He pointed at the record.

“If Adrian raised him…”

Margaret nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then where is Thomas now?””

Nobody answered.

Then my phone rang.

Not a message.

A call.

Unknown number.

I stared at it.

My hand shook.

Lucas whispered:

“Answer it.””

I pressed the button.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, there was only breathing.

Then a man spoke.

A young man.

Calm.

Confused.

A voice I had never heard before.

But somehow…

It felt familiar.

“Is this Lena Hale?””

My heart stopped.

“Yes.””

A pause.

Then:

“My name is Thomas Hale.””

I couldn’t speak.

“I was told my entire life that my family abandoned me.””

My eyes filled with tears.

“Who told you that?””

Silence.

Then his answer came.

The answer that changed everything.

“My father.””

A pause.

“Adrian Hale.””

I looked at Margaret.

At Lucas.

At my mother.

And then Thomas said:

“But he died yesterday.””

The room froze.

“He left me one final message.””

My breathing stopped.

“What message?””

His voice shook.

“He said I needed to find my sister and my brother before the people who killed him found us.””

Nobody moved.

Then Thomas whispered:

“Because Adrian wasn’t the person who started this.””

A pause.

“He was trying to stop it.””

The call went silent for a moment.

Then one final sentence came through.

“The person who created the entire plan…”

May you like

My heart pounded.

“…is still alive.””
