Chapter 3: My Brother's Price

Veronica stood outside the shed for almost a full minute.

I could hear her heels shifting against the concrete.

"Manuel, don't make me call Derek.""

My father looked at me.

I shook my head.

Then I stepped toward the door.

"Who is it?""

There was silence.

Then Veronica answered.

"Alvin?""

I opened the door.

Her face changed instantly.

For half a second, she looked genuinely frightened.

Then she recovered.

"Well. This is unexpected.""

I stood in the doorway.

"Funny. I was thinking the same thing.""

She glanced over my shoulder and saw my mother sitting on the bed.

Then she looked at Dad.

"What is he doing here?""

I smiled without humor.

"Visiting my parents.""

"At this hour?""

"It's their home. I didn't realize visiting required an appointment.""

Veronica folded her arms.

"Alvin, this isn't a good time.""

"Then perhaps you should explain why my parents are sleeping in a shed.""

Her expression hardened.

"They prefer their privacy.""

I laughed.

"Two twin beds and a portable heater? That's your idea of privacy?""

"They have everything they need.""

I looked at the hallway behind her.

"Where's my brother?""

"Upstairs.""

"Wake him.""

She hesitated.

"There's no reason to involve Derek.""

"Wake him.""

For the first time, she seemed unsure how to respond.

Then she stepped backward.

"Fine. But don't start making accusations you can't support.""

I watched her walk toward the house.

Dad closed the shed door.

"Son, you shouldn't have done that.""

"Why?""

"Because she will tell Derek everything.""

"Good.""

Mom stood up.

"Alvin, you don't understand. Your brother has changed.""

I looked at her.

"How long has he been treating you this way?""

She didn't answer.

"Mom.""

Her eyes filled.

"Since he moved into the house.""

I waited.

She finally spoke.

"At first, he was kind. He brought groceries. He fixed a few things. Veronica even cooked dinner for us.""

"Then what happened?""

"One morning, she told me I shouldn't use the front entrance because guests might think I was staff.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

Mom nodded.

"She said I should use the kitchen entrance whenever people came over.""

Dad looked away.

"Then they took our bedroom.""

"Why?""

"Derek said the upstairs bedroom would be better for his back. Veronica wanted more closet space.""

My mother swallowed.

"After that, they started telling us which rooms we could use.""

I looked at the two beds.

"And you just accepted it?""

Dad's voice became sharp.

"What choice did we have?""

I opened my mouth.

Then closed it.

He continued.

"Your brother told us the house was no longer ours to manage. He said we had signed documents giving him control. When I objected, he threatened to put us in a nursing home.""

Mom wiped her cheeks.

"He said you wouldn't come. He said you had your own life.""

I looked at her.

"I would have come the same day.""

"I know.""

Her voice broke.

"But Derek kept telling us you didn't want to deal with us.""

That was the moment I understood the real cruelty.

They hadn't just taken money.

They had separated my parents from the one person who might have stopped them.

I heard footsteps coming down the back porch.

Derek appeared in the doorway wearing sweatpants and a black T-shirt.

He looked irritated.

Then he saw me.

"Alvin?""

"Hello, Derek.""

He glanced at Veronica.

"What the hell is going on?""

Veronica pointed at me.

"He came in here and started interrogating us.""

I stepped outside.

"Actually, I came to visit Mom and Dad.""

Derek rubbed his face.

"It's midnight.""

"Yes. Strange things happen when families stop communicating.""

He gave a short laugh.

"Don't start.""

I pointed toward the house.

"Why are our parents sleeping in a storage shed?""

Derek sighed.

"Here we go.""

"Answer the question.""

"They wanted the space.""

"Which space?""

"The shed.""

I stared at him.

"You're telling me they voluntarily gave you their bedroom, their kitchen, and their living room?""

Derek's expression changed.

"Look, you don't live here. You don't know what's been happening.""

"Then explain it.""

He stepped closer.

"Mom and Dad are getting older. They can't manage everything anymore. Veronica and I have been handling the bills, maintenance, appointments, all of it.""

"With my money?""

"Your money?""

"The four thousand dollars I send every month.""

Derek shrugged.

"That helps everyone.""

"It was for our parents.""

"And we're taking care of them.""

I pointed at the shed.

"Is that what you call taking care of them?""

He looked annoyed rather than ashamed.

"Alvin, you're making this dramatic. They have a place to sleep. They have food. Nobody is starving.""

I looked at Dad.

His eyes were fixed on the ground.

That told me everything.

"Where did the $310,000 go?"" I asked.

Derek froze.

Veronica's face went pale.

For the first time since I had arrived, neither of them had an immediate answer.

I stepped closer.

"Don't pretend you don't know what I'm talking about.""

Derek glanced at Veronica.

Then he laughed.

"That's private financial information.""

"Not if you obtained it using our parents' property.""

His jaw tightened.

"You talked to a lawyer?""

I said nothing.

He shook his head.

"Of course you did. You always think money gives you the right to control everything.""

I almost laughed.

The irony was extraordinary.

I had been sending money to support our parents, while he had apparently been using their home as collateral.

"Where's the loan money, Derek?""

He looked toward the house.

"That's none of your business.""

"Then why is it connected to Mom and Dad's house?""

Veronica stepped forward.

"Alvin, you need to leave.""

I turned toward her.

"Actually, I think you need to start packing.""

She laughed.

"Excuse me?""

"You heard me.""

Derek raised his voice.

"You can't throw us out.""

"I didn't say I was throwing you out tonight. I said you should prepare.""

He pointed at me.

"This is my parents' house, too.""

Dad finally spoke.

"No, Derek.""

My brother turned.

"What?""

Dad stood beside Mom.

"This is the house your mother and I built. You were raised here. That doesn't make it yours.""

Derek stared at him.

For a moment, I saw something ugly in his expression.

Then he said, "You signed the papers.""

Mom flinched.

Derek continued.

"You signed everything. You can't suddenly pretend you didn't understand.""

Dad shook his head.

"We thought we were signing medical authorization forms.""

Veronica let out an exaggerated sigh.

"Oh, please. You both knew what you were signing.""

Mom looked directly at her.

"You told me it was for emergencies.""

"And it was.""

"Then why did you take our bedroom?""

Veronica opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Derek grabbed her arm.

"Enough. We're going inside.""

He turned toward me.

"Stay out of our business.""

I took a step forward.

"Then stop making my parents' lives your business.""

He shook his head and disappeared into the house.

Veronica followed, but before closing the door, she looked directly at me.

"You have no idea what you're interfering with.""

The door slammed.

I stood in the yard, listening to the silence.

Dad touched my shoulder.

"Come inside, son.""

We returned to the shed.

Inez called a few minutes later.

I put her on speaker.

"Alvin, I've spoken with the bank's legal department. The account you identified has been restricted pending a fraud review. I've also requested an emergency review of the disputed authorization.""

"Good.""

"But there's a problem.""

"What now?""

"The bank received a document yesterday requesting an additional advance against the property.""

Dad went completely still.

"How much?""

Inez paused.

"Another $180,000.""

Mom covered her mouth.

"Who requested it?""

"The application was submitted under your parents' names. Derek is listed as the authorized representative.""

I looked toward the house.

"Has it been approved?""

"Not yet. That's why we need to act quickly.""

Inez continued.

"Alvin, I also found a reference in the original loan file to a private property agreement signed decades ago. It isn't attached to the current deed, but the lender has a copy of a document mentioning an additional restriction.""

Dad suddenly stood.

"Did you say private property agreement?""

"Yes, Manuel. Do you know what that is?""

He looked at the rusted key on the table.

His face had gone pale.

"I think I do.""

Inez asked him to explain.

Dad shook his head.

"Not over the phone.""

I picked up the key.

"Dad, we need to open that room.""

He looked at Mom.

She nodded slowly.

Then Dad walked to the small storage cabinet in the corner and removed an old wooden box.

Inside were photographs, a few yellowed letters, and a small notebook with my grandfather's handwriting on the cover.

He opened it carefully.

The first page contained a date from thirty-nine years earlier.

Beneath it, my grandfather had written:

If anyone ever tries to take this house from Manuel and Celia, the original deed, the family trust documents, and the proof of ownership will remain where no dishonest person can reach them.

My father ran his thumb over the handwriting.

Then he turned the page.

There was a rough drawing of the original basement.

A small square had been marked beneath the eastern wall.

Beside it were three words.

*The room beneath everything.*

I looked at Dad.

"Is that where the key goes?""

He nodded.

"Yes.""

"Then let's go.""

He hesitated.

"Your brother knows about the room.""

I stared at him.

"How?""

Dad looked toward the main house.

"Because three nights ago, Derek came into this shed while your mother was sleeping.""

My stomach tightened.

"What did he do?""

"He searched my belongings. He turned the beds over, emptied the drawers, and even cut open an old suitcase.""

"For the key?""

Dad nodded.

"When he couldn't find it, he grabbed me by the shirt and demanded to know where your grandfather's papers were.""

I felt my blood turn cold.

"And what did you tell him?""

Dad looked down at the key.

"I told him I had burned them.""

I waited.

Then he whispered:

"But he didn't believe me.""

My phone vibrated.

A message from Inez appeared.

*Alvin, do not let anyone access that property document until I arrive. I found something in the county archive that changes the entire situation. Call me immediately.*

I looked up.

Before I could respond, Dad took the rusted key from my hand.

He stared at it for a long moment.

Then he said something I hadn't expected.

"Son, there's something you need to know about your grandfather's trust.""

"What?""

Dad looked toward the house where Derek and Veronica were sleeping.

"The house was never supposed to belong to either of us outright.""

He paused.

"Your grandfather left it to someone else.""

"Who?""

My father looked at me.

May you like

And then he said my name.

"Alvin.""
